I love that it's Judgment Day, Vol. 1. The punishment will continue!
Great Ali albums more people should hear:
Charles Gayle/William Parker/Rashied Ali, Touchin' On Trane (his final gig was with this band, apparently, at Newport last weekend)Louie Belogenis/Wilber Morris/Rashied Ali, Live At TonicAssif Tsahar/Peter Kowald/Rashied Ali, Deals, Ideas and Ideals

Not the best album by any means, but still one I enjoy. Really love Ali & Fred Hopkins on this:

So sad. I met him once and he was a gracious, funny man. My hero.

Think this was maybe the first time I heard Rashied Ali play. Jim Sauter, Rudolph Grey, Alan Licht and Rashied Ali, all cooking up a hell of a racket that just kept on driving way the fuck out there into the blue. Maybe I'll have to blast this one tonight.

― sonderangerbot, Friday, 14 August 2009 10:56 (sixteen years ago)
Holy shit, another good man down. 2009 = the year the music died. I can't say enough about Rashied, other than that Interstellar Space is one of my alltime top ten recordings, and that there are times when I'd swear that he was a better Coltrane accompanist than Elvin Jones, even. So glad I saw him in Toronto in '95, backing Charles Gayle.
(I second the Frank Lowe collab, as well as THIS:

There you go, NickB)

Thanks MVB, but I can't see that either! Something funny going on w/ images. It was Mask of Light anyhow.

I'd swear that he was a better Coltrane accompanist than Elvin Jones, even
Coltrane himself would probably agree with that

Can anyone with a better knowledge of US city skylines tell me where that Judgment Day cover pic is of?
― sonofstan, Friday, 14 August 2009 14:33 (sixteen years ago)
one thing i will never understand. what is the point of posting RIP on a thread about someone who has died? people who are dead are where they are. why should they rest in peace? what is this bullshit idea? i'd prefer them to haunt us as long as possible. RIP is an offense against the dead. they are still there. christians believe in the soul who never dies. i am no true christian but i believe that the soul of a dead person lives on. rashied ali should definitely not rest in peace. he will drum on my stereo for the next 30 years. meditations forever.

On ITunes there's an edition of the Radio3 'Jazz Library' Podcast about RA, which has excerpts from an interview with the man. A bit brief but a nice listen nevertheless and free too.
