warm weather makes me vote Melodians. if this poll were 4 months from now, i'd vote "Big Boss Man"...

outdoor_miner, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

Some strong R&B here: Harold Melvin, D'Arby, LL, Janet, Stylistics, Jackie. Great Elvis ballad, a Jimmy Reed classic. But the Melodians rule here.

"The Love I Lost," not even close.

if I don't see more dissent, I'm going to have to check myself in (Matos W.K.), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

Marsh is a big Blades fan, that's not surprising.

I'm not always in the mood for Janet, Harold Melvin, and the Drifters, but I'm definitely in the mood for D'Arby's "Sign Your Name," so I voted for that.

Does he stipulate whether "Rock The Bells" is the original 12-inch version (in which case I'd probably vote for it) or the LP version (in which case I'd probably vote for Sylistics or Melodians instead)?

xhuxk, Sunday, 30 August 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

Or Melvin and the Blue Notes (or the Stylistics spelled correctly), maybe.

xhuxk, Sunday, 30 August 2009 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

He doesn't say which version of "Rock The Bells" he chose.

Janet. If the HM&tBNs slot had been filled by "Bad Luck," that would've been the no-contest winner.

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Sunday, 30 August 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

Ugh. The most achingly workaday stretch so far. Stylistics but zzzzzzzz...

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 30 August 2009 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

"Bad Luck" made the cut at #301, you can vote for it there.

I went for the underrated "Sign Your Name."

Joseph McCombs, Sunday, 30 August 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

Three Philly soul classics! But Jerry Butler gets my vote.

ρεμπετις, Sunday, 30 August 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

x-post The catalog number he lists for "Rock the Bells" matches the one for the 12" I think.

President Keyes, Sunday, 30 August 2009 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

A tepid group for me also. One exception: "Just Once in My Life," which I think is more or less as awesome as "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (and benefits from not having been played to death).

clemenza, Monday, 31 August 2009 01:00 (sixteen years ago)

am i really going to be the only person to vote for fast car?

king boy pamito (electricsound), Monday, 31 August 2009 01:08 (sixteen years ago)

Agree this is a comparatively dull batch. Pres. Keyes convinces me to vote for LL; I'd go Stylistics then Melodians then Blue Notes then Jimmy Reed after that...then, slim pickings, I'd say. (Pathetically, Costello might actually be next on my list.)

xhuxk, Monday, 31 August 2009 01:22 (sixteen years ago)

(Actually, Valens would probably beat Costello, come to think of it. But still.)

xhuxk, Monday, 31 August 2009 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

Easy choice for me - "Rivers of Babylon" makes me happy every time I hear it.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 31 August 2009 01:46 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, ^^^^^ this totally, tho I do love the Terence Trent D'Arby song.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 31 August 2009 01:48 (sixteen years ago)

^^Sananda nee Terence is great too; just not Melodians great.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 31 August 2009 01:57 (sixteen years ago)

Rivers Of Babylon is one of my least favorite songs on the The Harder They Come soundtrack, which is just an indication of how mind-blowingly amazing that soundtrack is.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 31 August 2009 02:00 (sixteen years ago)

I love Costello, D'Arby, and the Melodians, but it's Tracy Chapman that owns my heart.

banjoboy, Monday, 31 August 2009 02:00 (sixteen years ago)

Sadly, I can't take Ms. Chapman seriously after a friend in high school sang the song, "You've got a fast car, I've got a tarantula on my head."

EZ Snappin, Monday, 31 August 2009 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno. I remember loving Fast Car when it was released, but it seems so dated now.

Maybe if it had some glockenspiel, or a more Balaeric sound, or a Cookie-Monster death-growl.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 31 August 2009 02:08 (sixteen years ago)

Blast beats would really help.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 31 August 2009 02:12 (sixteen years ago)

I've always liked "Fast Car" but I prefer In Living Color's "Fast Car" performed by the great lost Kim Wayans:

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 31 August 2009 02:23 (sixteen years ago)

A lot of ballads here and a lot of stuff again (about half this time) I don't think I even know but the two I like best are "Rivers of Babylon" and "Alison," and I've overplayed the former in recent years, so I'll go with Costello (and don't feel remotely pathetic for doing so... I was sick of it for a long time, but it's an amazing ballad). Stylistics would be a close third, though in their own canon of hits it ranks about fifth or sixth for me.

sw00ds, Monday, 31 August 2009 03:46 (sixteen years ago)

Fast Car is dated, yes, but still sounds great

Dan S, Monday, 31 August 2009 05:48 (sixteen years ago)

I used to hate that song, but I think I'm voting for it.
