The album was written, performed, and recorded by Kevin Barnes, with assistance from friends and family: prominent Elephant Six members Bryan Poole, Jamey Huggins and Heather McIntosh, as well as Barnes' wife Nina Twin, and daughter Alabee Blonde. "We Were Born..." is the correct answer.

Favorite lyric: "No mere limp verse could incite identity destruction."

kshighway, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

kamerad, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 00:30 (sixteen years ago)

cool, it's been two years time for a re-do.

anyways, when i first bought this record i listened to it everyday for six to nine months. i just kept discovering new things to like about this album. this was my first of Montreal and i just felt like i have never heard anything quite like it before.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 01:47 (sixteen years ago)

I remember reading something -- perhaps a P4k Guest List -- where Barnes was discussing how much he LOVED the sound of the Rickenbacker bass that he used all over the album. Couldn't agree with him more. That liquid-sounding low end! Yes!

kshighway, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 01:57 (sixteen years ago)

kamerad otm, it's the final track for me

k3vin k., Wednesday, 26 August 2009 02:23 (sixteen years ago)

tho this is probably my "album of the decade" too and I love everything here

k3vin k., Wednesday, 26 August 2009 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

i think i voted for "the past is a grotesque" animal last time so this time i'm gonna vote for "suffer for fashion"

this album deserves all fanboy praise

sailor goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 02:25 (sixteen years ago)

lol I voted very much in character...although my 2nd-choice wd have been 'faberge falls for shuggie' and maybe I shd have given that a bit of love

'suffer for fashion' is superb

does anyone know when controller sphere's supposed to come out?

kamerad, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 03:07 (sixteen years ago)

labyrinth pomp is the best song bowie never forgot

abanana, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)

The first time I heard this I was underwhelmed by the first one or two songs, but by the end of the record I was hooked. It's definitely my favorite thing they've ever done. Voted for "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal", but almost every song is great.

Dan S, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 04:33 (sixteen years ago)

i love love love this record but everything afterwards has been so awful in comparison

"She's A Rejecter" is one of my favorites, too. Great lyrics.

I went with Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger but really could have picked four or five others...

"labyrinth pomp is the best song bowie never forgot"

fyi this band have never sounded like anything to do with bowie ~

thomp, Thursday, 27 August 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

i re-listened to this today and loved every moment again, haven't put it on in a long time. the second half with songs like "Bunny Ain't No Kind of Rider," "Labyrinthian Pomp" and "She's a Rejecter" really stood out this time around.

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

so who's gonna poll Skeletal Lamping

...or is that album too much like one continuous song (in which case I'm voting for The Second Half)

it's too soon, but i'll do it

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:22 (sixteen years ago)

that's a bit of a cop-out tbh

triphallus, to punctuate! >>> plastis wafers > id engager > mingusings = nonpareil of favor > and i've seen a bloody shadow = an eluardian instance > beware our nubile miscreants > touched something's hollow > death is not a parallel move > women's studies victims >> for our elegant caste = st. exquisite's confessions >> gallery piece >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> wicked wisdom

???

"but i'll do it"

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

no i mean my line about it being a continuous song was a cop-out, hence a full track comparison

eleven years pass...

"I'm so touched by your goodness
You make me feel so criminal
How do you keep it together?
I'm all, all unraveled
But you know, no matter where we are
We're always touching by underground wires"

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 November 2020 06:16 (five years ago)

heard this song, out of the blue tonight, and wanted to bring it up...

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 November 2020 06:27 (five years ago)

the year this came out I was big into doing college radio and there was no one using the slots between like 1am and 7am, so I asked if I could do a top 100 of the year countdown, which they let me do, and "The Past is a Grotesque Animal" was my #1, which I cranked nice and loud on the monitors while absolutely delirious at the very end. good times.

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Thursday, 5 November 2020 12:52 (five years ago)

I adore OM but The Past...is kind of a transcendent entity, it goes well beyond the music of the time let alone OM themselves, it kind of comes out of nowhere and there's nothing like it

imago, Thursday, 5 November 2020 12:57 (five years ago)

i dunno. i never really saw the big deal with it. it's okay but it's just a guy whining about his relationship over a repetitive motorik beat and some neat 'ooh-ooh-ooh' backing vocals. I prefer tracks like Gronlandic Edit really

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:13 (five years ago)

yeah but it was done quite a bit before that though

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:23 (five years ago)

don't get me wrong, i like it as a big monolithic statement in the middle of an otherwise frantic, tartrazine-fuelled record, but it's not the highlight for me

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:24 (five years ago)

For me, it doesn't quite earn its length but it's still a good song. Not my favorite on the album either, but it's hard to compare it to a bunch of much shorter songs

Vinnie, Thursday, 5 November 2020 15:34 (five years ago)

it isn't my favourite OM song, but it certainly stands apart from the rest

imago, Thursday, 5 November 2020 15:40 (five years ago)

otm

there's always something to be said for an artist finding a level of catharsis they probably didn't even think themselves capable of

imago, Thursday, 5 November 2020 16:01 (five years ago)

this album came out when I was in the middle of one of my very worst depressive episodes and the thing that always struck me about this particular song is that the catharsis never actually comes. It just builds and builds and builds but by the end, whatever crisis he’s going through is still there, better defined but without any real release or liberation. I found it comforting at the time - the way I felt it mirrored the endless loop I was trapped in.
