While I love AMT, I don't really think is close at all.

He was only 21 years old when he 16 (Alex in SF), Monday, 3 August 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

I love Acid Mothers but there's no way this is even a contest. I threw AMT a vote based on the fact I've played them more often in the past year or so. That's the only justification I have... Boredoms are simply too good.

big discog full of garbage v. moderately sized discog with some garbage

C'mon. Not a fair fight.

Nate Carson, Monday, 3 August 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

I've seen both live – Boredoms twice with the three drum kits and the crazy hand lights, and AMT in their Cosmic Inferno guise - and they're the most enjoyable gigs I can remember from the last few years.

Actually, the best was the Japanese New Music Festival with AMT's Kawabata and Tatsuya Yohsida from Ruins; I didn't know what to expect from it at all, but it was easily the most fun and least pretentious gig I've been to.

Boredoms because they don't charge $18 for a CDR

i have to say i think AMT are a severely overrated pile of shit only old hippies must like. "oh those inscrutable japanese" they fawn. fuckin listenb to hawkwind's space ritual - that's probably the best of this AWFUL sort of music.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:22 (sixteen years ago)

can we maybe use this thread to talk about AMT's recent output? does anybody but me listen to stuff like "magical power from mars" (which is astounding btw), "recurring dream & apocalypse of darkness", "lord of the underground: vishnu and the magical elixir", "IAO chant from the cosmic inferno", "just another band from the cosmic inferno", "crystal rainbow pyramid", "glorify astrological martyrdom", "dark side of the black moon", "interstellar guru and zero", "journey into the cosmic inferno", etc etc

is it just me or does it seem like people stopped listening after "electric heavyland"?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:27 (sixteen years ago)

I've listened to as much of that stuff as I can and there's a hell of a lot of goodness there -- mind you, live the band tends to still rely on "Pink Lady Lemonade" and/or "La Novia" a lot.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:29 (sixteen years ago)

last time i saw you IRL was at an AMT show, you know that?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:30 (sixteen years ago)

Hahah, that's right!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:31 (sixteen years ago)

really enjoying "just another band from the cosmic inferno" and "magical power from mars"

not so sure about the new stoner metal / black metal influenced stuff

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:32 (sixteen years ago)

and as far as boredoms go i'm going to get all challops-y here and opine that super roots 7, 8, 9 and 10 have pretty much sucked, rebore vol 0 should have been called RESNORE, and seadrum / house of sun was 75% wack

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:35 (sixteen years ago)

and i don't get the OOIOO love at all

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 04:35 (sixteen years ago)

Now all the noise people will find you.

Sadly I think I own every single one of these releases. All good to excellent albums, to varying degrees. My favorites are probably IAO Chant and Recurring Dream, from that list.

It was around Magical Power from Mars that I kind of fell off the AMT wagon.
I like it, but was annoyed that they released three seperate eps and then compiled them all on one cd a year or so after the three different eps came out. I like Mainliner more than AMT. Oh, I think the last AMT album I bought was St Captain Freakout and the Magic Bamboo Request, which had one or two cool mellow jams on it, but was mostly boring rehash. I like LIVE IN JAPAN a lot, that was the last AMT thing that really blew me away. I'll have to check out the ones that you guys are citing here.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

AMT are cool, if wildly inconsistent, but there's really no contest. Super Roots 10 sucks? What about the AMAZING Lindstrom remix? Sea Drum is lovely. Second drone track less so, but first tune is great. And they're an incredible live band. AMT do rock live, but having seen them twice I'm not sure I need to see them again, unless it's in a different formation.

Stew, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

I want to vote AMT because Kawabata when I saw him all by his lonesome at Terrastock>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>all of the Boredoms when I saw them at 1st Ave a while back (and they were awesome!), but I don't know if that wouldn't be all too fair (plus, Eye was injured, I believe??).

Abstaining for the time being.

producto do Brazil (╓abies), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

Kawabata when I saw him all by his lonesome at Terrastock

A set memorably described by Elvis Telecom as one that 'separated the living from the dead.'

This was indeed great. Playful vibe, awesome playing, vegetable rituals, and the message 'Welcome to Japanese New Music Festival!' before every song.

rutgen cyb0rger (gnarly sceptre), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

After some years of deliberation, I've concluded that Yamantaka Eye is the Matthew Barney of noise music.

Reassuring Drops, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

This being both a good and bad thing...

Reassuring Drops, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

pls explain

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

It makes sense cuz Kawabata Makoto is probably the Barney the Purple Dinosaur of noise music.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

who is barney rubble?

ian, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:34 (sixteen years ago)

Mike Patton

Reassuring Drops, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

Mike Patton is more like the Barney Fife of noise music.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

zing...

Reassuring Drops, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

please to restrict discussion to AMT vs boredoms

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:58 (sixteen years ago)

Magical Power from Mars is the last AMT thing I bought (after buying the first EP from the series, hmmph.) Just too much stuff. As vaguely affiliated side projects go, I like Floating Flower more than OOIOO definitely.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

Since 2001 AMT has consistently turned out decent cosmic psych records at the rate of 3-4 albums a year, with some filler but an otherwise relatively strong output given the volume of music.

In the same timeframe, Boredoms have produced far less music (hard to say whether the music is better or worse than AMT- there's substantial stylistic differences), but they do have the killer Boadrum performances under their belt.

For me, at this point the spectacle of a Boredoms performance is far more enticing than the content- I never listen to them at home, but I'd pay good money to see them live.

I listen to AMT at home all the time, but I'd probably pay less to see them live.

Reassuring Drops, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

the last album by amt i heard was in 2008 and i liked it a bunch:

new acid mothers temple album is friggin' heavy!

have no idea how many have come since then though.

it was definitely the "heaviest" amt album i have heard. and i've heard about ten. i sold all my CDs on ebay though. and i traded the one from last year in to the record store.

scott seward, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

i have ALWAYS liked the idea of amt more than the reality of the music. love the album covers, love the titles, love the idea of a japanese guitar freakout hippie cult in the 21st century. but i just never listened to the CDs that much. go figure. and i listen to psychedelic rock ALL the time.

i've seen AMT 4 times in the last 5 years and loved them every time, but i just don't really listen to their recorded stuff. i accumulate it and then let it sit. as a live experience i think they're great, but as a band they're not anywhere near the boredoms.
