POLLco albums poll (Poco, that is)

i'm not 100% familiar with this group, since i only own 'a good feelin' to know' and am pretty familiar with 'crazy eyes' and 'cantamos'.

this is basically an excuse to talk about poco, who seem like a genuinely great band who are unfairly ignored, forgotten, or even maligned. i avoided the latter-day live albums.

i just saw this poll! man, this is tough. i made someone buy the s/t today at the store. that album is so great. the first side has some of their best songs and the second side has one of the greatest loveliest 18 minute jams in all of rock. pickin' up the pieces is so great too. their most byrds/springfield album and up there with the best of west coast rock records. a good feelin' to know was the album that hooked me though. the album that made me realize that poco were not relics or shaggy also-rans. it's a powerful album.

i've been digging rose of cimmaron lately. and head over hills is a good later album too. it has the steely dan song "dallas" on it.

i could pick any one of those first four. when richie furay left after crazy eyes it just wasn't the same band though. even though i like some of the later stuff.

if you want to convert someone to poco play that jam on the second side of the s/t album. if that doesn't get them, you don't want to know them.

I thought this was gonna be about Paco but now youtube has schooled me and maybe it's Taco? I am confused. What happened?

that first album should really be appreciated by more people. by people, you know, under the age of 40. if you like the byrds and the first moby grape album and buffalo springfield then you really need it.

gonna buy like 6 of their records this weekend i think.

omar little, Friday, 31 July 2009 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

best part about these guys is the ability to buy the best of their discography for under $10 total

come on people!

I'm voting Crazy Eyes. The one Poco song that I find myself humming most often is their version of JJ Cale's "Magnolia," and it's on that album.

I interviewed Richie Furay a couple years back. Super nice dude -- and cool, too:

LOL successful poll. God knows how "From the Inside" ended up with two votes, that album is so dull I'm convinced it killed their career stone dead.

A friend of mine gave me a few records, one of them was legend. Some real lush yacht rock on there. It seems like maybe this was their last gasp as far as being commercially relevant? It's definitely one of those albums that if it was released by an unknown group, and dug up from total obscurity for a reissue, it would get some crazy props.

Probably the worst thing about this band is the fact that they're named "poco"

omar little, Saturday, 20 May 2023 20:23 (two years ago)

Originally, the new group was named "Pogo", after the Pogo comic strip character, but was changed when its creator, Walt Kelly, objected and threatened to sue.

Wow okay well I guess it could have been much worse xp

omar little, Saturday, 20 May 2023 20:47 (two years ago)

The only song that came to mind when I opened this thread was "Crazy Love," which is, of course, one for the ages.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 20 May 2023 21:05 (two years ago)

I did not know this until today: the cover art for Legend was by . . . Phil Hartman.

okay i love this band— partly due to some more recent posting in another thread? which i can’t remember right now.

The Buffalo Springfield Alumnae Hierarchy Protocol indicates that listening to the following is a prerequisite before listening to a single Poco album:

- all three Springfield albums (the debut in MONO ONLY)
- Crosby Stills and Nash and Deja Vu OR two albums by Steven Stills/Manassas
- a minimum of three Neil Young solo albums (1968 to 1979; Journey Through the Past LP OR movie counts as one album only, Decade as two)

Note that the Bruce Palmer solo record CANNOT substitute for any of the above! Listening to Souther Hillman Furay before Poco is immediate disqualification.

Stephen Stills, my God! Who am I to make the rules?!?
