Recommend good music 2000-2009 you think others may have forgotten about or never heard.

woodbine's self titled album. 'best before end' is quite good too.

Eyvind Kang - Virginal Co Ordinates

can au jus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

the top 10 thread has a lot of good stuff in it, but the title tends to force people to think too much about it. like, i have no idea yet what my "top 10" would be, but i know a lot of things i like. e.g, this is probably not top 10 material for me, but i think guitar romantic (the exploding hearts) deserves end-of-decade consideration. it was sort of overlooked and does what a lot of other people were trying to do at the time -- that garagey power-pop thing -- but better.

as a resident alt-country apologist and knoxville enthusiast, i'll rep for scott miller's first solo album -- no, the other scott miller -- which is great, start to finish, from neil youngian opener to gospel closer (and abundant power-pop nods in between its folky moments and fine springsteen pastiche).

Perfect opportunity to talk once again about the greatness of the self-titled Glands album from 2000. Youtube links to come.

another classic from Athens, GA

Moreno, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

I'm from Jersey.

I saw the Glands twice, once at Wetlands in NY to a crowd of 8 people, and again 2 years later at Maxwells in Hoboken, to maybe 20 people. You could tell by then that they were growing weary of their total obscurity. It's a shame because that record should have been huge.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

Another classic, unfairly ignored 2000s record, oddly enough another band that started in Athens...

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah they just kind of stopped after that album. i remember hearing rumors about a new album in the works, but nothing ever happened. dude seemed happy just running his record shop. (xpost)

Honestly all 3 of the Czars records figure somewhere in my top 20 of the decade:

Before...But Longer
The Ugly People Vs. the Beautiful People
Goodbye

Also, Cinerama's "Torino" and The Delgados "The Great Eastern"

g4y w1tch ab0rtion - Maverick

pretty sure the only people on here that will join me in repping for this are M@tt and J0hn D, but it's really, really great.

(sorry about the googleproofing, HI DERE and I have been playing mod substitution games and I'm afraid otherwise it will turn into a youtube for Lets Go All The Way by Sly Fox)

Maverick is a great album. DO wish the band had a better name.

Very obscure band with 3 great records. This is the debut. 2 girls, 2 casios, killer songs.

kshighway, Friday, 14 August 2009 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

That's such a fucking boring list. Apparently Panda Bear put out the best record of the decade! The Strokes at #2 is just fucking stupid. And I like Joanna Newsom, but Ys is far better than her debut.

kshighway, Friday, 14 August 2009 21:37 (sixteen years ago)

Someone's comment on the GVB post: "that's a great list. all essential listening. the fwd from carles pretty much makes it unbeatable"

kshighway, Friday, 14 August 2009 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

Alright, sorry for cluttering up this thread with this bullshit.

kshighway, Friday, 14 August 2009 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

Well, there's a lot of good discs on that list but, yeah, it's a bit . . . predictable/safe. OTOH, the heart wants what it wants.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 14 August 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

Another compelling list from a site called "betterPropaganda," which I just discovered courtesy of the GVB comments section, the locus of all good discussion on the internet:

http://betterpropaganda.com/content.aspx?id=976

LCD Soundsystem apparently put out the best record of the decade. Animal Collective, Radiohead chart multiple times. And Fleet Foxes are at #37!

For those of you who enjoy compelling music writing, check out the great blurbs that accompany each entry in the chart: "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a fucking mess compared to Wilco's previous efforts and this was precisely what made it so brilliant."

kshighway, Friday, 14 August 2009 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

Kind of surprised DJ /rupture's Gold Teeth Thief didn't get a mention on the other thread. No R&S stuff either.

Was much weaker, I thought (from what I heard of it). That disc didn't make a spash in the U.S., either. I totally think The Ocean or Born Under A Bad Sign would have fit in a top 500 songs of the decade list.

Okay, let's do some salsa singles and other songs, starting with a couple very pop ones. Most of these are really obvious, but if you don't pay attention to salsa you might not have heard them. In rough chronological order.

Son by Four - A Puro Dolor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piDrQeniV-s

(Yes, I do actually like that.)

Rey Ruiz - Desde Que No Estas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP4AKCEnHYM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1usbkfcoaD8

El Gran Combo - Me Libere

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5upjod1rgs

Jose Alberto - Quiero Salsa [can't find an acceptable copy--don't want live versions]

Truco & Zaperoko - La Anguila

Cesar “Pupy” Pedroso - El Vecino Se Mudo

Son de Cali - Ta Loca

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJd0hhZlpAc

Grupo Niche - Culebra

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHVc6HoyyEw

Celia Cruz - Yo Vivire (I Will Survive)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-djmPaG3vM

El Gran Combo - El Matrimonio

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwXLJhWRS94

Anthony Blea y Su Charanga - Virgen De La Caridad

Pupy y Los Que Son Son - Pupy El Buenagente [live version and not even w/ the same singer, but the band sounds pretty good]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SySRdnQmWM

Marc Anthony - Valio La Pena

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BBDlixk9wA

Cesar “Pupy” Pedroso - Del Trabajo A La Casa

Andy Montanez - Se le Ve

El Gran Combo - Arroz Con Habichuela

I hope this doesn't make the thread impossible unwieldy for people.

Jack, The End of the Way It's Always Been. Now, for me Jack will always be about 1996 and Pioneer Soundtracks, but I listened to this recently and... it's a little different. Dense, atmospheric, yet big sounding. Really works.

Also some shout-outs to some quality Scandi-pop: Emiliana Torrinni (Fisherman's Wife), El Perro Del Mar (s/t), and The Radio Dept. (Lesser Matters.
