Ach, I was hoping I could just do it online, but I don't want to have to waste a day turning up.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 15:21 (sixteen years ago)
I would actually do this but, well, like they're going to let in anyone over the age of 30.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)
there's nothing they could to make me wanna buy it ever again (this goes for pretty much every other music mag out there tho)
― unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)
I like the idea of a load of over-40s turning up and demanding they bring back 3000-word essays by Ian Penman.

I know it's not exactly news that the NME doesn't give a toss about anyone who can't spend an evening idling about in London at the drop of a hat, but still.

Kings Reach Tower.
... is dark and empty. IPC moved to the Blue Fin building down the road.
― ledge, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 12:33 (sixteen years ago)
aps has a point. they should do this feedback thing at live shows around the country.

the legacy of McNicholas...
NME down more than 25% year on yearhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/aug/13/magazine-abcs-nme
40,948
had an average weekly circulation of 40,948 in the first half of 2009, down 27.2% on the same period in 2008.
― djmartian, Thursday, 13 August 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
Can't believe that clown has driven down the circulation during an era of unprecedented success for print media.

"now NME nearly at the sales of when Sounds magazine closed in 1991"
There needs to be a death panel for crappy music magazines.

the legacy of McNicholas...start...end
When Conor took over the magazine in June 2002, circulation stood at 70,456. Today's ABC figures put the number of copies sold at 40,948.http://xrrf.blogspot.com/2009/08/folding-magazines-misery-all-round.html

I mean, I told them how old I am, and that I never buy the mag...
― Mark G, Friday, 14 August 2009 16:26 (sixteen years ago)
Was gonna say that Amber and Alice should tell 'em what to do, but then I remembered that A+A are too good for the NME to steal their ideas.
I hope DJ Martian is going round to tell them what's what. MOAR POST-AMBIENT AVANT-ETHEREAL DARKWAVE
If you ask me they should take their remaining money (if indeed there is any) and give it to Plan B to do a few more issues. That is probably why they're not going to ask me.

I read the NME for the first time in about 2 years today. Had to wait just under an hour for a bus so I went to the newsagents, I thought reading about the Julian Casablancas solo album could be quite an interesting way to kill time. It wasn't. They asked the most inane questions including asking him if he was happy, what its like to use keyboards and about 3 times whether this means the Strokes have broken up. The had a "most overrated band ever" section, in which, um, I think my chemical romance won. The only other act I could remember to be interviewed was fucking Pearl Jam, I mean how scared of black folk or whatever can you be, New Musical Express, that you have to find a boring old grunge group that don't even seem to be releasing a record and ask them a bunch of hard hitting questions about kurt? Only interesting review was the Jay Reatard album, and even then that came down to "umm, you guys read Pitchfork right? we've just found it and we love it. oh, they like this guy."
Basically, just close the fucker down already. Or get the guys who were involved with Plan B or Stylus running it.
At least have the balls to cover new things, the reason it must be losing so many readers so quickly is that they seem to have covered the same band (albeit with a new name, haircut and hometown) every fucking issue since before I started - and finished - reading it back when I was their target audience. The nations teenagers quite clearly loved Kanye and Dizzee as much as they loved The Strokes and The Arctic Monkeys this decade, so bloody acknowledge it. It would most probably open the mag up to a whole new audience, especially as their must be HHC/Vibe etc. fans looking for something to read on the toilet/bus.
― fruity gonzalo (a hoy hoy), Friday, 14 August 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)
pearl jam are releasing a record, and are over here touring at the moment?
― She's big on the mental illness scene (stevie), Saturday, 15 August 2009 12:08 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i heard a new Pearl Jam track yesterday.
― De Mysteriis Dom Passantino (jim), Saturday, 15 August 2009 12:21 (sixteen years ago)
Don't worry about it, a hoy hoy is even more out of touch than the NME ;)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 15 August 2009 12:37 (sixteen years ago)
There are many, many things to attack the NME about, but failing to cover Dizzee and Kanye is not really one of them.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 15 August 2009 13:21 (sixteen years ago)
Their Jonas Brothers coverage is shit, tho.
― James Joyce da 5'9 (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 15 August 2009 13:23 (sixteen years ago)
still don't accept the 'they should just focus on indie' argument really
― unban dictionary (blueski), Saturday, 15 August 2009 15:21 (sixteen years ago)
Agree, but when the NME closes it won't be because they got their direction wrong, it'll be because not enough people give a shit about buying a weekly music paper, covering any genre.
― Milijas Like That (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 15 August 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)
but then who would cover it? Next thing you will be suggesting Mixmag shouldnt do drug surveys!
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)
Did a hoy hoy actually buy the rag, or just stand in the newsagents for an hour? If the latter, that ain't helping.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 16:34 (sixteen years ago)
haha
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)
it only takes 5 mins to read even in a shop btw, so no wonder noone buys it
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 16:44 (sixteen years ago)
ok, what you reckon the result of the answer to this question will be?
Hey Mark, Please could you let me know your age and whether you are a regular reader of NME?
― Mark G, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 15:47 (fifteen years ago)
just say you read it every week
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago)
Naah, too late: Apparently the "over 30's" group is full!
― Mark G, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 18:09 (fifteen years ago)
you mean they're letting 2 over 30's in?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 18:10 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, one of them's Morrissey.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 18:11 (fifteen years ago)
