On one hand, the insturmental track of the song is actually good. Its just the actuallyrics of the music. There incomprehensable! What i mean is that you don't knowwhat the hell they are supposed to be singing about. For those who may not likeMichael Mcdonald, his voice in this song doesn't help. Patti Labelle is in here with her high but mediocre singing voice.

mm has nothing to answer for here! and patti is laid back and super elegant
what's incomprehensible? i do like it as a mirror image to 'knew you were waiting' (even better song but i've always seen them as of a piece)

This is one of the ONLY instances in which McDonald's voice doesn't make me sick.

The lyrics are pretty easy to understand. McDonald and LaBelle make a decent duo and yosemi is right, this is a mirror image of the Aretha/G. Michael duet.

for the record, I like Michael McDonald. There are some people who can't stand his voice. This is one of those songs of his that he is actually subtle and not trying to be big sounding. As i said, the insturmental track is wonderful.
It's just the lyrics of this song. There a bit muddled.

ending that stanza w/ "and we weren't even married..." was always sort of wtf, historically it's the part where i start listening to the lyrics so point taken i suppose. always liked michael's intro (so many promises...), seems like they routinely wrung more drama out of that 2nd intro spot in the 80's (cf. 'fire and desire' oh man)
