I was going to poll this! I'm not a huge fan of it but it's very much a period artifact. I'll go with Weezer, though the temptation for a lol vote for Counting Crows is very strong.

afternoon "delight" (Euler), Saturday, 22 August 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

Haha, that Counting Crows is probably the best song on the disc, if not the band's best song!

But I voted for The Posies.

When the Counting Crows song started getting heavy play on my local alt.rock station, I knew the times they were a-changin'.

afternoon "delight" (Euler), Saturday, 22 August 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

Voting Counting Crows.

xhuxk, Saturday, 22 August 2009 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

posies...

'dude, hydroponic uterus' (stevie), Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

someone should poll no alternative next

fleetwood (max), Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

this is a strangely good CD.

billstevejim, Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

what's the sample in the sloan track?

billstevejim, Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

"Pay To Play" is such a bummer Nirvana choice considering what could have been used instead.

billstevejim, Saturday, 22 August 2009 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

no alternative is an infinitely better comp, IMHO

'dude, hydroponic uterus' (stevie), Saturday, 22 August 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

Grunge Couple is a fun song, but I have to go with The Sundays here.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 22 August 2009 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

Really liked the weezer and teenage fanclub songs back in the day

teabaggers, birthers, flat-earthers (will), Saturday, 22 August 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

"Open Every Window" was the song (or really one of several compilation tracks) that got me into the Posies, who I love. Still a great great song imo.

batch-posting microscope-toting joyless rock critic motherfucker (some dude), Saturday, 22 August 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

the weezer track was from their demos that they recorded at the studio next to the radio station i worked at, i HATED them so much ugh. now they're whatevz but back then it was pure cogdiss.

I'm gonna vote for Bogusflow because no one has mentioned it yet.. and I always loved the lyrics.. and the part when he starts crackin up towards the end.

billstevejim, Monday, 24 August 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

no alternative has almost nothing to do with this, but whatever.. and there are some terrible songs on it..

i like the weezer story, except i'm not sure if you mean you hated them as people or hated their music, but it's still good.

billstevejim, Monday, 24 August 2009 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

first three tracks are the best

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 August 2009 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

though sloan's eric's trip cover is nice too

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 August 2009 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

Counting Crows.

good showing for the Posies here. pretty sad that Nirvana won by default w/ some boring alternate version that showed how arbitrary their lyrics were, though.

snrubber soul (some dude), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think this proves how "arbitrary" their lyrics are. Weezer totally should have walked this though.

3 mods 1 banhammer (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

it's called a "demo"... featuring "placeholder" lyrics. amazing isn't it?

*⁂((✪⥎✪))⁂* (Steve Shasta), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

i am shocked that Bogusflow didn't get more votes. one of my favorite beck songs, hands fucking down.

excitement level......zero.

i dunno, maybe it's because that was my favorite when this came out, so i remember all the lyrics, etc.

my bach penises and their contrapuntal technique (the table is the table), Monday, 31 August 2009 01:01 (sixteen years ago)

if the final chorus lyrics are as perfunctory and unrelated to the verses as the placeholder chorus lyrics i think that says something, yeah.

snrubber soul (some dude), Monday, 31 August 2009 01:05 (sixteen years ago)

dude, it's nirvana. what did you expect?

*⁂((✪⥎✪))⁂* (Steve Shasta), Monday, 31 August 2009 01:17 (sixteen years ago)

Totally missed this poll, but I still pull out this CD from time and time for a good nostalgia trip (I must have sold back or lost No Alternative a long time ago.) "Don't Tell Your Mother" is perhaps the best song The Smiths never wrote. And I nearly chose "Bogusflow" as my registered ILX username.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 31 August 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

Can't believe I missed this: this comp is one of about a half-dozen that fit into my life like a formative teen-years favorite album. It keeps fascinating me lately how back pre-internet it made sense to buy and fall in love with lots of compilations, just to be able to hear as many bands as possible per dollar spent -- hell, I used to buy people's old mix tapes out of 99-cent used-cassette bins just to maximize the amount of stuff I could hear -- so you can wind up with a formative soft spot for, like, free-giveaway label samplers and the like. Which is nearly impossible to imagine now, apart from maybe some soundtracks working similarly. I think I'd probably have voted for the Sundays song on this one, since that's the main reason I got it, but "Jamie" is probably my favorite Weezer song, so there's that. (Also I wish "Grunge Couple" had gotten a vote.)

nabisco, Monday, 31 August 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

hey bisco dude i take it you have all of these too?

some dude, Monday, 31 August 2009 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

No, never got those!

Ha, I'm currently trying to find a track listing for the DGC "Rah Rah Sis Boom SWAG" comp

nabisco, Monday, 31 August 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

(NB I thought someone once started a thread on Lookout!'s "Heide Sez" comp, but I can't find any such thing)

nabisco, Monday, 31 August 2009 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

I have the first Buy-Product somewhere.

Nabisco also reminds me of all the CMJ discs I have in a binder somewhere. Some real treasures on those discs amongst the crap. "Little Dudes" by Pee Shy jumps immediately to mind.

3 mods 1 banhammer (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 31 August 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

oh god i have so many CMJ comps too. basically i started reliving this stuff recently when i bought a new CD shelf and alphabetized everything, then just kinda gave up on all the label comps and threw them in a pile on the bottom shelf.

http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/lp/comp55b.jpg

^^ I can't entirely make this out but I'm pretty sure I'm remembering: Jawbreaker ("Save Your Generation"), Boss Hog, Southern Culture on the Skids ("Soul City"), that dog., Elastica ("Spastica"), GZA, Urge Overkill, Pell Mell, Loud Lucy ("Ticking"), Sonic Youth ("Becuz"), Ann Magnuson ("Miss Pussy Pants"), Teenage Fanclub ("Don't Look Back") ...

xpost - haha my bottom-shelf crap pile includes a GRASS sampler including a bunch of old Wrens tracks -- I was surprised as hell when those guys came back; it'd be like if Loud Lucy suddenly got a Pitchfork Best New Music

nabisco, Monday, 31 August 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

haha was it "Grass of '96"!? i loved the New Radiant Storm King songs on there

tweedle dee and tweedle (some dude), Monday, 31 August 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

ha, yes, I think I purchased that one based on New Radiant Storm King love.

nabisco, Monday, 31 August 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

NRSK were one of those bands i decided i loved almost entirely on compilation appearances and 7"s, then kinda lost my enthusiasm right around the time i finally found an album by them

A Slice of Lemon (Kill Rock Stars/Lookout comp) poll

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 31 August 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

It's funny looking back on this time. Everyone trying so hard to be jaded, disaffected, and cynical but coming off in hindsight like bright-eyed and bushy-tailed babes in the woods. Or maybe I'm just talking about me.

Brio, Monday, 31 August 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

No, I think you're correct -- it's an era that somehow went down in history as a peak of irony and cynicism but looks, in retrospect, incredibly earnest and idealistic

nabisco, Monday, 31 August 2009 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

earnestly ironic and idealistally cynical 90's indie rock r.i.p.
