I cannot help it if Lou Reed is the sexiest being who ever lived on this Matrix thing. I cannot help it. That is not my fault.

I will try to play this Cole thing and be quiet, but I really believe that there might be peace on earth if we could only have all of this Matrix thing for our ears. Maybe the human race could be better than its ever been. Maybe the light will shine into our eyes. Maybe Lou will save us. Little children will laugh and smile, and it will all come together.

the Loverboy epiphany:

I don't know why, I really don't. I've said this on the other threads, but I do not understand how this band, who I would have been absolutely mortified to have been associated with only 36 hours or so ago are absolutely doing it for me right now. I didn't give a shit about their singles when they came out. I saw the videos back then and I thought they were a stupid band. But this Classics thing of their greatest hits is just absolutely doing it for me right now. I'd suspect I'm the only one here who might be willing to talk about the music, but I think they go really well with Journey on the same plate and in any case, that picture is of a dude's ass and anyone who thought different is pretty insane in my book.

I can't believe he's gone.

But I ask all of ILX...what ELSE DO YOU NEED FROM ROCK AND ROLL than "Guess I'm Falling In Love"?

Because I don't fucking need a goddamn thing from rock and roll besides that. Get on board this train with me, man. Are they not the shit? Is this stuff not the shit? Are they not the one and only band who could outdo the Stooges? Or should we (god forbid) do a Velvets vs. Stooges poll?

Brad C., Thursday, 6 August 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks for reviving this Alfred, cause I would have done it myself pretty soon (or maybe that other thread that asks for a reevaluation of H&O). I honestly don't know why I've found myself so fascinated with these guys right now. I mean, throughout the 80's I didn't dislike them, but they were just kindof...there. I only bought like maybe three of their singles, tops.

I listened to the War Babies album earlier tonight but I only really like the first half. It just gets to heavy and proggy and concepty after awhile, stretches my patience. But that is probably Todd Rundgren's problem rather than theirs.

I heard "Family Man" for the first time since it came out tonight and I swear to god, I do not remember that song at all even though I know I heard it when it was a hit. It's so weird.

So I am going to seek out some of their 80's albums cause I really do want to hear more. And you were right, Alfred about those tracks you recommended from H20, they were quite nice.

LAURA NYRO IS THE BEST FEMALE MUSICIAN/SONGWRITER TO HAVE EVER RECORDED EVER

I have decided this after very careful thought. She has transcended Ms. Kate for me. I am serious. I am spellbound.

And I especially wanted to note the ONE TWO punch of "Woman's Blues" followed by "Once It Was Alright Now (Farmer Joe)" which made me want to fucking dance around at work today. I don't know if it's her voice or the drumming, but my god, my fucking god. I can be STONE COLD SOBER and that shit SENDS ME OVER THE MOON. I am serious.

I remember the day I found that EP of theirs called "To You With Regard". I found it in a Philadelphia record store. I was absolutely aghast cause I never thought I'd find it. This was extra weird because I actually saw a guy in that store who I knew from my hometown which was 2 hours away. This is what it was like, folks. I had to drive 2 or more hours to find the records which are so easily available through you computers. But yeah it was weird, I saw this guy at the store flipping through records like me, and I knew him from my hometown 2 hours away by car. I never really knew him all that well, though.

Also, I'm determined to keep calm tonight about the music I love, but I just want to say that her song "Outside The Rain", I heard that on my iPod while running through this HUGE graveyard near my house a couple months ago with my friend, and I can't now divorce that feeling from the song itself. I felt like a child, and its a reminder that this gorgeous HUGE graveyard is near my house and I have only to walk a few blocks and I'm in that place again in my mind. There's something incredible about a child running through the greenery of nature, and she summed up that whole feeling for me.

Not so much ecstatic as manic, but Pj Harvey & headphones & Bimble, here we go...

I was asleep, and then all of a sudden I awoke and I heard "Black Hearted Love" in my ears so loud as if I was actually hearing it. And then I got out of bed to realize it's 6 AM and remembered I broke my headphones last night and there is no goddamn justice in this world and as soon as the store opens (in what, 4 hours??) I am going to buy 5 pairs of fucking headphones if it kills me. I am going to stockpile headphones because this is like the 3rd or 4th fucking time this has happened to me and even my friend, even him - he took my other pair of headphones because I didn't like them and told him he could have them and oh my god. No justice in this world.

