gareth, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got the odd album and twelve inch. The other day I was playing bits of an album called 'Invitation' (1979) intending to sell it, then I thought no maybe I'll keep this. I'll probably sell it later.

"You Are My Starship" = classic Michael Henderson vocal ballad

I have several Norman Connors records. I already told you that.

Are you collecting artists whose first names are Norman?

I don't know a lot about him except he started as a jazz drummer before moving into funk/disco. Like Roy Ayers he's always been a name to drop in certain circles - the jazz credentials kind of help validate the jazz-funk music in some people's eyes. I'd say most of what he did between about 1975 and 82 would be worth listening to if you like that type of music.

The 1980 Aquarian Dream album, produced by Norman Connors , with Sylvia Striplin as one of the featured vocalists, Phoenix is the track at the basis of Studio 45's "Freak It" which came out in 1998 on the Azuli label. This Azuli track also features the sweet vocals of Bernard Fowler, one of my all-time favourite vocalists.

I favor his late '70s/early '80s albums -- I think Mr. C is particularly underrated (mainly for the first side). Each album has its moments.

Just picked up Invitation. Excellent stuff.

Apparently he's playing the downtown Anchorage Marriott on 10/29. http://events.adn.com/anchorage-ak/events/show/203784646-bpwnttf-harvest-ball-fundraiser-featuring-norman-connors-cheryl-pepsii-riley

Always fascinating to see where googling these 70s/80s jazz-funk guys will take you.
