Finally! Can't wait. Ha, how many "garage" records I've cycled through in the past few years looking for that sweet spot Cartwright hits so consistently

So this "Live At Goner Records" CD at my radio station is some promo-only thing? "cause it's new as well. Should I rip it for Leonardo?
― sleeve, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)
Goner is selling it at their store, it's probably available commercially. I got a copy from them when I was last in Memphis and dropped a hundo on new shit. Mentioned that I did a show at a community radio station and they gave me Cococoma, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, and the live @ goner cd's for my station. It was awesome!
― Trip Maker, Monday, 3 August 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)
is the CD is a reissue of the vinyl that came out back in like '06?
― ^prizes the praise of the media, and the Europeans (will), Monday, 3 August 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

― Jouster, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:56 (sixteen years ago)
oh yeah not the album cover btw. that's from a Break Up, Break Down single, iirc

I had never heard these guys before, but this is astoundingly good. Holy mackerel. I am so down with this record. Man oh man.

probably my favorite album of the year. just incredible.
― a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago)
If there's a better song this year than Stick Up For Me, I'd love to hear it. One of the great "screw the Man" songs.
― kornrulez6969, Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:45 (fifteen years ago)
love love love these guys... the one time i saw 'em, at SXSWa bunch of years ago, they closed with an *amazing cover of 'suspicious minds' - anyone know if they ever committed it to wax (or, even better, mp3)?

TBHS is indeed a great starting place. But don't sleep on Break Up Break Down. very much in the vein of "Two Thieves" from Compulsive Gambler days and features a heartwrenching (& slightly menacing!) cover of the Everly's "So Sad." Goner recently put out a remastered version of it on vinyl (apparently the original release played at the wrong speed)

Yeah, Break Up Break Down & Home For Orphans are both great for the more country/folk/bummer-rock Gene Clarky side of the Reigning Sound.
― Brio, Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:18 (fifteen years ago)
"Broken Things" is such a brilliant pop song.
Man...I still remember seeing the Oblivions in the 7th St Entry on their tour for "Popular Favorites"...they did "Bad Man" and I swear it was like they were levitating a foot off the stage.

There's a Greg Cartwright-hosted radio show you can find as zips with a little digging - over 2 hours of music, he plays about 50 tracks from his 45's collection. Soul and old rockabilly, 60's garage, as you might expect. Pretty awesome.
― Brio, Saturday, 16 January 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)
"greg cartwright radio show" on google will bring it up
They are playing Sat afternoon in Hoboken at Maxwells as a WFMU benefit, also an opportunity to drink early.

wish they'd commit their cover of 'suspicious minds' to vinyl one of these days. really loved his album with the parting gifts from late last year, too.

damn, need to see these guys again, so good live as well as on record. That "Stick Up For Me" tune is truly great. Original, apparently, here, by the Glass Sun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3wbcZ3zf2g. Sounding very early Bob Seger-ish (like "2+2=?"), and sure enough they seem to have been from Ypsilanti, MI.
