Wearing a bit thin, I know. Obviously their prime was long since gone at this stage.

But some nice tracks anyway. I guess "Mama" will win, but I choose the fan favourite and vote for "Home By The Sea".

I've always liked "Taking It All Too Hard" for reasons I can't fully explain; the chorus has a tug.

As the child of immigrants, "Illegal Alien" always had special meaning to me.

Nice to see you made Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea into one track there, Geir.

I remember Rutherford being interviewed when this came out saying that "we don't do ten minute tracks anymore". He was right - they didn't; they wrote a 12 minute track and split the thing in the middle.

It's a close thing between Home By The Sea and Mama for me. When I first heard Mama I was psyched up for a whole album of that quality and what I got was pretty substandard except for Home By The Sea and Mama, although I have a soft spot for Silver Rainbow.

Nah, it's gotta be Home By The Sea. I prefer the live versions, but this will do.

Guilty_Boksen, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 12:20 (sixteen years ago)

This one's probably my least favorite album they made as a trio, but "That's All" is still fun to hear.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

I was going to say that "Mama" was my least favourite Genesis single of all time...but then I remembered "I Can't Dance". Gotta go with "That's All", too.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

I wince when I think of Collins' voice (shriek) on some of those tracks.

That said, this album does bring back some nice memories of that summer (84?), so I can't come down on it too harshly.

Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

have a soft spot for some of the second side (silver rainbow, got to get better), but its got to be home by the sea for me, with the second half much better than the first...

teef hoit (stevie), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 13:25 (sixteen years ago)

This is the Genesis studio album I've played the most (though not in the past 20 years) and I'd call it one of my favourites (which really isn't saying much, but whatever.)

Gonna go with "Job To Do", tho something from Side One is bound to win.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

I love this album! Except 2nd "Home by the Sea." It's a tossup between the last two tracks, but I went with "It's Gonna Get Better," which sounds like heaven. That song seems to share a feel with certain other songs from '83, like Dylan's "Jokerman" and Cyndi Lauper's "When U Were Mine," that I can't quite put my finger on. They feel static, but have fluid basslines with sort of a shimmery overlay. Maybe it's just me.

Ashamed of myself for mistakenly placing "Silver Rainbow" on _Invisible Touch_ on another thread this week, happy to have the chance to make up for it by voting for it here. "2nd home by the sea" would have been tough competition if I could have voted for it alone.

Loved this album to death when it came out, now am struck by how much there is on it I don't want to hear again that much. Probably I'd listen to any of the other trio albums (always excepting "We Can't Dance") before this.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

OK, listened to this again and I think "Silver Rainbow" is a little better in my memory than in real life -- I mean, there's like a minute and a half of repeated chorus, no buildup, no modification of instrumentation, just a lot of same same. Would totally vote for "Second Home By The Sea" if it were on here as its own track.

"It's Gonna Get Better," on the other hand, is a lot better than I rememebered. Love this slithery keyboard.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

Saw them on this tour at the Richfield Coliseum in Ohio, but really, really gave up on them shortly thereafter. I do really like "That's All," but I HATE that guitar tone on the solos. Wish Rutherford would have chosen something different there. So I guess maybe "Taking It All Too Hard?" Sounds more like a Collins solo track, but does have something undefinable that a lot of the other songs here are missing.

"Illegal Alien" was and still is a fucking travesty, and everybody involved with it should be ashamed.

Id rather dig ditches than pull another dudes string (Pancakes Hackman), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

I always loved that Patrick Bateman's fave track from this album was "Illegal Alien." Nice little detail.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

After this is done can we POLL Three Sides Live so I can vote for "Paperlate"? No?

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 30 August 2009 00:28 (sixteen years ago)

I'm the opposite of Guayaquil: my memory undersells this record and I'm pleasantly surprised at how well it actually stands up and how different it sounds from each of the albums that bookend it. Always viewed Silver Rainbow and Just a Job to Do as filler, but they each have their moments. Voted for Taking It All Too Hard as a dark horse; could just as easily voted for It's Gonna Get Better.

Their 2007 reunion tour was the first time they got the Mama sound right live.

Gabble Ratchet, Sunday, 30 August 2009 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

To clarify -- my first "not as good as I remembered" post was based on looking at song titles -- the second, more postive post was after I played it. The truth is, apart from the generally moronic lyrics I even like the way "Illegal Alien" sounds.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 30 August 2009 01:46 (sixteen years ago)

And I too want a chance to vote for my beloved "Paperlate."

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 30 August 2009 02:57 (sixteen years ago)

"Paperlate" is OK (and nothing more), but live albums don't exist for me. :)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 30 August 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

But Geir! Only THREE of those sides are live!

(I didn't actually realize until looking it up yesterday that Three Sides Live was only released with a fourth studio side in North America and that the studio cuts were actually released as an EP elsewhere. So yeah, I realize why this wouldn't actually count as part studio, because it's only a quarter studio and only in a fraction of the world.)

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 30 August 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

But Geir! Only THREE of those sides are live!

Actually, the version available on CD is the version with no live content at all.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 30 August 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

No studio content at all I mean.
