Possibly the worst McCartney album, save for "Wild Life". Voted "Let'em In", but I am generally unimpressed with this one.

I like "Beware My Love" and "Time to Hide" the best, but more for the Wings Over America versions. There are a few other good songs on here (She's My Baby, The Note You Never Wrote), but the warm pudding of inoffensiveness dolloped over the album really hurts it.

Worse than Back to the Egg or Off the Ground?

post-contrarian meta-challop 2009 (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:57 (sixteen years ago)

"Back To The Egg" and "Off The Ground" are both quite good albums. A bit too "rough" sounding for my liking, but still with lots of good songs. And no stuff sung by Denny Laine or Linda McCartney, which is also an advantage.

Back to the Egg is a great album- possibly the most consistent Wings album other BotR. Speed of Sound is the weakest, worse than Wild Life. At the same time, Beware My Love is incredible so that's my vote.

I also want to give props to Warm and Beautiful. It tends toward the mawkish but I find the melody to be gorgeous...

Actually, I forgot Silly Love Songs and Let 'Em In are on this, I guess it would have to be better than Wild Life.

ColinO, Saturday, 29 August 2009 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, "Wild Life" lacks decent songs at all (well, "Dear Friend" is OK). But "Let'em In" and "Silly Love Songs" are IMO far from among McCartney's best songs either.

Let em In is great.

The singles are great but I'm a little worn out on them, and the production softens/muddies the rest a little too much. By no means the worst Macca effort, but not one I put on too often. Torn between "She's My Baby" (cute and catchy) and, sorry Geir, but "Wino Junko" which I think is just fabulous, no matter who wrote it. Love the whole goofy breakdown with the funky vocoder stuff, great bass playing in there too, and then the way the strident acoustic guitar announces the return of the chorus. Dumb song, great recording, all good fun.

I have trouble seeing anything else as worse apart from maybe "Wild Life".
"Pipes Of Peace" has the title track, "The Man" and "Keep Under Cover". "Red Rose Speedway" has "My Love" and a lovely medley at the end. The two "McCartney" albums are patchy, but deserves props for trying, plus there are "Waterfalls", "Junk" and "Maybe I'm Amazed". And everything since 1989 has been quite good actually, with "Driving Rain" and "Off The Ground" obvious lows that are still way better than his 70s lows.

Well Wild Life does have two gems in Tomorrow and Some People Never Know. I also kinda dig the Love is Strange cover.

Red Rose Speedway may be my secret favorite actually.

"Wild Life" needs a poll!

Mark G, Sunday, 30 August 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

I'm kind of coming around to Wild Life very slightly, although I thought Mumbo was better before I found out that it didn't have lyrics. I don't know why that should matter, but it does.

On the other hand, I love the sound of the first few Paul Mac recordings. Wish he'd been able to keep that later on...

A way too loud bass guitar put extreme left or right in one channel? No, thank you! Paul McCartney is a horrible producer!

Mumbo does have lyrics, they're just not printed anywhere...

Mark G, Thursday, 3 September 2009 08:24 (sixteen years ago)

"yeah, if your love isn't mine, I don't wanna take it"

and so on...

must have been fun to be in wings. they are a pretty silly band, imagine lots of musical lols at their jams, cheesy bass sweeps & drum fills and stuff

night of the living based gods (flopson), Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

It would've been a ball if Paul hadn't been its leader.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

why?

night of the living based gods (flopson), Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

To be the only talent in a band full of second-rate non-entities is hard, especially on the second-rate non-entities.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

on the other hand Joe English and Jimmy McCullough can boast that they often dragged Paul down to their level.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, kinda feel like at least some of the Wings people would be known as entities in their own right if they'd been in bands not fronted by Paul McCartney. Jimmy McCullough was pretty bitchin'!