AAAAAAH!!!!! SOMEONE IS MENTIONING ROBERT RENTAL ON THIS BOARD I'M GOING TO HAVE AN ORGASM!

Now I admit I heard some solo stuff of him that was lackluster, (I didn't see the worth in Private Planes, for example) but I dearly dearly dearly love the LP he did with Thomas Leer - The Bridge was it called? You know the one I mean 1979. God I love that thing. One of my most treasured LP's ever. The best song is - oh fuck I just realized I haven't ripped that to my computer yet. This is a tragedy of immense proportions. Especially since the speakers to my record player are not working properly now. BUT I know I've ripped that best song on it to my computer before because it appeared on my 8-Disc set of songs from 1979. It's called "Day Breaks and Night Heals". Talk about early electro.

I guess I'm not sure I knew he had a live album with the Normal, I mean Miller. I'm just not totally sure I've heard that or not.

Okay WOWWWW these Steeltown extra tracks BLEW MY MIND. I mean as if listening to the entirety of the original Steeltown album today at work in my headphones wasn't enough of a delightful experience - haven't heard it in many, many years and I was amazed to learn it was a Lillywhite production, I never knew or remembered that he had produced them. Listen to the drums the way they crack as if each is a rimshot all its own. Listen to the primitive rumble of the bass. Holy hell, and as if they didn't PLAY well as musicians I mean oh my god. They fucking shred.

So then these extra tracks come along and I'm like holy hell what is this? I've never heard this before. I'm talking about "Bass Dance", "Belief In The Small Man" (my favourite - what a tune!) and "Prairie Rose". Why is there no thread for The Cure's Disintegration?

I've looked everywhere for a thread for this album. Why is there none? Surely this one deserves its own thread? I mean this is the album that finally made the Cure more or less a household name in the States, for one thing.

I pulled it out today on a whim sortof, and I was surprised that when "Fascination Street" came on, it suddenly sounded 3X better than it ever had before. I'm stunned about that, I really don't understand it. I guess a broader understanding or appreciation of post-punk helps...that song was never a fave of mine before. Strange hindsight.

Anyway, Disintegration is an album that has had several lives for me since it came out. There aren't that many albums that have been so enduring for me, it's quite unique in that respect. Although I suppose I would concede that you might have to be in a certain mood for it.

And I'm not quite certain why I didn't make this a poll...I just wanted to talk about it as a whole. Someone else can do a poll if they want.

"Same Deep Water As You" was always my favourite.

New display name coming soon (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 7 August 2009 05:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I referenced this on the RIP thread: the 4AD vocalist poll series was (naturally) teeming w/ vintage Bimble. Over the course of these threads, I got to know him a bit better through email, as we were reciprocating various files at the time. Unlike many of you, I don't have a lot of IRL or otherwise extraneous contact with other ILXors, so as ephemeral as my bond with Bimble may have been, I felt like I was just starting to kind of get to know him & was looking forward to corresponding directly, even if mainly regarding music, with this new friend I had made. And then all of this.. I guess this is getting a little beyond the spectrum of what this thread is supposed to entail, but I'm not going to go back and repost it on the RIP thread, so I just stfu & post my favorite Bimble exchange from the 4AD polls:

I love all you guys, really, but you have to try to understand the history of 4AD records. All you people who voted Black Francis are in need of an education. Scott Walker is another matter, but to vote Black Francis shows a blatant ignorance of everything. Yes, the Pixies were brilliant as hell but they HAD PEERS ON THIS LABEL HELLO! HELLO~! I'm talking about major, major, major CLASSIC GOTHDOM here. MAJOR CLASSIC 4AD GOTHDOM. And you want to vote for Black Francis? Did you own the 4AD catalogue prior to 1986? No you did not. You did not grasp the essence. Repent. Repent now. You know not what you do.

My good goth rock friend left...so I can play Stevie on video over and over and he won't interfere. Jesus.

I keep my visions to myself. Alfred, she's going to kill me.

Haha, Mordy -- that's what his emails to me were like. If I don't go out I'll retire and awaken fairly early, so I'd open my mailbox and see Bimbs' stuff sent at 3 or 4 am. When he responded tO MY responses, he was always on. Hours of the morning and night seemed insignificant to him in his 4AD sanctuary.
