Fake Modern Lovers Songs

Dunno if there are enough tunes here to make a mix, but itunes shuffle just played The Go-Betweens' "Karen" and The Feelies "Boy With Perpetual Nervousness" in a row, so I was wondering if y'all Ilxors might have some ideas for songs that are in the vein of/obviously inspired by the first Modern Lovers record ...

er...something from the first couple of BMX Bandits albums, like "Right Across The Street" maybe?

A bunch of Violent Femmes songs - Gimmee The Car, Kiss Off etc. Basically the whole of their first album.

yeah, violent femmes, definitely. Haven't heard the other stuff you guys have mentioned. Will have to check it out. Seems like there should be a Galaxie 500/Luna song that fits here, but I can't think of one that really sounds like the first Modern Lovers album.

The Rockingbirds number is a song about Jonathan Richman that homages the hell out of Roadrunner.

Here's the Pastels:

Galaxie 500 did that cover of Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste, didn't they?

everything, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

well, yeah, they did but it doesn't really sound much like the modern lovers really

"We're Gonna Be Friends" by The White Stripes

xpost - I'm not familiar with their stuff really. At least I used to be but I've forgotten most of it. How about "Hey" by the Pixies? I'm running out of suggestions here.

The Clinic steal both the Violent Femmes' vocals *and* a bunch of Modern Lovers keyboard lines for, well a lot of stuff, but especially Monkey On Your Back. Doesn't really sound like the Modern Lovers, but their influence is all over it.

The Real Kids - "All Kindsa Girls"
Both from Boston, with the RKs coming not too long after, from what I know.

I only recently worked out that the fade out of the Pistols' "EMI" is a direct nick off the fade for "Roadrunner (twice)"

Aw naw, no' Annoni oan an' aw noo (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 August 2009 12:49 (sixteen years ago)

xxxxpost re: the Real Kids -- if I'm not mistaken, the lead guy from that band was IN the Modern Lovers, at least at some point. Think he's on the Cambridge tracks from Precise Modern Lovers? Correct me if I'm wrong. But yeah, I don't know too much about them, but "All Kindsa Girls" is a great song.
