from Pitchfork:
When Built to Spill frontman Doug Martsch talked to Pitchfork a couple of months back about the band's forthcoming LP There Is No Enemy, he said, "There might be some things that were influenced by soul music, but it all just sounds like Built to Spill guitar music. We play the music that we can naturally play."
At last month's Pitchfork Music Festival, the band cranked out transcendent guitar solo after transcendent guitar solo without ever changing their facial expressions. Built to Spill guitar music sure comes easy to these guys.
On October 6, There Is No Enemy, album number seven for this band, will see release on Warner Bros. That alarming, murky image above is the album cover, and we've got the tracklist below.
The band has a ton of North American shows coming up over the next few months. Their axe-blazing onstage presence is a sight to behold.
There Is No Enemy:

Oooh, I'm very much looking forward to this. Hopefully they come to Europe.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 07:01 (sixteen years ago)
Great cover. Will check it out to see if they've returned to Perfect/Secret form.
― ledge, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 08:33 (sixteen years ago)
Perfect and Secret aren't the same form though!
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 12:08 (sixteen years ago)
exciting, good cover
― I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)
xp, yeah, and Perfect was perfect. But Secret was still good.
― ledge, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:35 (sixteen years ago)
nice drawing, not crazy about the text
― Simon H., Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:42 (sixteen years ago)
weird, i haven't heard any Built To Spill records in their entirety since Keep It Like A Secret! Not sure what happened there -- I still like them, and have seen them play a couple times this decade, but their records started seeming inessential, I guess? maybe i just decided they would never top There's Nothing Wrong With Love and Perfect From Now On ...
― tylerw, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 16:04 (sixteen years ago)
^^^ this. (Reinforced by two listens to Ancient Melodies which left me thoroughly uninspired).
― discovery witch has "provide you are reciptives" (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)
cosign to both, i have no idea what they sound like after Keep It Like A Secret, but everything prior i fucking love
― ovum if you got 'em (gbx), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)
You In Reverse isn't bad. Far better from the dreadful Ancient Melodies. It's got 2 alltime BTS songs, Going Against Your Mind (8+ minutes) and Conventional Wisdom (6+) that would fit right in on Perfect From Now On.
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, I don't even mean it as a put-down or anything -- I love Built To Spill and have had great times at the shows I've been to in the last couple years. But I haven't been terribly inspired to seek out the new stuff. Anyone want to rep for the last one? Or the Doug Martsch solo record? ah xpost
― tylerw, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)
Ancient Melodies is not dreadful.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)
You In Reverse is pretty good too.
Agree with both of the above, disagree with the cover--it's a slight improvement over the last one, but just barely.
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 17:15 (sixteen years ago)
"fly around you pretty little miss" off ancient melodies was a nice little old school BTS "nothing wrong with love" era song
― dude, it's america, it happens all the time (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)
I like the solo record just because it feels enough different + a couple REALLY great songs (Offer / Gone). Anyway, more lively and engaged than the last two or three Built to Spill things.
p.s. that new cover is horrible! Surprised to read the positive comments
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)
I really like that cover!
― Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)
it seems to be a controversial cover!
― I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)
Sounds like poll time to me.
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)
Wait they're still on Warner Bros? How the fuck?!?
― Moreno, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)
Haven't they been on Warner Bros for the past two albums?
― Benjamin-, Sunday, 30 August 2009 04:00 (sixteen years ago)
Oh sorry, misread the previous post.
― Benjamin-, Sunday, 30 August 2009 04:12 (sixteen years ago)
Going Against Your Mind (8+ minutes) and Conventional Wisdom (6+) that would fit right in on Perfect From Now On.
The shorter a BTS song is, the less probability there is that I will want to stab myself. They're a band who never need even think of writing something over 4 minutes long.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 30 August 2009 17:27 (sixteen years ago)
Even though Perfect is their best album and every song on that is over four mins and the best one is over eight?
― ledge, Sunday, 30 August 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)
I mean at the risk of taking you too literally... only 19 of the 63 BtS tracks I have are under 4 mins.
― ledge, Sunday, 30 August 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)
To wit, I haven't really been a fan of much since There's Nothing Wrong With Love save a few select tracks here and there.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 30 August 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)
this cover would make good artwork for an old school magic card
― iatee, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:10 (sixteen years ago)
new song:http://pitchfork.com/news/36424-premiere-built-to-spill-hindsight/
slickier than ever but very nice.
― Zeno, Thursday, 10 September 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)
As a single, I like it. The slide, slightly country feel surprised me after the soul talk. Seems softer than I expected. "What about Canada / Why is it paradise?"

i don't remember an example of such a highly anticipated record ,that didnt leak (yet?!) a week before it's official release.
who is mike jones?
― Zeno, Monday, 28 September 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)
this has finally leaked, the weekend before it comes out.
― Bee OK, Friday, 2 October 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)
there is a metric fuckload of guitar overdubs on this record. Not necessarily a good thing.

that has more to do with cortez than with BTS

After one listen, it seems horribly sequeneced. All the good songs--and there are a bunch--are stuck towards the end.
― kornrulez6969, Saturday, 3 October 2009 12:48 (sixteen years ago)
i think it will be a grower
and what about canada dudes

morning comes in freight ships while you're sleeping
― kamerad, Saturday, 3 October 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)
it's a good record.
so it's slower and more "ballad" oreinted, and nothing interesting in terms of production, but so what?maybe it's because they've "matured".one shouldnt expect another Perfect From Now On from those guys i think, only just to keep up with what theyre doing - Doug Martsch is still a great songwriter, and there are a bunch of those. (not only towards the end)
― Zeno, Saturday, 3 October 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)
That would be a huge change from his usual MO if he's now BACKloading the best songs.
― We're gonna destroy their van, we're gonna destroy their faces (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 3 October 2009 23:00 (sixteen years ago)
The song Pat is quite enjoyable.
― kornrulez6969, Saturday, 3 October 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)
Get rid of "Good Ol' Boredom" and shuffle around the tracks a bit = way more enjoyable. Still, their best in a little while.
― Simon H., Sunday, 4 October 2009 16:39 (sixteen years ago)
Album sounds good so far
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)
really good lyrics sprinkled throughout
what happens here stays here'cause no one anywhere else gives a damn
― Simon H., Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago)
The only one I've ever owned is the Caustic Resin collaboration and I love it.
The band I was in back in '96 was on a comp with them--an unused track from Perfect From Now On sessions.
Never seen them live. They always sell out the Crystal Ballroom two nights in a row here, and the crowd looks really sketchy (indie/hippies).
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:02 (sixteen years ago)
is this doug martsch singing or shaggy from scooby doo?!

i think it beats out Dino Jr. and YLT for the best "mature" record from indie giants, but i wish they had gone and done something kinda crazy like the new Flaming Lips
― een, Sunday, 4 October 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)
also "what about Canada" is one of my favorite lyrics of the year
"Get rid of "Good Ol' Boredom"
whats wrong with this song?
there are others to get rid of,if any.
― Zeno, Sunday, 4 October 2009 23:37 (sixteen years ago)
songs to get rid of imo are O Yeah,Life's a dream and maybe Nowhere Lullaby.but i need a few more listens to be sure.
"i think it beats out Dino Jr. and YLT for the best "mature" record from indie giants"and wilco and sonic youth for that matter
― Zeno, Sunday, 4 October 2009 23:47 (sixteen years ago)
this album is really, really good. i didn't think Built to Spill had this in them.
