I've never heard any of the Popes, etc. but I'm curious... any recs for a good place to start for later Shane? Anything to be avoided?

I have to admit "not worth checking out" was my impulse on this stuff for years (obv) but I'm willing to give it a shot now maybe. Is it all really bad?

love pogues.love shane. i think he's a truly great lyricist and singer.bought the first popes disc and meh. it's not terrible, but just no reason to really listen to it. might have good stuff later on, but the first one's just dull.

Same here, listened to the first album - it was just a bit dull. Nothing to match even the slightly sketchier final two Pogues albums. Although singing 'Her father was a right cvnt anyway' in his cover of Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway can sometimes raise a smile.

I figured as much. I've just been on a bit of a Pogues kick lately and was hoping maybe his lyrics & voice would withstand lackluster backing. Oh, well.

Concur, "The Snake" is solid. After that it gets dodgy.

Yeah, another vote for The Snake...I remember it being pretty good, if not quite as good as The Pogues proper (though it probably wins in a battle with the Shaneless version of The Pogues).

"The Snake" has moments. Worth checking out if you're not spending too much on it... didn't even know he had other albums, actually.

The Snake is awesome, "Victoria", "I'll Be Your Handbag", etc...didn't Johnny Depp cameo on this LP?
