Looks as though the final three installments in this series were never completed (possibly due to indifference), so I'll take it upon myself to finish them.

haw! i vaguely remember contributing to this series of polls once upon a once. hey, any chance to vote for my beloved Iron Fist is not a chance to be passed up. besides, xhuxk still owes me a drink (or two).

Ioannis, Saturday, 8 August 2009 11:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Welcome To Hell is there twice. Anyway the correct answer is Starz.

Matt #2, Saturday, 8 August 2009 11:30 (fifteen years ago) link

the 2nd Venom entry should be Black Metal, iirc.

Ioannis, Saturday, 8 August 2009 11:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, it should. Thank you.

Devotion is ridiculously great.

Sundar, Saturday, 8 August 2009 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

ts: Devotion vs. Red.

Ioannis, Saturday, 8 August 2009 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Lots I like more (in fact, this may well be one of the worst records up there), but I almost voted for Lul's Inside Little Oral Annie. I mean, wtf? I can't even imagine what that sounds like now. (On the other hand, I had to look up Tooth and Nail in my own book just to be reminded about what it was. Okay...that sounds vaguely familiar.)

Voted for Starz, though, after all was said and done.

xhuxk, Saturday, 8 August 2009 22:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Though fwiw, I actually I like their second LP Violation (not in the book) more.

xhuxk, Saturday, 8 August 2009 22:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Listening to some of these for the first time ever today. The Lul is very fascinating, kinda like (prog?) metal recorded so trebly and tinny that it sounds like Pussy Galore. But the ever-shifting (prog?) PG of Dial M For Motherfucker. I'm intrigued.

Paris - So if Welch stayed on board and Buckingham/Nicks never stepped on, then Rumours might have sounded like...Led Zep???

I went for Metal Circus. Most durable.

ts: Devotion vs. Red

Devotion by a wide margin for me, and I like Red OK. A great balance of craft/technique and immediate heavy rock passion and intensity from before McLaughlin became a total shredder.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Honest answer is AC/DC. But I have mega love for that Green River e.p. so I'll go with that.

How's that King's X album?

Sundar, Friday, 14 August 2009 02:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I really like "It's Love".

Sundar, Friday, 14 August 2009 02:05 (fifteen years ago) link

You can't really step on Back in Black, but that Mountain album 'Climbing!' is really killer. A few years back I got into listening to bunches of late 60s early 70s hard rock bands albums that I didn't really know and the first Mountain album is one of the better ones. There is a sad almost sentimental tone to some of Mountain's songs that is a bit different than most of their contemporaries.

OPERATION MINDCRIME

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 14 August 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago) link

(Jesus, misspellings galore, Welcome to Hell twice, and no effort at all to add the dozens of necessary umlauts...I should learn to proofread)

Metal Circus may be my favourite Husker Du album/EP, Iron Fist was a worthy finale for the O.G. Motorhead, and nearly everything from 1970 is voteworthy. But there's no way I can snub MX-80 Sound, even if it's their weakest vinyl release.

Why is 38 Special on this list?

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

That was unexpected. I voted for Bad Brains, though I forgot to rep for it.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost - Yeah Earlnash. There are some especially beautiful songs on Nantucket Sleighride. Also some real barnstormers like "Don't Look Around".

Nate Carson, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:29 (fifteen years ago) link

fair results

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 15 August 2009 01:07 (fifteen years ago) link

..if "fair" means "mediocre." (Knew I should have kept Jane's out of the book.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 15 August 2009 01:09 (fifteen years ago) link

in what universe is Jane's Addiction metal? Perry Farrell is probably vomiting somewhere at the thought.

Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Janitor (Elvin Wayburn Phillips), Saturday, 15 August 2009 01:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Of all the performers appearing in the book, maybe 6% of 'em would willingly describe themselves as metal. (And I can picture Neil Young being among that 6%, the lovable old contrarian.)
