Flashing Breasts At Concerts: When did people stop doing this?

This is not a thread about patriarchal ramifications or classic/dud status. It's simple social history stuff, so let's try not to devolve it into arguments.

A story:

The second concert I attended was Helmet in Tampa in 1995 and a girl next to me stood on her boyfriend's shoulders and flashed her breasts at Page Hamilton. In the following 14 years of attending shows, I've never seen this again.

Now this was de riguer in the 1980s if I am to believe music videos. I've seen artists ASK to see breasts as if it were a common occurance at concerts (Ozzy in Tampa in 2001, Ludacris in Gainesville in 2000), but no one ever complied.

Older posters: When was the moment this became passe? And why? When was the last time you have witnessed this activity? I would think this would be something that Cobain and Co. would have killed, but Woodstock 94 was very flash-heavy iirc.

I tend to associate breast flashing with hair metal, so "Cobain kills hair metal, also kills breast flashing" works for me.

Master John of Scotland, alias Scotus (snoball), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think i've ever seen this at a show :'(

tylerw, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

the dr dre 2001 tour video i saw had girls doing this. so im guessing they never stopped. unless something major has happened in the last 8 years.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:05 (sixteen years ago)

I still do this.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

so basically, women still do this at hip hop shows, but not at shows for arcade fire. for kid rock maybe?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

actually this has happened when i was playing in the band, but it was more awkward than exciting.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

a quick flickr search shows that this tradition is alive and kicking at Motley Crue gigs.

Saw this between the Metallica and Guns n Roses sets at the Superdome in 92 ... the infamous "breast cam." As described here.

x-postsss Yeah, Zia plays topless a lot. I've seen lady musicians do this but not actual audience members.

that Juggalo festival is keeping the boob-flash flag flying high tho.

Yeah if WW really wants to see boobs at a concert he really does need to go to The Gathering next year.

ENBB, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

I remember going to see the Rollins Band at the old Marquee on 21st street in 1991. The opening band was the mighty Lunachicks and halfway into their set, there was a major scuffle in the crowd. A bunch of skinheads came charging past me holding this long haired, freaky guy by the scalp. The `Chicks were summarily very appreciative, as apparently this dude had been waving his cock around at them for the entirety of their performance.

I later learned that the unfortunate gent in question was Dino Sex ... the infamous drummer for GG Allin & the Murder Junkies.

xpost: two women got up on stage naked on the first Pere Ubu reunion tour date in Edinburgh. Thomas looked appalled. It must have become a tradition.

Soukesian, Friday, 14 August 2009 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

I recall this at Ozzy shows in the 90s.

Also, I flash my bare chest when my friends are playing to distract them.

That Oasis live album, possibly?

(not much of a story, someone did, Liam went wor, cameras picked her out...)

Mike Skinner was getting girls to bare their breasts when I saw The Streets a few years ago.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 14 August 2009 10:02 (sixteen years ago)

At the Ricardo Villalobos/Zip show at Mutek this year, a girl threw her bra on stage at Villalobos, and flashed him quite intentionally putting it back on after he (like the kind gentleman that he is) made sure it was returned to her.

I never thought I'd see breast flashing at a mnml show.

Saw boobs on various warped tours. On the other hand, one time a teenage boy flashed his junk at the singer for Save Ferris. She wasn't that shocked.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 14 August 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

But to answer the main question, I imagine the fall in flashing is directly tied with the rise of cell phone cameras.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 14 August 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

I think the more pertinent question is: What can we do to bring this fad back?

Nate Carson, Friday, 14 August 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

In 1999 I saw flashing at the Metallica show in St. Pete.

I thought this still happened a lot at metal festivals. Well it does if Download Festival is anything to go by: watched the streaming live footage of that and some bird kept getting her boobies out during Korn and Faith no More.

From a Woodstock '99 review:

Two of the trademarks of Woodstock were already in full effect by the time Jamiroquai began his set - mudfights and topless women.

The mudfights had already begun, as there was a broken water main that someone managed to turn the water flow on to. Amidst the mudslinging, and Jamiroquai singing "You gotta get down", a wild-eyed teenage boy had one question - "Where's the speed?"

Meanwhile Jamiroquai is rocking Woodstock with his own personal style of funk - freestyling his lyrics during "Traveling Without Moving" to include a repetition of the chant for "more breasts" and including a comment that "American breasts are the best breasts... thank God for American breasts."

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 15 August 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

Not breast flashing, but at Springsteen's recent Vienna concert a girl near the front got up on someone's shoulders and took her T-shirt off – she had a bra on. It was shown on the big screen that the shirt had "JERSEY GIRL" written on it, so this was basically a ruse to get Springsteen to play her request (which he did, of course).

AC/DC, 2000. It seems they have a longstanding ritual of using a particular song (I forget which one) to focus on women flashing their breasts, and featuring them on the giant video screens. Has anyone seen their current tour? Do they still do it?

I imagine the fall in flashing

I misread this as a reference to someone flashing The Fall, which would probably be an event

Yes, they do, during "The Jack," but when I saw them this past year in NYC and then in Dublin, nobody actually flashed; it was just all these thirtysomething or middle-aged Irish women looking vaguely embarrassed to be on the big screen.
