Ian Hunter: Still got it at 70

Cannot believe there is no thread dedicated to his recent music. He turned 70 last month and is on a hot streak, to put it mildly. Shrunken Heads and now Man Overboard. Plus Mott is playing a reunion show in London later this year.

Anybody else hear the new records? So good.

two years pass...

Still got it at 72! Saw him in Boston last night, looked and sounded great. Hadn't paid much attention to his recent stuff, but the newish ballads fit in well with the Mott/early solo hits in the set.

ALSO: I never realized that John Cougar Mellencamp's "Small Town" is basically a rewrite of "When the Daylight Comes" until last night, wen Ian slyly slipped in the new verse "I was born in a small town, learned how to rip-off in a small town". First time I saw Ian was in '79, opening for the Kinks. Third on the bill that night was a brash upstart named Johnny Cougar. Now it all makes sense!

I went to see a show on that tour a the Nassau Coliseum, seventh row, lost my hearing for a few days, wanted more Something Else Kinks and less arena rock Kinks, and there was no Ian Hunter! Glad I finally got to see him at one of those free summer shows of NYC 2009

I was in the fifth row for that Kinks show, at Cobo Arena in Detroit. My ears rang for days afterward! I remember everybody making a big deal about Mick Ronson playing with Hunter, I had no idea who that was at the time. Yeah, it was the Kinks doing mostly their Arista stuff, but I have to say I have a real soft spot for that phase of their career.
