I have a friend for whom this is a sticking point in a song, at least when it's used to refer to someone who's not the referrer's mother, and so I've become more conscious of it as a result. It's prevalent in lots of classic rock, e.g. "Black Dog", "Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo", etc.

It works for me here, even if it's aimed at Sharon "Digital Bitch" Osbourne.

Like "Mama", which just reminds me of someone who rides on the back of a motorcycle. However, I don't like "Mami" as used in rap music.

I can't stand songs where a woman refers to her man as "Daddy" (for example Christine McVie's "Oh Daddy").

I think that I don't like the latter two out of a feeling that the -y or -i suffix sort of infantilizes the speaker/singer more and people who self-infantilize creep me the hell out. I don't know exactly why "Mama" gets a pass, but it sounds tougher to me.

Weezer "Across The Sea" he sings "it's all your fault mama" and I initially assumed this was a song about his mother since I wasn't paying attention to the lyrics.

I can't stand songs where a woman refers to her man as "Daddy" (for example Christine McVie's "Oh Daddy").

Can I just say that that RnB song on the radio now where the woman sings, "Daaaddy, can you be my daaaddy" is the creepiest, most off-putting thing ever?

I think "Black Water" by the Doobie Brothers is the one that most infuriates my friend.

Tim Buckley sometimes ad-libs with "ooh momma" and it usually makes me cringe a little. Not that it makes me love Buckley any less...

look out mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river.

Given the context, he's actually referring to his mother here.

I love the "momma"s in "Juanita" by the Flying Burrito Brothers, but reading over the lyrics I guess it's ambiguous as to whether it's his mother or another woman.
