I'm playing Pulp's Different Class album right now and it's doing a wonderful job making its case. I can't even do a good job conveying just why this is, but I was going to say something about it being a sort of party record that is actually "anti-party." Looking underneath the music we find revenge tales ("I Spy," "Mis-Shapes"), nostalgia for better days and youthful naivete ("Disco 2000"), and the idea of most hedonism jut being an ephemeral escape from daily ennui ("Common People," a few other songs). The album is one long subversive take on hedonism and "the good life," which is especially interesting to hear on the one night of the week on which you almost feel contractually obligated to "have a good time." Saturday night remembered by Sunday evening (or maybe by "Monday Morning"?).
Anybody else have their favorite?

although that may just be 'cause of the inclusion of "Oh Lonesome Me," i dunno. still, the album does capture that kinda late-nite/early-morning and i'm alone despondency just perfectly to suit my mood most times on such occasions.

I like this song especially for these occasions, and now that I read the lyrics they're actually kinda sad but the way Lou sings them it really lightens the mood.
Goodnight ladies, ladies goodnight
Its time to say goodbye
Let me tell you now
Goodnight ladies, ladies goodnight
Its time to say goodbye
Now all night long youve been drinking your tequilla
But now youve sucked your lemon peel dry
So why not get high
Goodnight ladies, ladies goodnight
Goodnight ladies, ladies goodnight
Its time to say goodbye
Goodnight sweet ladies, ladies goodnight
Its time to say goodbye bye bye
Oh weve been together for the longest time
But now its time to get high
Come on lets get high
And goodnight ladies, ladies goodnight
Oh, Im still missing my other half
Ah, it must be something I did in the past
Dont it just make you want to laugh
Its a lonely saturday night
Oh, nobody calls me on the telephone
I put another record on my stereo
But Im still singin a song of you
Its a lonely saturday night
Now if I was an actor or a dancer who is glamorous
Then you know an amorus life would soon be mine
But now the tinsil lighted starbreak is all thats left
To play my heartbreak
At eleven oclock I watch the network news
Oh, wow, wow, something tells me that youre nearly gone
You said we could be friends but thats not what I want
Ah, anyway my tv dinners almost done
Its a lonely saturday night
I mean to tell you its a lonely saturday night
One more round

Um...I think 'nearly' is actually really. I think some of those lyrics are wrong. Curse the internet.

Jonathan Richman/Modern Lovers, really. "I self develop, necessary to self help".

i like 'looking for the heart of saturday night' for when very little is going on and i'm tossing up whether to head out and make a fist of it... before ultimately deciding to stay in. it emphasises the desperation of trying to make a night work and the elusiveness of the good times when the odds are clearly stacked against you.
