Somehow just found out about this. Have seen a few of these artists in clubs in NYC but haven't been to a fest like this for this type of music. Anyone think it will be any good?

Site says night ends at 11pm. Dying to see Luciano, but 11pm???

two years pass...

so no discussion about this past weekend's deaths and cancellation, huh?
I gotta assume this thing is done for. the parks dept is never gonna let them back in again.

yeah I was wondering that too. didn't see another thread with any talk about it. messed up situation all around.

I was surprised it was canceled. am I totally off base that that seems like an overreaction?

they had two deaths, a rash of related hospitalizations and no guarantee they could stem further calamity in a crowd that was 18+ in a public space policed by the city. if the mayor's office hadn't shut it down and more people had died the next day, it would've been national news. i think it was a good call and i say that as someone who had an outdoor show shut down this year by the mayor's office due to a potential thunderstorm... so i'm not always inclined to agree with the administration.

true enough. as it is I'm surprised it's not a bigger story. so did it not get much further than Twitter and the NYC papers? I guess I figured if it was front-page news in the tabs it was a big deal.

i would guess the event organizers did everything they could to tamp down the story and, given that a ton of majors were out to review, had a slot held for print and there WAS a show for the first two days, it was too fast to turn around a lot of journalism on what went wrong. Wouldn't be surprised to see feature length pieces in major sources in a few weeks tho'.

it was on the cover of the Post again today. surprisingly Bloomberg makes it sound like it will be back next year.

The annual Electric Zoo festival appears to be on track to return to Randall’s Island next year.

“We’ve been working with this promoter for the last five years and they have a stellar record,’’ Mayor Bloomberg told reporters yesterday.

“They . . . put in as good of procedures as we could think of and have been nothing but cooperative, and I have nothing but good things to say.”

that's amazing. trying to imagine what would happen if two people died of drug overdoses at rock the bells. i am imagining a lot of FOX NEWS SPECIAL REPORTS

And doesn't the media like to blame everything on the West Indian Caribbean Carnival parade that took place in Brooklyn on Monday, as well?

just got the following email from the head of flavorpill

Greetings all,

Last weekend two young people died at the Electric Zoo festival in NYC. As someone who's been immersed in the festival scene and made it my life's work to inspire people to participate in all types of cultural experiences, I believe that this all-too-familiar loss signifies an opportunity for our community to grow beyond our sometimes excessive, less-than-mindful behavior when we gather.

Such gatherings are fundamental to our human experience insofar as we can consume all the incredible things coming at us mindfully. Each one of us has the capacity to be joyful and ecstatically "in the moment" wherever we are, and it's my goal to create environments where we get to experience that capacity in its fullest.

I hope the events below offer you the opportunity to rock out with your badass amazing self in a safe environment with a supportive community.

Let's do this!

a little awkward but the capper is that the email subject was "Let's celebrate, together!"

i mean, it's well-intentioned and all but...

ecstatically

*wink*

that's more than a little awkward. pretty gross really. (also is the loss "all-too-familiar"? I can't really think of too many precedents for this situation. maybe they just meant losing someone to drugs or alcohol, in general.)

dmr, Thursday, 5 September 2013 20:44 (twelve years ago)

as per rebooking for 2014, i would guess that if there's more deaths at similar shows anywhere over the next year and if there's sufficient public tsk-tsking about this, the political capital at play will outweigh the considerable cash they pay the city. but if it's a nonissue next year, with a new mayor, who knows.

last night E News Daily was using it as a way to beat up Miley Cyrus for her Molly lyrics

(yeah I watch some shitty cable TV)

dmr, Thursday, 5 September 2013 20:50 (twelve years ago)

"all-too-familiar" in my mind is referring to the idea that everyone who is part of this scene knows somebody who fucked up their life or burned out or OD'd. i'm sorta peripheral to this world honestly but i'm close enough to a lot of promoters and old-timers to recognize that this is the second go-round for a lot of EDM types and late night party types in their thirties/early forties seem to have a tendency to look at casualties with a mix of sadness and resignation, like this is sort of bound to happen occasionally cause people are stupid.

Oh that Billboard article-- These deaths are bad because they are hurting corporate brand sponsorshop and the Wall Street value of the sponsors (whose CEOs might also read about the deaths)

curmudgeon, Saturday, 7 September 2013 14:28 (twelve years ago)

that's billboard

ten months pass...

The Wall Street Journal reports the safety measures at Electric Zoo this year are pretty all-encompassing. The new security measures will include drug-sniffing dogs stationed at every entrance, plainclothes security officers that specialize in narcotics, thorough patdowns, and more. "Amnesty bins" will be placed at the gates, where concertgoers can get rid of whatever they shouldn't be bringing in without punishment before going in. Oh, and to get in, concertgoers will need to watch an online anti-drug PSA delivered by electronic musicians in order to activate their wristbands. The new safety measures are coming in the wake of festival organizers Mike Bindra and Laura DePalma selling their promotion company, Made Events, to the conglomerate SFX Entertainment.

looks like fun
