I'm about two seconds away from clicking the Buy button on Amazon....
Great tracklistng and their BIS mix was a lot of fun

P.S. I looked for a relevant thread but couldn't find one... but if there is one, mod pls delete

FWIW, it's also available on eMusic (in case you're a subscriber).

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 4 August 2009 19:51 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks, but never tried eMusic. do they have wav files? i was looking at the wav fiels over at JunoDownload too, but for the price, it was actually cheaper at Amazon - $13.99 for the CD instead of the $22something for the wav files at Juno

i actually just wound up buying it at Amazon.

Moot question now, but I think eMusic has MP3 files, not wavs.

Anyway, is it good? The disc is on my eMusic Saved-for-Later list.

It's great. And fwiw, there are actually two different versions -- the "1Hour Promo Mix" has mostly different songs (by Dusty Springfield, Joe Bataan, Richard T Bear, Bionic Boogie, etc), all segued into each other. Though there is some overlap -- "It's Alright" by Gino Soccio, for instance. (I can print the song listing for that one, if nobody can find it anywhere else.)

Yep, Karen Young -- same Karen Young who did "Hot Shot," only a few years later. (I never knew "Detour" was that obscure, fwiw. 12-inch used to be fairly common in dollar bins.)

And just sayin, that promo you linked to has the tracklist of the actual CD, not the promo I have.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Here's the promo mix track list:

Dusty Springfield - Baby Blue (Horse Meat Disco edit)
Eddie Drennon - Disco Jam
Johnny Harris - Odyssey Pt 2
Kenny Bee - Dance All Night
Joe Bataan - Rap-O-Clap-O
K.I.D. - Hupendi Muziki Mangu
Richard T Bear - Sunshine Hotel
Gino Soccio - It's Alright
Robin Beck - Sweet Talk
The Supremes - High Energy
Bionic Boogie - Dance Little Dreamer

xhuxk, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Kind of confused here- is the promo mix different from the mix disc of the 2xCD? From what I've seen, digital outlets are only carrying the unmixed disc.

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I didn't even know there was a double CD. I've got a single disc, with the songlist that just sayin' linked to above, and a separate single promo disc, with the songlist I just transcribed. If they're available together (which they might be), that's news to me.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link

The version on eMusic has most or all of the tracks on the disc Just Sayin' linked to above, but in a different order. I assume it's the same disc, but it's all a bit confusing now.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 5 August 2009 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Too bad "Sweet Talk" didn't make the official release. As far as I know, the original version has appeared only on that (presumably OOP) unmixed Joe Claussell BBE comp (CD-wise).

"woah man, flügelhorn" (haitch), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 23:30 (fifteen years ago) link

The eMusic version is "unmixed." Sorry to ask a very stupid question, but what's the difference between "mixed" and "unmixed" in this context? Is it, for instance, that the songs overlap and are spliced together in the "mixed" version (making one long, continuous track)?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 7 August 2009 01:58 (fifteen years ago) link

It's split up into tracks, but yeah, the first disc is one long continuous DJ mix while the second disc is all the tracks unedited, presented in full on their own.

it's a pretty good mix, not a big deal for me like a new idjut boys mix or anything but passable. i'm not sure what all the hype is about really. i guess the parties must be really really good? or they're just buds with the guys at strut?

r u talking about nightdubbin'? cause the vinyl and online versions of that are GREAT but they don't come with the idjut boys mix- it's hard to justify buying it again (or, yknow, buying a cd at all) but i want to hear that mix!

saw them some months ago, and urgh, i couldn't have been more disappointed. i expected some obscure disco with a couple of classics thrown in but what i got was a barrage of obvious tracks like "is it all over my face" and "funkytown."

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:50 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i saw them play a set like that before, awful. but their parties are meant to be amazing, like most of these guys they're usually better at their own regular night.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:52 (fourteen years ago) link

sure enough, the dancefloor was cleared in no time and at the end of the set, there's only 2 spectators left in the club.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:53 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost: if that's the case then i guess they tend to underestimate the crowd in big clubs.

