For the short answer, get yourself the Rocket Girl tribute to Spacemen 3 and pick and choose for yourself. I'd say Bowery Electric but their last album was a bit crap. Otherwise, erm, Mahogany, but that tends a bit towards the early Lush/Cocteaus end rather than Slowdive.

Modern shoegaze seems to have been co-opted by the Mogwai school of thought, with its quiet/loud dynamics, rather than yards and yards of useless beauty where the interest is that nothing ever happens.

kate, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Andy K, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigur Ros!

Is anyone here old enough to remember the Nicky Wire "I hate Slowdive more than Hitler" quote?

chris sallis, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That was Richey. I suspect that quote will eventually be the only reason anyone remembers Slowdive.

Justyn Dillingham, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

1. sigur ros has nothing to do with shoegazing.
2. sigur ros music is the biggest wank ever produced on earth.
or was this a joke?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it Richey? OK. The whole shoegazing/scene that celebrates/thames valley scene thing remains the best example I can think of of the music press building something up and then utterly savaging it.

"Shine" is lovely though. In fact, can I give you my Shoegazing top 5?

1. Taste - (Ride) 2. Shine - (Slowdive) 3. Kinky Love (Pale Saints) 4. Soft as Snow (and warm inside) - MBV 5. Sway (Spiritualized)

Sigur Ros definitely remind me of MBV, Slowdive, Spiritualized etc i.e. shitloads of swirling chorus, flange and delay effects, blurry, disembodied vocals, song speeds rarely exceeding 80 bpm.

chris sallis, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i just saw these guys called skywave who played a very nice shoegaze set in toronto. i don't know anything about them except that they are from the states and they have a few records out. gotta google it.

ddd, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i doubt too many slowdive fans would consider it "as good as," but i've really been into the new sianspheric album lately (the sound of the colour of the sun). spacey buried vocal and gorgeous guitar noise abound. more mbv-ish than slowdive, but if (like myself) you're still looking for the next "loveless," this is a good trip.

drake, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I know they're not considered "shoegazer" sonically speaking, but The Mighty Lemondrops actually gazed at their shoes, which I think was copied by others. They had good catchy hits.

Andy, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do we call it "shoegazing"? That is the most horrible name.

charlie va, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Slowdive is seriously underrated. All three of their albums are fantastic, and all three are quite different from each other.

Manny Parsons, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Why do we call it "shoegazing"? That is the most horrible name."

It's because the bands would stand on stage and not move around. they'd just look down.

Manny Parsons, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of Slowdive, would some kind soul be so generous as to burn me a copy of Pygmalion, as I've pretty much given up hope of finding one myself (well, for less than 50 bucks)? I'd be happy to send you a few bucks for the CDR and shipping.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Gee, Clarke, I would, but since you publicly insulted fushitsusha and the ENTIRE genre of rap, I'm gonna have to decline.

Manny Parsons, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Check out Aarktica. His EP on Darla's Bliss Out series from this year is particularly good. It takes swirly shoegazer ambience and matches it with electronic beats. Hardly an original idea, but he's one of the best doing that right now ... the beats stutter, pulse and fade, augmenting each song without overpowering. His voice is typically soft and breathy, and the lyrics are romantic without being too overdone. Very satisfying to drift away to ...

But he's a solo artist, you said 'bands.' I'd have to recommend Darla again, they just reissued Auburn Lull's "Alone I Admire," which was out-of-print I guess after originally being issued on Burnt Hair Records back in 1999. Some of the most pure, rich guitar virtuosity I've ever heard. Slow, patient drones rise and fall, cymbals shimmer and sighing vocals sometimes intrude. Absolutely beautiful, and all smooth soft edges with few recognizable corners that will catch in your memory afterwards, so you can keep going back again and again.

Neither of these are as pop as Slowdive, though.

E-mail me if you haven't already gotten an offer.

