Montee - Isle Of Now: unabashed Scandinavian soft rock/yacht pop on Lindstrom's record label

And so this thread told the story of how the Pinefoxes and Geir Hongros of the world had their revenge by launching a pure 1980s soft rock album that sounds a bit like Toto, Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac and Don Henley right into the middle of hipster dance culture. Entirely predictably at this point in time, admittedly given nu-Balearic's methodical assault on notions of bad taste, but that didn't stop me feeling a little ashamed upon listening to this for the first time.

But, strangely, I can't stop listening to it - something about the cleanness of the production, guitars especially, mixed with that glossy Permanent Vacation-style approach to rhythm and, yes, the big melodic soft rock choruses. The title track is pretty representative and very enjoyable indeed.

Another way to think of it is self-conscious Scandinavian electro types taking Phoenix's 'Too Young' as the jump off point. But this is loads better than Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, to these ears.

I'm totally into this and have been big upping it to everyone I know for a couple months. I also hear a peter gabriel-esque world music slant, and all sorts of other soft white funk.

Matt, you may have discovered this already, but the album was mixed by (and many of the songs recorded by) Knut Sævik of Mungo Jet. It sounds fantastic.

this is growing on me in a major way

max, Monday, 17 August 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

title track is legendary

max, Monday, 17 August 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

matt can you maybe change/add "montee" w/ no accent to thread title? since searching montee w/ no accent doesnt bring this trhead up

max, Monday, 17 August 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

what's wrong with just searching "isle of now"
are you in a hurry for the random googlers max.
are you hungry?

I've had the title track for a few months, and liked it, yet still had no desire to listen to the rest of the album.

removing the accent for people who are ignorant of accents is wrong on many levels imo

sigh

max, Monday, 17 August 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

we removed the "ø" from the last lindstrøm thread

max, Monday, 17 August 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

doesn't make it right

'steen suicide (don't drive it) (s1ocki), Monday, 17 August 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

maybe there can be an easy fix to teh search system so it's like google's, which ignores accents for that very reason

'steen suicide (don't drive it) (s1ocki), Monday, 17 August 2009 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

He who uploads to Mediafire chooses not to include the accent. So wrong but so right. Thank you. It's going to be hard to turn off General Echo for this but I may have to.

this record is amazing but the compression is almost unbearable (at least for me). Hoping that it's a MP3/rip issue and the CD will get something approximating int'l availability at some point

I was wondering what had happened to Stromland- weren't they supposed to put out some Alf Emil Eik reissues a while back that never materialized?

I expected wrong about this. It sounds like indie pop to me.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 16 October 2009 09:40 (sixteen years ago)

Never when I first heard this did I imagine I'd listen to it as much as I have. The wide open chorus in the title track is incredible.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 October 2009 09:55 (sixteen years ago)

Also Max I've removed the accent now.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 October 2009 09:55 (sixteen years ago)

New single up: http://www.myspace.com/monteemusic

Seems a bit meandering but nice to hear new material nevertheless. I'm kind of surprised that they haven't gotten picked up for distro in the US, i mean if people were plumping so much for Phoenix don't see why this wouldn't do well
