Julian Plenti Is... Skyscraper

Just got Paul Banks from Interpol's new solo record, Julian Plenti Is... Skyscraper (under the name "Julian Plenti.")

First impressions after several listens: GOOD! Right now I'd place it below the first two Interpol records, and just above the third.

Cover art is execrable though.

I need to give it a little more time to sink in, but its leaving my unimpressed after a first listen. There are a few moments where I think he comes really close to capturing something special, but it ends up being just kinda flat and blah.

The one that sounds like the Stockholm Monsters -- shit, what's it called? Seventh track, I think; can't be arsed going to look -- is just fantastic. Some of the rest of it is great. Right now, though, I can't remember much else about it. Shit, I reviewed it last week and I can't even remember what I wrote.

That's not good. Although it might say more about me than the record.

"Only If You Run" is the only thing by this fool I've liked since "Evil" and a couple of tracks from the first one. All he's good at projecting sexual smarm.

Sexual smarm doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for him.

this record is actually pretty good
