I am 18.40% cool.

"Because I Got High" is one of the 500 Greatest Songs Of The Decade so easily

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 August 2009 06:50 (sixteen years ago)

the first time i heard that on the radio they played it twice

can i ox (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 August 2009 06:52 (sixteen years ago)

Afroman's East Palmdale was the first, and only, place where I saw a teen carry a concealed gun into a department store. Ah yeaaah.

Cunga, Saturday, 22 August 2009 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

Milton Parker, great choices. "Lullaby (By-by-by)" from that Ute Lemper album would definitely be up there for me!

Turangalila, Saturday, 22 August 2009 07:02 (sixteen years ago)

This is just gonna be my top 10 songs of the decade and I'm still weighing that one up tbh

You are Rebels! You are all yankees (country matters), Saturday, 22 August 2009 09:25 (sixteen years ago)

A more interesting question would be my top 10 FROM that list. Here goes:

1) Battles - Atlas
2) Of Montreal - The Past Is A Grotesque Animal
3) Wilco - Handshake Drugs
4) The Twilight Sad - Cold Days From The Birdhouse
5) Wilco - Poor Places
6) Mclusky - To Hell With Good Intentions
7) Radiohead - Pyramid Song
8) M.O.P. - Ante Up
9) Pulp - Sunrise
10) The Beta Band - To You Alone

and one for luck

11) Jesu - Silver

None of these are choices I'd otherwise even consider. But they're good songs. N.B. I'm not so well-versed in chart R'n'B/hip-hop as I ought to be, so this is very much a personal list, not a definitive statement of quality

You are Rebels! You are all yankees (country matters), Saturday, 22 August 2009 09:40 (sixteen years ago)

glad you cleared that up

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 22 August 2009 09:49 (sixteen years ago)

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Saturday, 22 August 2009 09:51 (sixteen years ago)

I'll poll them and post the results to this thread :)

Fever Ray - Seven
Cee-Lo - Glockapella
Meshell Ndegeocello - Elliptical
Burnt Friedman & The Nu Dub Players - Fly Your Kite (Feat. Abi)
Sussan Deyhim - Nagara
AZ - The Essence (Feat. Nas)
Prince - Black Sweat
All Saints - Chick Fit (Kissy Sell Out's Excellent Adventure Remix)
Grace Jones - Williams' Blood
Pole - Raum 1 (Variation by Burnt Friedman)

As far as I know none of these artists are on the list (not even Fever Ray!), except for Cee-Lo.

Autechre, Pen Expers
Autechre, Surripere
Autechre, Altichyre

Scarface ft Jay-z and Beanie Sigel - Guess Who's Back
Jay-Z - Heart Of The City (Ain't No Love)
Aaaliyah - Loose Rap
Superpitcher - Heroin
Gabriel Ananda - Ihre Personliche Glucksmelodie
Junior Boys - Birthday
Junior Boys - Last Exit (Fennesz Remix)
Manic Street Preachers - So Why So Sad (Avalanches Remix)

Number None, Saturday, 22 August 2009 11:54 (sixteen years ago)

  • GhostFace, Walk Around
  • Iron & Wine, Bird Stealing Bread
  • Radiohead, There There
  • M.I.A., Amazon
  • Low, Silver Rider
  • New Pornographers, The Bleeding Heart Show
  • Beck, Strange Apparition
  • The Clientele, Losing Haringey
  • Gavin Bryars/Philip Jeck/Alter Ego, The Sinking Of The Titanic
  • William Basinski, The Disintegration Loop 1.1
And three, as LJ said, "for luck":

  • Alejandra + Aeron, I Don't Know
  • The Books, The Lemon of Pink
  • Calexico, The Crystal Frontier
I'm not sure the Bryars and Basinski works count as "songs"; they're more like a full-length orchestral and performance piece, respectively. But each would easily make my top 500.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 22 August 2009 12:12 (sixteen years ago)

God I love "Pen Expers"

Fetchboy, Saturday, 22 August 2009 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

And if I wanted only artists who didn't appear at all I'd replace six of the above with:

Ulrich Schnauss - On My Own
Sweet Female Attitude - Flowers (Sunship Remix)
Seelenluft - Manila
Secret Machines - The Road Leads Where It's Led
Joy Zipper - Christmas Song
De La Soul - Held Down

Gavin in Leeds, Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

Wow. I just scrolled that list--apparently Country Music didn't exist at all this decade. Unless it was Produced by Rick Rubin or Jack White. Not even a token Miranda Lambert track made it.

