Barker’s on-and-off-girlfriend Shanna Moakler was one of the first to respond to the news online, tweeting, “My deepest condolences for DJ AM, you were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and Prayers to his family and friends.” ?uestlove added, “It’s one thing to lose a teacher I never met. But it’s some other shit to lose a teacher I knew.”

butthurt (deej), Saturday, 29 August 2009 09:57 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, he was. I think he was obese at the time (no direct connection to the fact he was in crazytown) but got healthy.

Apparently he was suffering from PTS syndrome due to the crash (together with Travis B and 4 other guys. The latter died in the fire)

I followed his tweets for a while. Not a huge fan by any means, but it still saddens me to think he suffered so much from the crash, he took his own life. Apparently his body was 50procent in burn wounds?

jaxon my friend had this done - it actually requires a pretty huge lifestyle change and is not like getting a facelift or something

Miss Fitzhenry (s1ocki), Saturday, 29 August 2009 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, it takes a LONG time to go through, and constant care is needed -- a friend also did similar. She has no regrets (as she said once, she was thrilled to discover she could actually rush for the car when she was running late once) but it wasn't easy.

He began dating actress Nicole Richie in 2004 and announced their engagement a year later in February 2005.[26] However, the couple broke up in late 2006.[27] "The one thing that stands out about Adam is that I can be myself," Richie said after the breakup.[28] After his breakup with Richie, Goldstein dated singer-actress Mandy Moore.[29][30] He was good friends with Steve Aoki, Cory Kennedy, Samantha Ronson, John Mayer, Paris Hilton, Travis Barker and DJ Eric Cubeechee.[31]

I heard him play a few times. He was technically very good and even inspired (and crowds would eat it up), but he was the type to switch tracks every 30 seconds (or less) which could be wearying.

that's silly. you can make good money doing this. a friend of mine from philly used to get flown to vegas to spin and he got paid a ton and he said the crowds were always insane and loved what he played and he got to stay in amazing hotel suites! sounds good to me. and he was and is a very serious deejay with plenty of, you know, "cred" and all that.

jaxon, Sunday, 30 August 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

But there was more to DJ AM than being chased down by paparazzi.

If fans of Crazy Town's unsteadying rap-rock-electronic hit, "Butterfly," check the credits, they'll find DJ AM was manning the turntables and doing the scratching. Look and listen further and you find that his place in the metal-hip-hop mash-up stakes extends to artists like Papa Roach, Madonna, and Will Smith.

The boy could spin. That's how he won his reputation, one he lent to the flashy Pure nightclub in Las Vegas before he bought part of Dusk this year.

If he wasn't a commercially and aesthetically viable name worthy of admiration and paying customers, would fellow investors have dropped millions looking to cash in? Don't bet on it.

If he wasn't great, would Jay-Z - arguably the greatest rapper ever - have let DJ AM spin beside him during October's reopening of the Hollywood Palladium, barely a month after DJ AM's plane crash? H-to-the-Iz-NO.

DJ AM had chops as a scratcher and a spinner, plain and simple.

Everything else - the gossip, the drugs - was beneath him.

Apparently the anti-anxiety drugs he took to recover from the plane crash and coping with a lot of fear when taking planes - something he had to do quite frequently - re-ignited his drug usage. Apparently he wasn't using for a long time. The mixing of the prescription drugs and crack resulted in an overdose or accidental death. I can't imagine how he coped: surviving a plane crash and then having to still take lots of planes for dj-ing jobs. Dude also tried to kill himself when he was 24 but the gun jammed! WTF.

I ain't stanning for their music at all - up there with Limp Bizkit in re the jock musick - but I still think it's a damn shame when someone dies.

okay, i admit that i wrote that to seem like a blowhard. but this guy was in one stupid band and dated model-actresses, and suddenly he's like hot shit?

How should dating some B-listers influence how good a dj he was? It has no correlation. And he was in a shitty band, so what? It's a damn shame he died (like anyone else dying). Sure he moved in some crappy circles (Cory Kennedy? Urgh Aoki? Ek.) but y'know they're people and if they (accidently) die, then that's pretty darn sad. It's fucking weird to see their sadness on twitter. Kinda oO but then why not twitter that sad shit.

It is easy to lose cred when your promotion overshadows your actual work. I know more about his love life and clothing deals than I do about his release schedule.

Also, that top ten is loaded with the most obvious sure shots in the book. He just needs to throw in some Duran Duran, Salt N Pepa's Push It, Kriss Kross's Jump Jump, Wrex N Effect's Rump Shaker, and some Thriller and he has the game sown up. Anybody could play any of those songs in any order and have a floor.

look, i'm done here after this post, but i just can't fathom how one person can get so much ILX-vitriol thrown at him and another so much ILX 'oh cmon this is REALLY SAAAD' sentiment thrown at him. considering the fact that Dash died under similar (if not altogether the same) circumstances, i am just a bit perplexed, that's all. both of these dudes made a bit of good stuff and a lot of crappy stuff, neither of them led lives that one would consider morally exemplary, and while it is sad that they are no longer with us, that doesn't make criticizing them some sort of fucking crime.

not sure how anyone here is stanning for him when most of us have never even heard his music or DJ-ing.

the responses on the dash snow thread seemed to be more directed towards the sort of circles he ran in that encouraged his self-destructiveness, rather than directed at dash snow himself. whereas i dunno AM's death seems more of a straight-up personal tragedy - dude was involved in a horrible plane crash that killed his friends and he just couldn't deal. sad ends for both but i don't really get where you think people are being all "wow this guy's an artist and a legend and dash snow sucks."

You do realize that this thread is about a dude who snuffed himself on crack and pills at 36. It isn't like he is going to stumble into Larry Levan status in a decade. He is going to be that clown from crazytown who made a lot of money by being as LCD as possible. Those celeb tweets are about as far as his legacy is going to go.