I saw them at Corsica Studios and they were fantastic, not like that description at all.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:54 (fourteen years ago) link

It depends who's DJing for them. Jim and James play more disco anthems, while Severino plays tougher and housey. Fwiw I think Severino's the best DJ in London.

Jack BS, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:59 (fourteen years ago) link

lol i never mind hearing 'funkytown' and 'is it all over my face'

saying that these guys haven't ever blown me away like the batb dudes, damon and ben bloodbath on a good night, the dj history lot, mancuso at the loft, nadia ksabia and rory phillips and everyone else putting their own spin on things

i think one of the problems with the HMD lot is that they don't really have real strong vibe or personality... they seem to borrow the best bits of everyone else.

Crackle Box, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

now... consistantly best party in london, that'd be more interesting

yes, it's jim and james that played in my country.

depends. in my case, hearing that two after a bunch of similarly classic tracks only made me number (is that a word?).

Did anyone buy the CD version of HMD III? I can't find the download code (for the unmixed tracks) anywhere in the packaging.

Yes, I bought the CD and used the download code. As I recall (don't have the CD to hand), there was a separate slip, same paper size as the booklet.

Yep, slip tucked in w/ the booklet - haven't used my code yet. Was planning to this weekend but you can have it if you're desperate.

They were indeed. It was played to death in gay clubs during 1984-85, and I’d become heartily sick of it, but HMD breathed new life into it, and I play it out myself.

map, my weekly gig is in a small town in northern England where people mostly dance to what they know, and I'm enough of a whore to oblige them. That said, I do slip some lesser known tracks into the first hour of my set, when people are happy to listen to them. Tracks that have gone down well early-doors include Hiroshi Fukumura "Hunt Up Wind", Alphonse Mouzon "I'm Glad That You're Here", Mary Clark "Take Me I'm Yours", Scherrie Payne "I'm Not In Love", Chicago "Street Player", Carrie Lucas "Dance With You", Deodato "Night Cruiser", Toney Lee "Reach Up", Otis Clay "The Only Way Is Up", the Reflex remix of "Got To Give It Up", L.T.D. "Back In Love Again", Boiling Point "Let's Get Funktified", Jean Carn "Was That All It Was" and "If You Wanna Go Back", Phyllis Hyman "You Know How To Love Me", Arthur Adams "You Got The Floor", Paulhino Da Costa "Deja Vu", Cameo "It's Serious", Ashford & Simpson "Found A Cure" and "It Seems To Hang On", Fat Larry's Band "Act Like You Know", Melba Moore "You Stepped Into My Life", Donald Byrd "Thank You For Funking Up My Life", Thelma Houston "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning", Samuel Jonathan Johnson "You" (Joey Negro remix) and "Sweet Love", T-Connection "Saturday Night", Chaka Khan "Fate", Locksmith "Far Beyond", MFSB "Sexy", Patrice Rushen "Number One", Wilton Felder/Bobby Womack "Inherit The Wind", Tracey Weber "Sure Shot", Jazzy Dee "Get On Up", Magic Disco Machine "Scratchin", Tony Rallo & The Midnite Band "Holdin' On", Timeless Legend "I Was Born To Love You", Brothers "Are You Ready For This", Marilyn Scott "God Only Knows", Mike T "Do It Anyway You Wanna", Cissy Houston "Think It Over", Pockets "Come Go With Me", New York Port Authority "I Got It", Light Of The World "Time (Remix)", Level 42 "Starchild", Rahni Harris & FLO "Six Million Steps", Azymuth "Jazz Carnival", Maze "Back In Stride". The original 1986 version of The Source/Candi Staton "You Got The Love" also very much does the business and brings the dancing.

I made myself a playlist of those tracks mike t - bloody marvellous.

I have a thing that I reckon might just be me but I've just listened to that Tracey Weber track and well: does anyone hear that vocal as slightly off-key, flat or off-pitch? It's something I notice more in late 70s/early 80s disco than anywhere else, but I can't tell if it's just my ears.
