"Point of No Return" although I prefer the version on the album above. The single is too soulful which is useless in this context.

Great power trio indeed.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

I had trouble remembering how the later hits (e.g. "Tell Me Why") went.

Anatomy of a Morbius (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 03:16 (sixteen years ago)

Ok so apparently this is the album version which is also the original extended version featuring the first lineup of the band which included Sandeé of "Notice Me" fame who died last December RIP (the truly chilling moment comes at 5:05 with the brief pause and then build up to "oh oh oh"...it's like a transmission from outer space):

And the video for "What You Don't Know" is classic popism:

As much new wave, post punk, thrash metal and shit as I love from the 80s, Exposé is one of my most favorite things from that whole decade. I could vote for at least 9 of these.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 04:40 (sixteen years ago)

"Point of No Return". I love a bunch of these songs. I wonder if because of freestyle they were more popular in Florida than elsewhere? I left Florida in 1987 and my pop landscape changed dramatically moving to Georgia (in a nutshell, less pop, more rock and country), but that may have reflected a nationwide shift as well (the Rhino 80s box set drops off in the late 80s). But in Florida these ladies were on the radio constantly, along with "Boom Boom" and "Barbara's Bedroom" and other wonderful trinkets of the time.

wide swing juggalo (Euler), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno, I was in Alabama during the entire run of their popularity and I heard them on the radio almost non-stop from 1986-88.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 07:35 (sixteen years ago)

They took off in Florida, and were probably, along with Stevie B, the rulers of the freestyle landscape from 1985 through 1990. But as pointed out, they scored seven consecutive pop top tens, including one #1 ("Seasons Change"), and then a final one when the group and freestyle were way past their sell-by date ("I'll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me" from 1992!), so it definitely wasn't a local phenomenon.

Anatomy of a Morbius (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 13:18 (sixteen years ago)

They were based in Miami. I have their first 45 - "Point of No Return" - which is credited to "X-Posed." It's the Sandee line-up mentioned above.

Josefa, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I have that X-Posed 12-inch. Anyway, best Expose' single is the 10-minute-flat "Point Of No Return/Come Go With Me/Exposed To Love" Megamix on the B-side of the "Seasons Change" 12-inch (which made my P&J Top 10 singles list in '87), but if I have to pick only one song per se', "Point Of No Return" it is.

Also, fwiw, Sandee's solo 1991 Only Time Will Tell is a great album. Had no idea that she'd died.

Wanted to make sure "Let Me Be the One" got a vote, but I could have gone for 4 or 5 others.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I saw Exposé live twice in the '80s. They sang with a full band.

Josefa, Sunday, 9 August 2009 01:40 (sixteen years ago)

Can someone point me in the direction of more Expose-like stuff, i.e. quintessentially '80s manufactured girl groups with a bit of a tropical vibe. The closest example I can think of is Bananarama, who I like. Maybe the Go-go's except they were more like a band and not very manufactured...

Not exactly the same, but get thee to some Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 9 August 2009 06:54 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for that tip. I'd dismissed Lisa Lisa based on one song I didn't like fronm the late 80s (can't remember which one) but so far I'm liking other stuff I've found on youtube.

Can't go wrong with the other manufactured Freestyle girl groups: Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation. And definitely classic freestyle singles like "Fascinated" by Company B if you haven't heard 'em.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 9 August 2009 07:02 (sixteen years ago)

Try Timber/Tommy Boy's Freestyle - Greatest Beats: The Complete Collection series, first two volumes most consistent. And not quite a girl group but get thee to Kid Creole & The Coconuts for a tropical vibe (although The Coconuts had an iffy album under their own name).

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 9 August 2009 07:30 (sixteen years ago)

Also look for the Flirts, who were active in the 82 to 85 period.. their later stuff is like freestyle while the earlier stuff is more like Italo Disco & they did some oddball songs like "Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox" which I guess was a dis on Joan Jett.

Josefa, Sunday, 9 August 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

And Exposé´s producer's follow-up girl group project was called Sequal (note the misspelling) & they were great on such songs as "It's Not Too Late."

Josefa, Sunday, 9 August 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

Thank you for this invigorating and unexpected poll! No disrespect but I was exhausted from participating in polls where I had to decide which John Cale song exerted least pressure on my thorax. "What You Don't Know" is my favorite because it's so frantic and naughty.

Please don't eat my spine. (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Sunday, 9 August 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)

Anyway, best Expose' single is the 10-minute-flat "Point Of No Return/Come Go With Me/Exposed To Love" Megamix on the B-side of the "Seasons Change" 12-inch.

uh ysi pls?

"Exposed To Love" and "Come Go With Me" waaay hotter than the perfectly fine "Let Me Be The One."

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 9 August 2009 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

^I agree. It's like "Point of No Return" took all the uptempo votes & "Let Me Be the One" pulled a few votes from the mid-tempo fans.

Josefa, Monday, 10 August 2009 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

I love "Seasons Change" too, though I'm not surprised it didn't get any votes. It's funny that it was the only pop chart #1, although it's bookended by there by Tiffany's "Could've Been" and "Father Figure" so I guess ballads were the thing right then.
