Best pop album of the 80s? Discuss....

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, how many times have we typed this tonight??? haha

My name is martin fry F R Y. who needs the moon when we've got the stars?

Hi, im eden. I want you to kiss my snatch!

Howdy disco citizens, i'm david yarritu. i might be tiny, but i'm strong!!

Mark white, thats right. Mark white, that's right

SEN? MARTIN FRY DICE YOU FASS!

Ron, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian time to take your medication. LEXICON OF LOVE clearly classiquer.

nathalie, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure about this "best ever" shit, but if we're discussing ABC, it all begins and ends squarely with LEXICON OF LOVE -- easily their finest hour.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I need a new doctor altogether. Janet Jackson's "Control" clearly beats out either...

Still though... "Vanity Kills! It... don't... pay.... bills. Vanity Kills! YOU... LIKE... YOU... UNH!"

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Janet Jackson beats nothing, apart from a high-powered bile expectorant.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that the one that has the line "I...want...you...to...kiss...my...snatch"? Are you saying inventing Kitty-Yo Records is a great achievement?

dave q, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ABCs second record i seem to remember being very good, and the first had a good opening three minutes

"how to be .." completely threw me when i first saw it on TOTPs with ABC as suddenly new image "freak show" band -- this was before Frankie came too etc ?

george gosset, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Lexicon" is great & all, but there's nothing on it that's the equal of "Be Near Me." The thread title is correct.

John Darnielle, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

MOBY STOLE HIS WHOLE LOOK FROM THAT GUITAR PLAYER

chaki, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell, Gorillaz stole their whole concept from the videos.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ABC are of it's time. I'd say Spaceman 3's drug induced drone marathons get my vote.

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm down with "Lexicon", but yeah, now that you mention it..."Be Near Me", a great, great song.

And, as an aside, was not the super-weird "Look of Love" remix, from the 12-inch, WAAAY ahead of its time? It still freaks people out when I play it.

Matt Riedl (veal), Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Cause Julio, you know, you're only allowed to like EITHER SP3 or ABC! (?)

Clarke B., Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio's statement = "coffee makes me jittery sometimes, and has a predictable flavor. i prefer volvos."

Clarke B., Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved the first one, liked the second, but found the third to be a huge disappointment. Hated "Be Near Me", and found that freakish image to be unsettling in a bad way. Whatever happened to Martin Fry, btw?

Sean, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian asks: Whether the ABC track is the 'Best pop rec/alb of the 80s? Discuss....'

I say ABC are of its time and I think that S3 droning on is more listenable today.

''Julio's statement = "coffee makes me jittery sometimes, and has a predictable flavor. i prefer volvos."''

Point out where exactly did I say that ABC was 'predictable'. Only reason i mention S3 is 'cause i was listening to a rec of theirs this morning.

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No way The First Madonna record is a much better overall album!! though I can't say I listen to either anymore...

brg30, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That first Madonna album (which I love) is so inferior to _How To Be A Zillionaire_ that it isn't even funny.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(However, neither is _Rhythm Of Youth_, _Please_, _Parade_, _Talk Talk Talk_, _Japanese Whispers_, _Around The World In A Day_, _Black Celebration_, _Pretty Hate Machine_, _Remission_, _Control_, or _Rotund For Success_, so the answer to Brian's original question is still "Nope".)

Dan Perry, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll still take "Songs From The Big Chair" or "Spirit Of Eden" anytime

brg30, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SPEAKING IN TONGUES

Keiko, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

woodbeez!!!

william harris, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a good pop record but there a bunch of better ones from the 80's. three that come to mind are 1999, purple rain, and sign o the times.

dan, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...

mantrapper, Friday, 7 January 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

10!
20!
30!
40!

There's the origin of Big Beat right there.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 7 January 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

If it is, I just bought the best 80s pop record for $2.50 2 days ago.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 7 January 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

this is once album i really need to find on cd. i couldn't believe it when i was recently re-reading the credits on that album and saw the ON-U Sound connection in the session musicians ! mad.
great pop album. always makes me burst a great big cheesy smile. something that Lexicon doesn't do (that just makes me go all gooey)

mark e (mark e), Friday, 7 January 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I have a DJ mix tape from 1990 that brilliantly mashes up the "Zillionaire" acapella with Royal House's "Can You Party":

*CAAAAAAAN YOUUUU FEEEEEEEL IIIT?*

da-da-DUN-DUN-DA-DA-DA

*WHOOOOAH YEEEEEAAAAH"

da-DUN-DUN-DERR-DERR-DERR-DERR

"I'VE SEEN THE FUTURE - I CAN'T AFFORD IT...."

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
Zillionaire fucking kills.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 5 February 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

Great album and their second best next to Lexicon (which beats it only 'cause of the juicy Trevor Horn production).

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 5 February 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

open your minds and play abc "up"

La Camilla Henemark, Saturday, 5 February 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

come on, it has fifteen story halo! that's like a whole album in one song.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Saturday, 5 February 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Too funny: I was playing my cassette copy a few days ago. It's probably their second best album, but apart from "Tower of London" and three singles there's not much holding it together.

