"how can he / she *also* like that crap?"

Inspired by a posting on a message board somewhere else where someone who loved (as I do) Robert Wyatt and the Human League also had nice things to say about a band as risible as Lindisfarne ... on a similar subject: when were you most surprised / stunned / frustrated / depressed that somebody whose tastes went pretty much along with yours could have one massive blind spot, not a band you loved they hated, but a band you hated they loved?

I can't name names, but a close friend of mine really really liked Ocean Colour Scene back in the day. A shame really, as he had / has sound taste apart from that.

I usually try and find out why they like that artist and, unless I'm absolutely sure they're worthless, have another listen. You never know.

Examples where this approach has worked : Pet Shop Boys, Jimi Hendrix (both a long time ago)and Roni Size. Examples where it hasn't : Joni Mitchell, Marc Almond, Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention (sorry Robin).

I like people liking loads of different things and it's not as if they play the shite ones to me. I'm always a bit baffled by Ned liking Oasis but Ned wouldn't be Ned if he didn't like Oasis.

Whenever people (singular of course, but no names) claim that ‘Pet Sounds’ is their favourite record my lip curls. I mean… such GHASTLY good taste… so obviously regurgitated, and anyway the surf records are better, and the Surfaris better still. If it didn’t top every Mojo poll and did way before he (sorry they) bought it, it wouldn’t be so bad… but really…. There is no excuse.

Yay me! Look, you want the reason I like Oasis? "Columbia" and "Slide Away." There are other songs, but those two alone are enough.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

FACT: I made a mixtape for Tom Ewing once and he specifically asked that I include Oasis's "Slide Away" ;)

Anyhow, there was this one guy I always talked to tons and we got on real well and he was extremely good looking, and we liked all the same things, except then he liked Kula Shaker. I was like, what? Where did that come from? Kula Shaker my arse.

And I will always be baffled by Tom and Fred's insistance that the Magnetic Fields are in any way worth listening to.

Ally, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Ha! Tom has a weak spot and I claim my ten dollars. Or something. Although to be fair I guess I could say that Martin Rossiter's quaver sometimes works. For two seconds.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

No, I never find a blind spot. Because usually by that time they are rolling on the floor laughing that I actually bought *insert a crap record*.

My editor. I'd better say no more on this, it would only cause pointless ructions.

the pinefox, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

The Love Of My Life/Joy Of My Existence loves, adores and listens to scadloads of twee, of which the least offensive is this Belle and Sebastian/Trembling Blue Stars malarchy. We need discuss this no more.

Bit late, maybe, to respond to something that was written two years ago but, is this the band Magnetic Fields, or the album Magnetic Fields? :-)

:-) the construct could hardly suggest the latter.

Geir, you chucklehead.

My best friend Emma likes David Devant too. Ack.

I am always shocked by my friend Lucas' liking for Shed Seven (he's your usual London indie hipster - bad bleach sections, torn jeans, media job, venerates Gang of Four and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with ventures into house and electro. This sounds like a slag off, I love him dearly.) He only admits it when he's drunk and blames the CD on his housemate.
