What`s "pinheads on the move" like? I`ve seen it going for cheap at a local record shop..but can`t find a review anywhere. the fact that its from 1987 is putting me off.. not too keen on the sound of nascent digital technology.. Help me out pleez.

Is this the Tuxedomoon that's connected with Severed Heads? If so, I would buy it regardless of what it sounds like. (I haven't heard it, but the SH connection is enough for me.)

Dan Perry, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I refuse to invest in their work unless Sophie Ellix-Bextor has participated in it at some point.

Sophie #1 Phan, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't believe theres a severed heads connection dan, i thought they were more linked to all the current 93/death in june mob?

gareth, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they did something with Severed Heads that involved sampling the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Have Napster/WinMX/KaZaA been lying to me all this time??? (Don't answer that.)

Dan Perry, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

no, you're probably right dan, i couldn't say with any confidence

gareth, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

haven't thay got something to do with DJ Hell/international DJ gigolos, i know he's done some remixes that are pretty sleazy..

jk, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they were a bunch of san francisco art students who moved to belgium or something. 1987 would not have been their prime, but the nascent analog stuff they did in the very early 80's is pretty interesting.

Kris, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

tuxedomoon have nothing to do with severed heads or current 93.

they are / were a san francisco band who were originally on ralph records and then on the belgian crammed label. dj hell licensed one of their early 80's albums and had remixes done of their absolutely classic 'no tears'.

stirmonster, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

beat me to the punch kris.

stirmonster, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't they also do the song "Heaven" from Lynch's Eraserhead (1977)? I have one of their early LPs, but I don't remember much about it.

nickn, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The two Ralph Records albums (Half Mute and Desire) are much slept- on, intermittently avant pop with synths. After they left Ralph, they became more of a synth-pop band--not that there's anything wrong with that, necessarily--and became vastly less interesting. Cheap is probably too dear.

Lee G, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry--that should read "intermittently brilliant avant pop."

Lee G, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

hi Lee G

they were a synth pop band when they started and the Pinheads on the move (from 78) is a fine exemple of that after moving to Europe they actualy got more "classical" something that was already showing in their 2nd lp for Ralph(Desire) they did an album for a ballet choreographed by the well known french Maurice Bejert, as well as a double 12" on the italian expanded label which was more on the modern classical tip, then they got picked up by Les Disque Du Crepescule(sp) and did 3 12" for them(the Cage was my fave) in 85 the violin player(Blaine Reninger) left to persue his own career and the band picked up an acordion player as a replacement, subsequent works were not on the same level(imo) they were especialy good live(and there were around 20 live tapes of theirs floating around in the 80's also worth mention is the fact that they have worked with Gareth Jones (who also produced Ultravox), and the italian guy who was known as Robotnick(Problems Damour)

absolutely classic 'no tears'

I'll second that. I am intereted in hearing some of the solo projects from former Tuxedo Moon people, but it hasn't been high priority.

DeRayMi, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ltm is reissuing all of it, tuxedomoon and the solo stuff. also reissuing cath carrol.

keith, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I'm reviving this to get some information about their track 'Some Guys', which appears on the Wings of Desire s/t. I hated it for years, but suddenly this morning something clicked.
Which period is that track from? Is it fairly representative?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it's from the album 'holy wars', which you should check out if you like that track. (the album never clicked for me.)

the best: 'half mute' and 'desire' albums. search the CDs that tack on the 'scream with a view' and 'no tears' eps. 'pinheads on the move' compiles early tracks, many of which are quite good, some not so good.

solo projects: all the peter principle solo albums have moments, my all time favorite is the steven brown / benjamin lew album 'Douzieme Journee: Le Verbe, La Parure, L'Amour'. primitive, obscure, alien fourth-world instrumentals, scares the hell out of anyone I play it for. it's unidentifiable.

jl (Jon L), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks! I'll probably start with their two classics then, although I might have a hard time hunting them down..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 18 September 2003 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I never heard that there was a connection with Severed heads, but was there one with John Foxx? There was briefly a shared sound or aesthetic, especially around the 1982, Metamatic-era John Foxx. This was the Tuxedomoon that blew my mind when I heard their stuff on the radio.

Just received Holy Wars, Half Mute and Ghost Sonata. I've only listened to the latter, which is fantastic. All instrumental, alternating between electro-acoustic stuff and violin/piano neo-classical.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ghost Sonata looks like something I should get, since I like their sound, except for the vocals.

A new album is coming out next month!!
I can't remember the last time I've been so excited about a new release. Reunion records being what they are, I'm probably exposing myself to the risk of some major disappointment, but what the hell..

I'm probably the only one interested in this, but the new album is now scheduled for 25 May. Excerpts can be heard on www.crammed.be

I bought quite a few solo TX albums these last weeks, a couple of Steven Brown and Baline Reinger's Night Air, which upon first listen seems pretty dated.

Here I go again.. The new album is out. First listens leave me a bit cold. Much texture but no discernible tunes.
Has anyone else heard it?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

no, but I've been curious. sound samples weren't encouraging though.

some of the later textural albums worked for me, but not all of them. I liked 'ship of fools' but not 'holy wars' or 'you'.

you have the peter principle solos?

(Jon L), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago)

nope, heards bits and pieces on comps only.

The new one is def. more 'chilled' than anything they've done before. Could be a pleasant background summer album. Maybe it'll grow on me

Pitchfork reporting on their new release shockah!

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Monday, 12 June 2006 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

I highly recommend the Peter Principle solo discs, and anything Blaine Reininger does where he doesn't open his mouth. Colorado Suite especially.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Reininger's frist two solo lps, 'broken fingers' and 'night air' are pretty good (and he does open his mouth...). 'Windy Outside' and 'Broken Fingers' (the song) are essential listening for any tuxmo fan.
This miht be a good time to recommend Tuxedomoon's new CD 'Bardo Hotel', all instrumental "imaginary soundtrack". It's pretty much improvised but flows very well.

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

They're still quite popular here in Italy - at least among 40-something Eighties aficionados. After all, this is always the country where the original line-up of Chrome performed their only non-US concert.

Funny this came up, I was listening to Reininger's Elektra/Radio Moscow soundtracks earlier today.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

what are they like?

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Enjoyable! Which sounds flippant but without having seen the play or the movie they were for suggested what they were designed for -- crushing classic Greek tragedy on the one hand via electronics and violin, formal 'Russian' sounding classical orchestrations on the other.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

his new sample collage record Glossolalia looks interesting

And funnily enough Mr. Reininger himself just wrote me a nice little note thanking me for my various reviewing efforts -- Winston Tong did the same thing last year!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

where di you post those review, Ned?

All TuxMo fans are in for a treat this year with the release of a box set, including their new album, a CD of rarities and a DVD of various performances.

The usual location. (I'm not being flippant -- it's the usual spot! AMG.)

No idea where to post this but I just finished When Can I Fly?, Michael Belfer's deeply informative history of The Sleepers/TuxedoMoon from the inside.

Michael passed away last year so it was a bittersweet read, but worth it if you are keen on early SF punk.
