not gonna front like i'm voting for anything other than "an eluardian instance," but "nonpareil of favor," "triphallus, to punctuate!", "plastis wafers" and "id engager" are all close

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

triphallus, to punctuate! >>> plastis wafers > id engager > mingusings = nonpareil of favor > and i've seen a bloody shadow = an eluardian instance > beware our nubile miscreants > touched something's hollow > death is not a parallel move > women's studies victims >> for our elegant caste = st. exquisite's confessions >> gallery piece >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> wicked wisdom

f u for not liking "wicked wisdom," that song is beautiful.

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:28 (sixteen years ago)

the second half is basically a 3rd-rate fiery furnaces rip-off, and of montreal does not need to do that, much as I <3 the FFs

show me a fiery furnaces song that sounds like that, they've never waded that far into r&b

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:34 (sixteen years ago)

the last minute and a half is COMPLETELY fiery furnaces, think bitter tea-era, maybe 'the vietnamese telephone directory' or somesuch, and the first 3 and a half minutes leave me a bit cold, they're something of an unfinished half-assed genre exercise

IMO

anyway, the second half of the ALBUM is a wondrous exercise in sequencing. putting the lead single at the end was an absolutely inspired move. great segues pretty much throughout. first half is patchy, but the highs (nonpareil, eluardian, touched) are high. touched, rather than wafers, is this album's 'grotesque animal' lololol but seriously, it just needs two cycles rather than forty billion and is something quite gorgeous

why'm i so damaged, girl?

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

i sing it to myself all the time, and i would love to cover it with a full band and maybe maybe make it a bit slower and longer

haha yeah you posted that somewhere else and i noted the song's lack of vacuum

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

i also seem to like "st. exquisite's confessions" and "gallery piece" much more than you do

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

you do. the music just isn't as compelling as elsewhere, those songs (for me at least) get stuck in slightly irritating ruts, whereas other songs on the album actually spread some wings and find a narrative worthy of all the dicking about

there should be a lot more >>>>s between 'death is not a parallel move' and 'women's studies victims', come to think of it, although the latter gets some props for the lyrics

yeah musically i pretty much just love the "chorus" of "gallery piece" but i like it mostly for the lyrics - they makes me think of someone in love for the first time who doesnt know what the hell he's doing which is endearing

"Nonpareil of Favor" is everything this album does right in one succinct package (and for me, 'succinct' is definitely what this album needed more of)

i have done a complete 360 with this album. after hearing and falling completely in love with Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? i was at a loss with this of Montreal album. i was so hard for me to get into but i kept trying and finally it hit me. and hit me it did with it becoming another one of my very favorite albums.

voting for "Gallery Piece" as it they lyrics that kill me every single time and so me.
