born to a family

iatee, Thursday, 13 August 2009 03:25 (sixteen years ago)

I'm finding it hard to choose between finding you & boundary rider

"Darlinghurst Nights"

tylerw, Thursday, 13 August 2009 03:31 (sixteen years ago)

There’s a boundary rider
at the five mile fence
bloodwood, bones and steers

Finding You

that's not my post, Thursday, 13 August 2009 05:03 (sixteen years ago)

"Finding You" is at once the most breezy, jangly and incredibly saddest song.

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 13 August 2009 10:05 (sixteen years ago)

Pato in non-quippy, poignant post shockah. Also otm.

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Thursday, 13 August 2009 10:21 (sixteen years ago)

here comes a city. and not only because i work in that city.

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 13 August 2009 12:23 (sixteen years ago)

I was initially disappointed with this album but - surprise! - after hearing some of it on the live "Striped Sunlight Sound" album, I came around. And so - "Darlinghurst Nights".

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 13 August 2009 13:54 (sixteen years ago)

This album is actually better than a couple released during their first phase, and it's certainly the best of their reunion albums.

Anatomy of a Morbius (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 August 2009 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

This album is actually better than a couple released during their first phase, and it's certainly the best of their reunion albums.

I must respectfully disagree. I thought the bang-charge of Sleater Kinney's backing on "Friends Of Rachel Worth" is better and the songs more memorable. While it's possible I'm biased due to the novelty of a new Go-Betweens album after many years, it's still the post-reunion album I go back to.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

No pox on Rachel Worth; it just sounds more like Forster/McLennan than Forster-McLennan. On Oceans Apart they're in an actual band.

Anatomy of a Morbius (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

"Darlinghurst Nights" and i agree w/G McBB--Rachel Worth is better.

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

I think Oceans Apart is the best reunion record, kinda for the same reasons Alfred says. But we can agree to disagree! "Darlinghurst Nights" is like everything I love about Robert Forster compiled into one song.

tylerw, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

This is fucking impossible.

Matos W.K., Thursday, 13 August 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

i am a little baffled by this darlinghurst love. it is not a bad song by all means but it is a little bit of a boring ballad. a yawnfest missing the quirky, mercurial side of the go-betweens completely. very settled and mature. the end when it has something of a free-flowing jazz improvisation is better. but still. the statue is a great melancholic mclennan song btw.

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 13 August 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

yes, all those specific details and emotions of "Darlinghurst" are really unmercurial and sedate.

Matos W.K., Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

a yawnfest missing the quirky, mercurial side
lol what?

tylerw, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

I opened a notebook, it read The Darlinghurst Years
I snapped it shut but out jumped some tears
I didn't have to read it, it all came back
Dragging my fingers through my hair
Hiding behind her back

Gut rot cappuccino, gut rot spaghetti
Gut rot rock'n'roll through the eyes of Frank Brunetti
And always the traffic, always the lights
Joe played the cello through those
Darlinghurst Nights

One more coffee and I must go
Back to my room more chapters to go
We'll meet up in an alley with more places I know

I'm going to change my appearance everyday
I'm going to write a movie and then I'm going to star
in a play
I'm going to go to Caracas because you know I'm
just going to have to get away

Marjorie and Kim, Andy and Clint, Debbie, Bertie, people came and went
And then there was Suzie who we never ever saw again

And always the traffic always the lights
Climbing that hill star studded nights
Joe played the cello

tylerw, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, that's what I love (on ONE of the things I love) about the Go-betweens right there -- a perfect depiction of how memories creep up on you, how you're always living with your past even if you don't realize it.

tylerw, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

"or ONE" is what I meant

tylerw, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

im gonna put my head on the chopping block and admit that this is my fave go betweens album

Michael B, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

i was thinking about the music, i didn't listen to the words.

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

well, sure, "Darlinghurst" is pretty straightforward musically ... this whole album is that way, isn't it?

tylerw, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

hot diggity, nice poll idea! haven't heard this in a few months but taking "Lavendar" this time. they were so fuh-reaking sublime on this tour (my one GOB's show).

outdoor_miner, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

I finally said to hell with it and voted "No Reason to Cry."

Matos W.K., Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

"Darlinghurst Nights" is still the best song about Darlinghurst (Paul Kelly's "Darling, It Hurts" is just rubbish).

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

im gonna put my head on the chopping block and admit that this is my fave go betweens album

Hey, often I think so too!

Also: alex is RONG about "Darlinghurst Nights." The whole point of the song is how the Go-Be's find a musical correlative for how the meditation gives way to a flood of memories.

Anatomy of a Morbius (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 August 2009 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

i picked 'lavender' but it could have been any of them except 'the statue'. love the clockwork reggae and the line 'shes got tasmania...in her head'.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 2 January 2021 02:19 (five years ago)

What about it?

Dog Heavy Manners (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 2 January 2021 02:19 (five years ago)

It's great...sounds like shit, but thankfully it's getting remastered for the next box set.

birdistheword, Saturday, 2 January 2021 08:53 (five years ago)

Oh *that*'s good news.

piscesx, Saturday, 2 January 2021 14:01 (five years ago)

I've just ordered the DVD of the film because it's not any streaming places; anyone seen it? I'm sure i've asked this on a different thread.

piscesx, Saturday, 2 January 2021 14:04 (five years ago)

the documentary? I streamed it on Amazon Prime on Thursday. $3.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 2 January 2021 14:13 (five years ago)

I ended up ordering the DVD. No regrets as I've watched it a ridiculous number of times by now.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 2 January 2021 14:18 (five years ago)

Also, let's pretend I noticed this poll at the time such that there's a '1' against "The Mountains Near Dellray".

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 2 January 2021 14:31 (five years ago)

Damn yeah it's not streaming on Amazon in the UK.

piscesx, Saturday, 2 January 2021 14:43 (five years ago)

Surprised it's not on any of the rando sites, like Kanopy or Hoopla or Tubi. Took me a while before I was able to stream the excellent Chills doc anywhere, but I'd happily pay $3 to stream this.