"Be Near Me" seems to be a lost classic, no? On the radio I hear "When Smokey Sings" (blah) far more often. And I never hear "How to be a Millionaire".

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 5 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

"Between You And Me" has to be some kind of lost classic as well. I've said on ILM before that though ABC had many strengths, tunes (many decent ones notwithstanding) were not really one of them. This--along with Beauty Stab's "S.O.S."--surely refutes that argument.

As for it being among the Great 80's Records, it bears repeating that Zillionaire has fucking sick programming. Everything is so fucking garish -- the horn BLASTS, the dead-on TR-303 basslines, and the crazy percussion samples in songs like the title track, "Fear of the World", "A To Z", and "Tower of London". Lexicon on steroids.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 6 February 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

It's all about the Munich Disco Mix!

mr.raffles, Sunday, 7 April 2013 02:40 (twelve years ago)

five months pass...

after the ABC thread revive put this one on instead. The fretless bass on "Ocean Blue" is divine.

Euler, Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:42 (twelve years ago)

Please forever eclipsed this record but it's a good one in its own right.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:44 (twelve years ago)

for me this album equates to : on-u sound vs ztt ...

tuff call ..

mark e, Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:48 (twelve years ago)

I love all the 12" mixes - so many I can't keep them straight. I think the Bond St mix of the title tracks was the best and the extended version of "Towers Of London" rock-ified the sound.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 27 September 2013 02:05 (twelve years ago)

The "Munich Disco Mix" was a revelation to this 14 yr old.
Along with the record sleeve and the Melody Maker or NME cover/interview (i forget which) that Spring, I was sold.

Was weird seeing them do so well here in the US with Be Near Me. Nobody in my ghetto New England town liked it (it used to clear the dancefloor at the local 18 and under dance), but it was fun knowing somebody did.

mr.raffles, Friday, 27 September 2013 03:14 (twelve years ago)

two years pass...

Hmm. I definitely think that 'Be Near Me' is up there as being one of ABC's best-ever songs, and I have more than a soft spot for 'Ocean Blue' which has some lovely fretless bass playing, and some of the frantic Fairlight drum programming is undoubtedly to my liking, but on the other hand, there's some woeful shit on this record, particularly the awful '15 Storey Halo' - I kinda get a kind of similar hollow emptiness from this record as I do from Adam and the Ants' Prince Charming album.

That The Lexicon of Love knocks ...Zillionaire into a cocked hat should go without saying, but I definitely think Beauty Stab is a superior record too: stronger songs, and rocks much harder.

Turrican, Monday, 2 November 2015 22:52 (ten years ago)

ten years pass...

The song "How To Be A Millionaire" is a proper 80's banger with one of Martin Fry's best lyrics...so prescient..."I've seen the future, huh, I can't afford it, uh
Tell you the truth, sir, someone just bought it"
"Larger than life and twice as ugly
If we have to live there, you'll have to drug me"

Chapeau Sir

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Thursday, 20 November 2025 04:04 (four days ago)

I've actually never heard this album but I love Lexicon of Love so should I get it

frogbs, Thursday, 20 November 2025 04:07 (four days ago)

It's definitely under appreciated and I think it's aged pretty well...no 'Lexicon Of Love' but it has it's moments

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Thursday, 20 November 2025 04:11 (four days ago)

It's good not great and also doesn't really live in the same world as Lexicon (same is true for Beauty Stab... they are three distinctly different records).

Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 20 November 2025 05:39 (four days ago)

How about A Secret Wish as the best 80s pop record?

furtho, Friday, 21 November 2025 12:41 (three days ago)

"Be Near Me" is the ABC single I hear most in the wild.

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 21 November 2025 13:05 (three days ago)

The one I used to hear the most was "When Smokey Sings," but "Be Near Me" I do hear now and then. It's lovely. Never hear "Millionaire," but yeah, it's up there with "President Gas" as far as jaundiced, cynical pop/rock goes.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 21 November 2025 14:08 (three days ago)

and I sing excellent karaoke versions of both.

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 21 November 2025 14:33 (three days ago)

Do you ape Butler or do your own thing?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 21 November 2025 14:48 (three days ago)

I sing the ABC songs. A little of both. "When Smokey Sings" is perfectly in my range.

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 21 November 2025 14:49 (three days ago)

How about A Secret Wish as the best 80s pop record?

It's certainly a rather stronger contender for the title than How To Be a Zillionare. Cripes.

Vast Halo, Friday, 21 November 2025 14:53 (three days ago)

"Be Near Me" is always on the Sirius 80s channel (not complaining). The New Wave specific station prefers "Poison Arrow."

I never hear "When Smokey Sings" anymore, even though (as a function of being a pop addicted 10yo in 1988) it was the ABC song for me for the longest time.

cryptosicko, Friday, 21 November 2025 14:56 (three days ago)

"When Smokey Sings" is the ABC song I always hear at CVS.

henry s, Friday, 21 November 2025 15:14 (three days ago)

I don’t really like Martin Fry’s voice. He has a cool shaped head though
