Fiddle reels, tin whistles, Riverdance rhythmic gestures...if you listen to any CCM, it's everywhere. What is up with that.

Catholic heritage?
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 August 2009 05:28 (seventeen years ago)
yeah maybe Johnny F. but I don't know - Irish Catholicism is its own thing, CCM isn't really very Catholic generally & evangelicals have a pretty tangled attitude toward Rome - Rich Mullins was said to be on the verge of converting when he died, and he was for sure one of the guys biggest on introducing Irish tropes into the form though, so you might be onto something

Heritage! Scots-Irish mid-Appalachian kitsch leaking out. When the Stars and Bars are a symbol of heritage-not-hate, it's just one step back too thee ol' sod. The Chieftains are the missing link between CCM and Mick with the Mars bar.

What I wanna know is why every random Irish 'country' (ceol tíre!) singer from the wilds of Longford/Mayo/etc sings in a big over the top Kenny Rogers accent.

Yes, seems that Ireland and Britain get misty-eyed and kitschy about Appalachian music. My friend's dirtbag punk-bluegrass outfit got flown over by a museum in Dublin to play their authentic American music.
