UK Top 40, w/e 15th January 1977

So, in last week's poll Smokie & Roy Chubby Brown's version of "Living Next Door To Alice" polled exactly zero votes, obviously indicating a massive public demand for discussing Smokie's original. Failing that, we're not exactly going to get many better reasons to poll a year from the 70s, so away we go. This is the week after it peaked at number 5, cos for some reason ChartStats only goes up to #30 that week.

Anyway - 1977. The year punk happened in the UK. But not in January, by the looks of things. Vote for the one you love best from this lot:

Jeez, Steely Dan in the Top 30.

Not an easy choice, but I went for the Mike Oldfield. Very tuneful.

23. Boney M - Daddy Cool

^^in the pub before fwd on sunday, there were some old people properly raving to this. busting actual moves and everything. they looked like they were having a ball. it was amazing and v heartening.

have only heard about 3 of these songs, voted rose royce.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 08:54 (fifteen years ago)

livin' thing all the way

nonightsweats, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 09:32 (fifteen years ago)

Nearly went Stevie, went RoseRoyce because I bought it then.

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 09:57 (fifteen years ago)

I have really strong memories of Julie Covington (I was 5), so that.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

I love a whole lot of these, but in a "happy memories of childhood" way rather than actually actively wanting to hear any of them at the moment. I think my favourites, not for any particular reason, might be ELO and The Kursaal Flyers and Queen.

I didn't know the Kersal Massive had been going for so long.

I have a terrible soft spot for Livin' Thing.

Billy Ocean - Stop Me

wish this was the original of The Smiths song

unban dictionary (blueski), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 11:03 (fifteen years ago)

This chart is so bad I am actually voting for Queen.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

tempted to vote for 'Bionic Santa' without having heard it

unban dictionary (blueski), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 11:10 (fifteen years ago)

This chart is so bad I am actually voting for Queen.

The one with Smokie's actual biggest hit is worse.

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 11:13 (fifteen years ago)

Stevie without a second thought.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

This is pretty dire actually - I guess there's an unhappy mix of Christmas 'hits' on their way down, the usual novelty fodder and some below par efforts from some big guns. I voted for Kursaal Flyers, although I kind of like Julie Cov, Rose Royce and (god help me) Liverpool Express!

Dr.C, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

"Somebody To Love" is probably my favorite song here, but "Haitian Divorce" is awesome and I always forget it was actually a single in the UK so it was a pleasant surprise to see it here.

some dude, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

Kursaal Flyers: is this the I-know-that-she-knows-that-I-know-that-fuck-knows one?

Joerg Hi Dere (NickB), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

Voted ELO, anyone that didn't is crazy like a fool.

Joerg Hi Dere (NickB), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

xpost yes, it was.

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

Shit I didn't see ELO!

Anyway Kursaals would've still had my vote.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

Voted the Dan, but almost went for KC, "Keep It Common-Law."

Joseph McCombs, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

Rose Royce, some way ahead of ABBA and Queen, some way ahead of a load of stuff I haven't heard, some way ahead of the Dan

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

Ooh, Donna Summer's "Winter Melody" is beautiful - I'll take that please. Tina Charles' "Dr. Love" is nice, but First Choice had an unrelated 1977 disco hit called "Doctor Love" that was a classic.

Josefa, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

...and Kiss did "Calling Dr. Love" that same year

Stop wishing death on people just for the cool thread titles (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

Possibles: 10cc, Julie Covington, The Drifters, ELO, ver Dan, Thin Lizzy, Stylistics, Elton John. I think I shd probably vote 10cc for the verses, but I have powerful love for all of those.

Calamari Merkin (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

THIN LIZZY

"Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word". A great song from a not so great album.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 3 August 2009 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

And, I mean, I love 10cc and ELO, but these two aren't really their best moments.