President Keyes, Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

Pitchfork doesn't review country music. I'm not surprised that no country music made its list.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

Pretty big editorial blindspot.

President Keyes, Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

The Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash selections should count, but I know what you mean..

billstevejim, Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

Metal was not represented all that well either.

billstevejim, Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

It does, sometimes. But the number of writers who are actually into it is pretty small, I'm guessing, thus ensuring that a country song would never make a collective list like this.

jaymc, Saturday, 22 August 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

"Gunpowder and Lead" is #90 on the 2007 list, but that's as close as i've ever seen

een, Saturday, 22 August 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

I guess you can't expect them to cover every genre. It's just weird that nearly every other publication--including stodgy-ass Rolling Stone, seems a lot more broad-minded than pitchfork about stuff outside their comfort zone. Maybe some of the P&J voters who listed Jamey Johnson or Lee Ann Womack only listened to those albums because people were raving about them and otherwise have superficial knowledge of Country, but at least they aren't as closed-off as it seems P4kers are.

x-post Johnny Cash and Loretta certainly count as Country, but if the only two R&B singles on a Best of the 00s list were by, say, Ray Charles & Al Green, it would be weird to say the least.

President Keyes, Saturday, 22 August 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

7. Nelly Furtado - Promiscuous

this is the single strangest omission imo.

iatee, Saturday, 22 August 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

juan maclean - happy house

just sayin, Saturday, 22 August 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

Family Affair - Mary J Blige
One Beat/Oh! - Sleater-Kinney
Off You - The Breeders
Meantime - The Futureheads
Eighties Fan - Camera Obscura
Mercury - Throwing Muses

I keep feeling like I've forgotten everything that I loved this decade. A lot of what I do remember is turning out to be woefully out of step w/ Pitchfork.

6. Iron & Wine - Upward over the mountain

Moka, I think this is the Iron & Wine song that did make the list. Around maybe No. 350?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 August 2009 01:34 (sixteen years ago)

Update: It was No. 300.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 August 2009 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

I thought "Kids" was a surprising omission.

(so you can ctrl+f the shit)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 August 2009 01:46 (sixteen years ago)

Not cool that "Galvanized" by the Chems didn't make it. That shit's in my top 20, and there wasn't even any room for it in their top 500?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 August 2009 01:52 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, that tune is definitely one of the best club anthems of the decade.

JT - Sexyback

This isn't in the top 500?! Really? Madness!

Tuomas, Sunday, 23 August 2009 08:37 (sixteen years ago)

johnny cash - hurt
dbt - outfit
bjork - who is it
scarface/geto boys - G code (can't believe this got left off)
devin the dude - doobie ashtray (why does pitchfork hate fun)

jerk store (hmmmm), Sunday, 23 August 2009 09:32 (sixteen years ago)

luda - area codes
dizzee - dream/learn
t.i. - live your life

jerk store (hmmmm), Sunday, 23 August 2009 09:44 (sixteen years ago)

This isn't in the top 500?! Really? Madness!

Yeah, there was room for crap like Wolf Eyes and Black Dice and High Places, but Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake and The Chemical Brothers/Q-Tip don't pass muster? Corny indie fuX0rism kills credibility once again.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 August 2009 09:50 (sixteen years ago)

how dare they vote for songs they like

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 23 August 2009 10:09 (sixteen years ago)

I guess the real question is whether or not the list was intended to be one that sort of encapsulates the decade itself or one that celebrates contributors' personal whims. I like probably 80% of what's here, but some of the omissions we've picked out so far seem particularly egregious.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 August 2009 10:18 (sixteen years ago)

The actual voting process kinda limits the relationship between intention and result.

