Black Metal vs Death Metal

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

didn't know what to vote for in the other one, but this is trash for sure.

Ludooooo, thrash is met *twee* h's, potverdorie. Zoveelste keer!

Sorry. Voted dooooom.

Thijs, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

Doom easy. Like some thrash, love some doom.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ thijs, the others weren't spelling it right either, were they? ;)

Ludo, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

I love me some biker doom (St. Vitus, all the various Wino bands, Gates of Slumber) but stoner doom and funeral doom and especially frilly-shirt Euro doom all leave me cold, so thrash it is.

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

unsurprisingly it's doom for me

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

Thrash gets my vote, I'm still a sucker for that stuff after 25 years.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

If we're listening to cassettes, Coroner's Punishment for Decadence will crush all, but any other time, doom is it.

A severe accident, perhaps a dinosaur tragedy (CharlieS), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:55 (sixteen years ago)

i always found most thrash boring tbh. Plus I always hated those people who said metal had to be fast to be heavy or extreme.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

I always hated those people who said metal had to be fast to be heavy or extreme.

I don't think that's the case at all, but I still prefer thrash because it's got some loose ties to punk and mostly seems more unconcerned about skillz than some other subgenres. No slam on doom, though.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

The only nu-thrash band I've heard in years that I really like is Futur Skullz. myspace.com/futurskullz

I hear good doom all the time.

But yes I love Coroner too!

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

there's lots of decent nu-thrash out there, but it's also almost impossible to stand out. everyone is trying so hard to stay troo to that original bay area template. i definitely got a kick out of that latino cali explosion of underground thrash worship, but at the end of the day, have any of those dudes made anything better or more imaginative than the original bands that they ape? not really. every once in a while you get something like municipal waste or blood tsunami. if anything, i guess i should thank the new dudes for reminding me to listen to old stuff i'd forgotten about and for being somewhat responsible for some of the cool reissues that have swamped the market the last couple of years.

scott seward, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 01:12 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah there is no such thing as a new Ride the Lightning or Killing Technology or No More Color.

But the Futur Skullz takes on more of the Justice-era shit, with some unexpected twists and turns. Me likey.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 03:25 (sixteen years ago)

I don't feel like this is really true of thrash after the absolute inception of the genre... like Venom were an exception rather than a rule just a few years after Venom broke out

I love classic thrash, and I've tried listening to some of the newer thrash stuff, but I agree with this:

have any of those dudes made anything better or more imaginative than the original bands that they ape? not really. every once in a while you get something like municipal waste or blood tsunami. if anything, i guess i should thank the new dudes for reminding me to listen to old stuff i'd forgotten about and for being somewhat responsible for some of the cool reissues that have swamped the market the last couple of years.

On the other hand, it seems like I can count on doom to produce at least a few records a year that blow me away. Doom it is.

Highly trained BBQ chef (rockapads), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

doom will probably win but coroner owns pretty much any doom band I can think of unless you count sabbath. plus sarcofago, I mean like nobody's better than sarcofago. and voivod. and sodom. ratos de porao. I mean, to me, generic doom is probably better than generic thrash, but great thrash cleans the floor with great doom.

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 04:56 (sixteen years ago)

I don't remember what it was about Coroner I didn't like when I was huge thrash fan. Might be time for a thrash revival.

Highly trained BBQ chef (rockapads), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 05:13 (sixteen years ago)

j0hn sorry to be offtopic but did you s Sarcofago live in a basement in Brazil?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 12:11 (sixteen years ago)

doom is obviously the more loaded genre, cuz let's face it we're not exclusively talking about my dying bride, anathema and paradise lost here. we obviously have the likes of electric wizard, saint vitus and sunn (???) in check.

thrash nevertheless wins for me cuz as a genre it has produced so much astounding music it's not funny.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 12:28 (sixteen years ago)

no it's just a story

really appreciate it if my brothers in metal could pretend my day job as far as they know is yard help at the local golf course or something & not be dragging my real-life in ok, ilx is a fun escape from real life for me, thx

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

sorry j0hn. it was just something I read on another board having a go at you. I have no idea how it references your day job (unless its a line from one of your songs, which sorry i didnt know that!)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

no sweat H. it's a song line from a song called sarcofago live sung from the point of view of an audience member at a pre-first-demo show. I have never been to Brazil. I did see Celtic Frost on the Into The Pandemonium tour though. At Fender's. In Long Beach. Because I am awesome like that.

every metal person I talk to never stopped saying poseur which right is pronounced poser but in Cali we spelled it french style because one of the shops on melrose that stocked punk stuff was called poseur

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Thursday, 17 September 2009 01:25 (sixteen years ago)

uh, in the California town where I grew up, it was pronounced and spelled "poser"

I say (and spell it) "poser." Nobody in NJ ever used the term "hesher," but I heard that from one of my female cousins years ago and couldn't even figure out what the hell it was supposed to mean, I mean, it's not like "hesh" is a verb...

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Thursday, 17 September 2009 02:09 (sixteen years ago)

I think it derives from "hessian" ... I'd never heard it growing up.

I think in parts of England the term used by chavs is Mosher but emo's and goths get called that too I think. Anyone who is different to them they hate anyway.

it's true I am posing hard right now, what can I say sometimes you just feel like posing

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Thursday, 17 September 2009 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

i first heard "hessian" as a derogatory-but-in-a-loving-way term for metalheads by hipsters in the late 90s and found it hilarious.

Highly trained BBQ chef (rockapads), Thursday, 17 September 2009 03:31 (sixteen years ago)

just watched rules of the game. now I'm imagining a scathing critique of class but the metal version where everyone talks about heshers and posers.

when i was growing up in southern cali it was "hesher," but seemed to mutate into "hessian" later on. hesher was almost a synonym for stoner early on.

the idea was everyone could nominate stuff, but nate starts the thread.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 20 September 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

Someone made me a 3 cd comp called The Doom that Time Forgot that is chock full of 70s material (most of which I hadn't heard before).

Sure Sabbath has to be on our comp--but there's no shortage of golden heavyweights from that era. Most of those bands simply didn't know they were making doom.

And the 80s disc needs to start with Animal Magnetism - title track.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 20 September 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

I thought you preferred 80s metal in general?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 25 March 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

yes, generally, and earlier. Early 70s hard rock/metal is really my favorite thing, but I'm pretty much open to any era.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Friday, 25 March 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

but you're not so fond of thrash or other extreme sub-genres?
