To ensure maximum credibility, selections are taken from 20 Golden Greats, Buddy Holly's Greatest Hits and highlights from the Apartment demos. He has a lot of great songs, to put it very mildly.

need some serious time to consider this one

funky house septics (PappaWheelie V), Sunday, 9 August 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

It's astounding when you consider that he died at 22. Who knows what he would have done.

Rave On.

ENBB, Sunday, 9 August 2009 03:31 (sixteen years ago)

Gotta agree with ENBB, Rave On, out of what, maybe 15 or so stone cold classics?

Hannahdoot, Sunday, 9 August 2009 03:39 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, there are so many great ones but RO just stands out for me.

ENBB, Sunday, 9 August 2009 03:40 (sixteen years ago)

I was so ready to click on the "like" feature for that kids in the hall post

Wait! shit, it's not too late. Gotta be "Heartbeat".

PIN number at the ATM Machine (Z S), Sunday, 9 August 2009 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

There are about five here I could vote for. Right now it's Well All Right, but we'll see after a couple days of robust Buddy Holly listening.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 9 August 2009 04:32 (sixteen years ago)

i love a whole lot of these and "rave on" is probably the real answer, but i voted "oh boy" for sheer exuberance -- and for the "stars appear and shadows are fallin'" bridge.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 9 August 2009 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

If you could only have one, it'd have to be "Rave," so...But I've been listening more to "Oh Boy" of late.

Michael Train, Sunday, 9 August 2009 05:03 (sixteen years ago)

Guys I really really love Buddy Holly.

ENBB, Sunday, 9 August 2009 05:04 (sixteen years ago)

Everyday, b/c my emotions were manipulated by Stand By Me.

Disagreeing with me would make you a carpist. (Pillbox), Sunday, 9 August 2009 05:05 (sixteen years ago)

I'm gonna hold off on voting for now because there's too much goodness and right it's like "Learning the Game", no wait "Crying Waiting Hoping", no wait...so better to relisten first.

deep olives (Euler), Sunday, 9 August 2009 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

i love that jerry allison played the drum part for "everyday" on his knees.

"It Doesn't Matter Anymore"

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 9 August 2009 08:26 (sixteen years ago)

There's like 10 tracks I could vote for, but I'm feeling boring and thus am voting for Peggie Sue.

Released on the Coral label in 1957. Although most people would consider this to be by Buddy Holly, at the time he was the uncredited singer of The Crickets, and his name does not appear on the label. This song was, of course, covered by The Rolling Stones in 1964 and became their first UK top 10 hit.

I'm actually kinda shocked that I'm the first one to mention "Not Fade Away" but I always feel like most poll posts are attended to first by the challopsy types who then scratch their heads once the sensible results are revealed.

hey is that a 78?

amateurist, Sunday, 9 August 2009 09:47 (sixteen years ago)

Buddy Holly is one of my favorite rockers ever.

I'm torn between Not Fade Away and I'm Lookin For Someone To Love, which gets stuck in my head the most in recent years. Decisions, decisions.

COuld easily vote for Heartbeat, Maybe Baby, True Love Ways, Well . . . All Right, or any of them, really. So, so amazing. I'm going to go with Heartbeat for no other reason than that it lead to a great cover by The Knack.

Id rather dig ditches than pull another dudes string (Pancakes Hackman), Sunday, 9 August 2009 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

This was hard, to put it mildly. Went for Peggy Sue, but you could make a case for nearly any song here.

Hey mighty brontosaurus! (Boxing Kangaroo), Sunday, 9 August 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

There are half a dozen perfect songs on this list. I'm kind of a sap for "True Love Ways," but I'll go with "Well ... All Right."

Looking back at my own listening history, I don't think anyone has incited more singing along than Buddy Holly.

Brad C., Sunday, 9 August 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

Went with Oh Boy just for it being the first [none-nursary I suppose] song I remember really liking.

DavidM, Sunday, 9 August 2009 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

No Moondreams, no credibility

kornrulez6969, Monday, 10 August 2009 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

"Well...All Right", but you can't really go too far wrong with those selections

already have voter's regret

Everyday

Flea Kuti (PappaWheelie V), Thursday, 13 August 2009 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

I went with "Learning the Game". I love this song for many reasons, but one is the awkwardness of the following verse:

"When she says that you're the only one she'll ever love
Then you find that you are not the one she's thinking of."

In the second line he unpacks the contracted "you're" to "you are", and as a result sounds stately and dignified. He's learning the game.

deep olives (Euler), Thursday, 13 August 2009 06:33 (sixteen years ago)

Everyday, but it could have been Oh Boy, Rave On, Peggy Sue or five other songs.

I’m Lookin’ For Someone To Love

Guys, this is the neglected diamond!

Mark G, Thursday, 13 August 2009 08:35 (sixteen years ago)

Now I'm regretting not listing Slipping and Sliding from the Apartment demos. In a year and a half of recording, the dude had an absolute buttload of killer songs. Man oh man.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 13 August 2009 13:54 (sixteen years ago)

I voted "That'll Be The Day," because it's one of my favorite mean-spirited rock songs ever.

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Thursday, 13 August 2009 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

how about "peggy sue" vs. "peggy sue got married"? i've always preferred the sequel, partly for its teasing meta qualities ("i don't say that it's true/ i'll just leave that up to you"), but mostly for its sense that the endless possibilities of youth promised in most of his music are already disappearing. and i think the hooks are more fully developed than in "peggy sue."

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 13 August 2009 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

xp I almost imagine the other partner in that relationship singing "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". You asshole!

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Thursday, 13 August 2009 14:03 (sixteen years ago)

Staying at home
Waiting for you
Just won't get it
'Cause you say we're through

Well, I'm lookin' for someone to love
I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
Well, if you're not here
But baby, I don't care
'Cause I'm a-lookin' for someone to love

Playin' the field
All day long
Since I found out
I was wrong

Well, I'm lookin' for someone to love
I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
Well, if you're not here
But baby, I don't care
'Cause I'm a-lookin' for someone to love

Caught myself
Thinkin' of you
You can't love me
And another one too

Well, I'm lookin' for someone to love
Yeah, I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
Well, if you're not here
But baby, I don't care
'Cause I'm a-lookin' for someone to love

Drunk man
Street car
Foot slip
There you are

Well, I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
Yeah, I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
Well, if you're not here
But baby, I don't care
'Cause I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
I'm a-lookin' for someone to love
I'm a-lookin' for someone to love

Slipping and Sliding from the Apartment demos

My favorite Buddy Holly moment & also the reason I hold out hope that unreleased tracks on box sets will be worthwhile. Voted Well ... Alright.

dad a, Thursday, 13 August 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

Words of Love

it sure doesn't rock - its closer to the Chordettes or other white doo-wop stuff in construction - but I love the glockenspiel+handclapping combination, it creates such a weird gentle pop vibe. and then of course the melody is fantastic and has been ripped off many times (I'm lookin at you Malkmus)

interesting winner. no complaints, i love everything that got votes, and many that didn't. i just wouldn't have expected that one in particular.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 13 August 2009 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm surprised too. It's one of his more obscure songs. It's a legitimate masterpiece and it got my vote, but I figured Everyday or Peggy Sue would win.
