Although Riley stepped back from music for a time in the 1970s, working in home decorating

ha! did not know that.

"I see this room in red hot".

Started a lot of mix tapes with Mr. Riley. Here's someone you've never heard of who you will never forget.

RIP. He was a great one. Someone had forwarded me an e-mail a few weeks ago that was asking for money to help pay his medical bills.

A cover of "Red Hot" (by Sam the Sham?) on a 45 from my mother's childhood was one of the first rock records I loved. The lyric "she ain't got no money, but man she's got a lot" is fabulous. A lot of what? A few years later I got it. RIP.

^^^

One of my first-ever record purchases was a sealed bag of 5 cutout 45s, and one of 'em was that Sam The Sham 45. (This would have been 1966 0r 67; the record hadn't been off the charts all that long. Only charted in the lower rungs of the Hot 100, iirc.) Then I left it on the easy chair and my little brother sat on it and broke it. I went back to the store and sifted through hundreds of bags to find a replacement.

My band covers both "Red Hot" and "Flying Saucers."