Tim F, Sunday, 23 August 2009 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

i think the list is more lacking in Black Dice than JT tbh, neither of their best tracks are in it either

❊❁❄❆❇❃✴❈plaxico❈✴❃❇❆❄❁❊ (I know, right?), Sunday, 23 August 2009 11:48 (sixteen years ago)

Built to Spill - Conventional Wisdom
Drive-By Truckers - Women Without Whiskey
50 Foot Wave - Dog Days
That LCD Soundsystem song about how europe has magazines was much better than All My Friends or whatever
Taylor Swift - Forever & Always (just as awesome as Since U Been, imo)

Shakim O'Collier (kingkongvsgodzilla), Sunday, 23 August 2009 12:01 (sixteen years ago)

I still think it's a pretty terrific list. I've done enough of these polls for other titles to appreciate how glaring omissions can come about from things like vote-splitting (the Chems) and the occasional desire to avoid the obvious choice (Hurt), and lots of not-necessarily-guaranteed inclusions - Johnny Boy, Ladytron, Primal Scream - made me smile. Most of the songs I haven't heard are by the kind of US indie band I've spent the past decade diligently avoiding (I still don't know the difference between Wolf Eyes and Wolf Parade) but that's Pitchfork's bread-and-butter I suppose.

Hang on, did they really leave out Tweet's Oops (Oh My)? I take it all back. Fuck 'em.

OK, I'll check them out. I'm sure they are v different but without a few unjustified prejudices I'd end up trying to listen to everything.

Thanks. I think I can go back to ignoring them now, but not at all for the reasons I expected. I'm guessing this wasn't their "hit".

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Sunday, 23 August 2009 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

Dead hills was one of their big albums actually, it was on sub pop iirc

gotta say the only glaring omissions are crunk ("Get Low"/"Wait (The Whisper Song)" and Afroman. ignoring the rankings, it's a pretty good, comprehensive list of songs

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 23 August 2009 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

Afroman is not a glaring omission.

billstevejim, Sunday, 23 August 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure he was supposed to be on the original list

I think my first outrageously obnoxious ILM thread/post was about how no one could honestly like Wolf Eyes. Deep down they knew they were listening to bad music.

Cunga, Sunday, 23 August 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

I get all the Wolf bands confused. I know Wolf Parade are the ones with the video where the guy has four heads stacked, one-on-top-of-the-other, on the guy's shoulders. Also, they're the band where I get a 1,000 "WTF is wrong with you?" responses when I say I don't see the big deal about them.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 August 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)

clotpoll you like the valleys = you are a friend of mine.

Turangalila, Sunday, 23 August 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

kindof impossible not to love The Valleys, but it was the first Electrelane song I ever heard and its impossible for them to come close, Bells is pretty good imo.

It kills me that I have never seen wolf eyes live

Wolf Parade is the band with 2 amazingly brilliant albums. Wolf Eyes is the one that makes interesting noise. Guitar Wolf is good. There might have been another decent wolf band, but I'm pretty sure the rest are all boring.

billstevejim, Monday, 24 August 2009 15:00 (sixteen years ago)

lol is this where I mention Ulver

You are Rebels! You are all yankees (country matters), Monday, 24 August 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

t,everytime i've seen Wolf Eyes the show is overrun with noise bros who punch people and slam dance like idiots. also, they are fucking assholes. 'slicer' and 'dead hills' are still the best things they've ever done, imo.

my list:
- NNCK- Back to the Omind (I'd Rather Not Go)
- Old Time Relijun- Cold Water
- Luciano- Octogonal
- Rhythm & Sound- Poor People Must Work (or pretty much any of the R&S stuff)
- Ellen Allien & Apparat- Way Out
- Moodyman- The Thief that Stole My Sad Days (Ya Blessin Me) <--- (single came out in 99, reissued in 2000 and released on full-length that year, so it counts imo)
- the Mountain Goats- Against Pollution
- the Juan Maclean- Give Me Every Little Thing (Cajmere Remix)
- Kate Bush- A Coral Room (IF AERIAL DOESN'T MAKE THE TOP TEN ALBUMS THEN PITCHFORK CAN GO DIE FOR REALS)
- Julien Jabre- Swimming Places (Ingrosso Remix)

and a few more

- Faze Action- In the Trees (Carl Craig Remix)
- Lil Jon feat. Sean Paul etc- Snap Yo Fingers
- Nomadico- Tazumal
- Underground Resistance- Inspiration *or* Transition
- Undeground Resistance- Millenium to Millenium
- Ricardo Villalobos- Miami

i could go on and on..

I want to know what "Crunk" is. I want you to show me. (the table is the table), Monday, 24 August 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

"Snap Yo Fingers" is a car-dancing classic.

Merzbox and whale songs (The Reverend), Monday, 24 August 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)
