dude made a lot of albums. i was listening to Immunity today from 1981. i was digging it. i'm gonna look around for his other stuff that i haven't heard. and i've never heard his band Quantum Jump either. (gonna check Youtube for that stuff.)

he used to date stevie nicks. he produced, like, a zillion albums. he did the music for the movie Better Off Dead!

he also put out two albums in the 80's as Thinkman.

I like his stuff with Nicks actually: "Rooms on Fire" is one of her best (and goofiest) singles. And I actually listen to that Rush album he produced, Roll the Bones.

the immunity album sorta has an electronic david sylvian feel about it. i really need to dig deeper into it.

i heard quantum jump's 'Barracuda' a while back on bumrocks (what tipped me off to hine in the first place). song blew me away. kinda spaced out jazziness

k, listening to immunity, and it's closer to early peter gabriel, berlin period bowie, and some of the weirder robert wyatt. so great.

jaxon, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 03:06 (sixteen years ago)

i'll definitely look for the quantum jump stuff now. that is right up my beardo alley.

I've been really into Lone Ranger since hearing it on BIS. I seem to recall hearing an edit of it lately but can't remember where and I feel like it might have not been too good?

How weird, I was thinking about creating a Rupert Hine thread a few days ago ! Immunity is such a fantastic album. The Set Up video is also very cool :

Don't like his production job on Kevin Ayers' Confessions of Dr Dream. Too cold and clinical; lacks warmth; little sense of empathy with the Ayers ethos.

i recently picked up a hine produced album by Saga. i'm not really feeling it yet. some nice instrumental moments, but the vocals and songs kinda aren't my thing.

I dig his work with Howard Jones and The Fixx and Rush, but I had no idea he had a solo career!

Yeah, confessions of Dr. Dream is the first non-great Ayers album...

There are 3 x Thinkman albums, "The Formula" (on Island), "Life Is A Full-time Occupation" (Ariola Germany) and "Hard Hat Zone" (Ariola Germany) - all quite good, but his A&M albums are the best ones to try.

Does anyone else remember "Snakes don't dance fast" ?

Mark G, Friday, 4 December 2009 10:48 (fifteen years ago)

I've got Mixing, which I think is sort of a remixed greatest hits. Not crazy about the Lone Ranger track here, but Barracuda and Blue Mountain are really nice. Have they been sampled somewhere? They sound strangely familiar, anyway, but then they also kind of remind me of Zero 7 in a creepy way.

i am absolutely in love with The Wildest Wish To Fly. unfortunately i got like the US pressing of it or something and it has 2 tracks from Immunity (which I already have). it's so great though. it's a tropical new wave album. very similar to Robert Palmer's "Pride" which I've also been totally feeling lately. a lot less dark than Immunity.

been getting into him recently. some amazing tunes - this one gives me genuine goosebumps, sort of a paradox how apocalyptic predictions endure 30 years on.

Really feeling the Hine Sound today (HoJo, Fixx, Hine solo, Private Dancer). How can dynamic compression be evil when clean electric guitars sound this delicious with shit-tons of it applied to them?