JC, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Malory! Isobella! Buy everything on Clairecords. Shoegazer heaven. I am not fucking with you. It's great.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

New bands as good as Slowdive?? No

But do check out: Landing,Yume Bitsu,Windy and Carl, Bark Psychosis and Sianspheric. All good if you like Slowdive. Also I saw some where that the German label Morr Music was doing a compilation that included several new electronia acts doing covers from Souvlaki.

brg30, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Malory sounds nearly exactly like slowdive, they even admit it on their website choosing to say they are expanding on the same ideas. the new album 'outerbeats' is gorgeous. hard to believe they are german. pia frauss is somewhat slowdivey too and from estonia, funny mbv gets all the critical adulation but it is slowdive that all the kids try to emulate.

keith, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

MBV were a rock band! Slowdive were far gentler (at least on record)

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

While still good, Slowdive are a little too loud on teh guitars to be Slowdive. Id be leaning towards The Emerald Down or Asobi Seksu in terms of Slowdive.

And for their record they weren't looking at their shows but trying to find the right pedal in the mess. umm looking for candidates here or here but the second one has a warning that they will be on vacation for a week in July.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

agree!!! Malory and Isobella are so great and beautiful

jennie, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i wasn't that in to the auburn lull stuff, i prefered the alisons halo lp from around the same time, but then i guess all this stuff is 3 or 4 years old as well now!

gareth, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

1) Shoegazing is a misnomer. Shoegazing bands were not actually looking at their SHOES, they were looking at their EFFECTS UNITS to figure out which PEDAL to hit next.

2) I always thought that Slowdive were rather the most over-rated band of the Shoegazer era. They had some lovely moments, but all in all they were mostly about wibble. Especially when they let Brian Eno get involved...

kate, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate is alas mistaken in my mind about Slowdive and its worth there, but I would say that. ;-)

Most of the Useful Names of the new bunch have been mentioned, but I would like to acknowledge Study of the Lifeless, the amazing Bethany Curve and most especially My New Fave Neogaze Band, the Peter Parkers, whose "Somatic" alone ranks as one of the best songs I've heard in the past couple of years.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Dont threaten me Ned or I'll have to mail you their ep. God knows when they will release their album

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And jumping at any chance I get (once again) to promote a band from Moncton here we go again with Peter Parker links...

Sorry back to your thread...

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I already bought it from them.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

well then you dont have to threaten me. SWEAT!

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If Slowdive are about wibble, then by all means BRING IT OOONNNNNNNN! I'm pretty sure Slowdive are impossible to over-rate; listened to Souvlaki for the first time in a while last night - chills all over, speechless, etc. They really are *something else* - they're not rock, I know that much.

Clarke B., Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ESOJ: MBV rock? Maybe, but what about all those "swoonily amorphous ballads" as Reynolds describes them on Isn't Anything, the record that influenced the shoegazers more than any other?

chris sallis, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

rock bands can have ballads too! well... i guess i was thinking more from the live perspective.. but, esp on "Isn't Anything", the heavy stuff outnumbers the floatier stuff

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

we have a band here in seattle named "peter parker" but they dont gaze at their shoes

Ron, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope but the Moncton Peter Parkers and the Seattle Peter Parker did appear on a compilation out of Washington State together a few years ago. Called 4 Dots.
Just to confuse you eh?

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Slowdive is still the best~~

reginia, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Can't comprehend why people dislike slowdive. Maybe they like Mojave 3? the song "When the sun hits".... so sad, yet so inspiring. The best slowdive knockoffs are Malory, The Emerald Down, even some of volplanes efforts were sorta slowdive'esque. If you want mbv inspired bands look into Swirlies, and Pias Fraus.

Z Davis, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 21:24 (twenty years ago)

seven months pass...
Help! I want the lyrics to "Shine" from the Blue Day EP! Can someone out there decipher them? Thanks!
And in the meantime, have a listen to The Jumblies...

Clouds of ocean
Drag you down
Shine

Waah

Wahh

Shine
They were called the Jumblies
They weren't very good
I saw you floating
I don't like the Jumblies

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

*cheers*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

There's this canadian band called Sianspheric, with the aforementioned miles and miles of useless beautiful noise and affects.

Think their most recent is "Sound of the Colour of The Sun"

Viz (Viz), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

mean ole mr nabisco.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I feel just awful about it.

Though it'd be kind of cool if the Jumblies turned out to be super-awesome, and I spent the next three years trying to convince people they were the best band in the world. That's the kind of dramatic irony that works out for everyone.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Mira's about as shoegaze now as Catherine Wheel was by the time they made Chrome but they just get better and better to me.

... And suddenly Ian Riese-Moraine is a naked man saying, 'Volvo! Volvo!' (Easte, Monday, 16 May 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)
