Intended at first to poll all of their albums, but obviously "Don't Dream It's Over" would walk the first one while hardly anyone has heard the second (but excellent) one. So I might as well start with this way more famous album

"Four Seasons In One Day" is IMO the best song Neil Finn has ever written, so that one is pretty much hard to escape here.

"Weather With You" towers high on this very good album.

"She Goes On" is pretty much a perfect song. So are "It's Only Natural," "Fall at Your Feet," "Whispers and Moans...."

This album has my favorite Mitchell Froom production; it's got a smokey fireplace-and-pine-trees vibe matched by the songs. The only dud is "Chocolate Cake," which goes on the short list of albums whose worst song is the first.

Not that much of a fan of "Chocolate Cake" myself, but it starts with some brilliant lyrics at least.

The lyrics are the worst part! Besides, the Finns didn't have the kinds of voices suited for Costello snark.

I yelled out for "Italian Plastic" at one of the shows last year. No response. Someone coughed.

had to vote for "Four Seasons" just because it's the one that gets stuck in my head the most. and lord knows t does get stuck in my head. often.

"smiling as the shit comes down/you can tell a man from what he has to say" is one of my favorite lines to sing along with

4 seasons in one day is kind of a perfect song, so that

"It's grim down south"

(bonus point for..)

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

I think I'll vote for Fall At Your Feet, which I love, although the piano riff at the very end annoys me because it sounds just like "Who Loves You" by Frankie Valli.

akm, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think the finns think too much of chocolate cake either, even though it was probably their second biggest hit, they left it off the greatest hits album.

akm, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

"Fall at Your Feet" just edges out "It's Only Natural" for me.

I have to think about this some, but my first inclination is As Sure As I Am, because it's got a kind of hopeful, redemptive feel that I am a total sucker for, plus I think the line "I want everything you throw out" is so sweet and simple.

But then I also have a real soft spot for She Goes On and Four Seasons in One Day and Fall at Your Feet...

(So happy about this poll, btw. I catch some flack for being a big Crowded House fan and sometimes it gets lonely.)

When Crowded House were on Top of the Pops, following the Justified Ancients of MuMu doing "It's Grim up north", they introduced "Fall at your feet" with "It's Grim down south!"

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

I think the last time we did this poll I voted for "It's Only Natural" - so this time I'm voting for "Whispers and Moans".

So many fantastic tracks on there. I absolutely love this record. Played the fuck out of this when it came out (as did my husband).

The "Woodface" poll!

Strangely I didn't find that one when I searched for "woodface". Found no threads at all actually.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 07:29 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, same thing happened to me - but I knew it was there somewhere, so I tried again, this time searching for words in the posts rather than thread titles, and then I found it.

o. nate, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

obviously "Don't Dream It's Over" would walk the first one

whut, "Something So Strong" crushes it like a lite-rock Hulk

'Four Seasons In One Day' is pretty much the perfect piece of songwriting and a really beautiful recording. I learned more about how songs work from listening to that than any other tune I think. I've written a lengthy eulogy for it elsewhere on the boards, so I won't repeat myself - but it gets my vote, obviously.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Whispers and Moans i'd say.
