Yep I scrambled up the title by adding a nonexistent 'the' in there.

Moka, Monday, 31 August 2009 08:32 (sixteen years ago)

props for not going for the pun tho

iatee, Monday, 31 August 2009 08:32 (sixteen years ago)

Almost Crimes.

Marty Innerlogic, Monday, 31 August 2009 09:59 (sixteen years ago)

I had kind of a strange relationship with this album. Really didn't like it much at all for the first half dozen listens, but I kept on trying again as I really wanted some new indie and the reviews made it sound like it was right up my street. Finally it clicked and I grew to completely love it, and I hoped it would be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. But many mostly disappointing follow-ups and side projects later, it seems to have been more of a flash in the pan.

ledge, Monday, 31 August 2009 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

I want to vote for Shampoo Suicide but I don't want my vote to be confused as one for that other one

this is going to come down to Almost Crimes vs. Seventeen

tony dayo (dyao), Monday, 31 August 2009 12:54 (sixteen years ago)

I voted "Anthems."

Am I the only ILM'er who thinks their s/t followup record is better than this...? Even "It's All Gonna Break," the closer, is better than anything on YFIIP.

kshighway, Monday, 31 August 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know about better, but damn close.

That and 7/4 (Shoreline) and Superconnected are the only three that really do it for me off that album.

ledge, Monday, 31 August 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

this is still a pretty good album i think. almost crimes is probably my pick too, but i have a mad soft spot for "anthems."

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 August 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

KC Accidental does it for me

Fer Ark, Monday, 31 August 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

i can't choose, maybe "stars and sons." i haven't listened to the album in a couple years, but they use clips from that song as segues on cbc radio pretty often, and every time it gets me right good. what's great about this album is how well the dozens of guitars doing totally different things complement each other and form a gorgeous cloud of melody. like on stars and sons there're guitars feedbacking, some playing notes way off-key, and yet it's not noisy or ugly at all. just perfect.

no. i went back and forth on this a lot, and while i love YFIIP, once you get past the 100000 layers and overproduction on s/t and listen to it on a really good pair of headphones, it's probably better. but ask me tomorrow and i might change my mind.

MTLiens (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 31 August 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

be nice when they make another album, the broken social scene presents... stuff has been just okay, but they randomly started focusing on the side of the band that i am waaay less interested in. catchy indie songwriting is fine but tiptoeing ambient beauty and gorgeous instrumentation was clearly their strong point.

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

I agree with kshighway in that I'll take individual songs from the s/t over this album. if you're a fan of the s/t, hunt down the version of 'major label debut' from the EP

tony dayo (dyao), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:49 (sixteen years ago)

almost crimes is a remix? is the orig available somewhere?

Anthems, Anthems, Anthems.

In a weird way, Anthems was part of my break from listening to indie pop seriously, in that it was such a go-to track that the rest of the album seemed unremarkable in contrast. Solid, credible, sure. But nothing that grabbed me or fought for a place in my music listening.

I saw BSS a couple times live before this album had officially come out, and they were pretty great. I guess I expected a lot more of that crisp live sound to come through, but the rest of the album seemed so mannered and, well, boring. I know that some of those same criticisms can be leveled at Anthems, but it seemed like where they had tried hard with, say, Lover's Spit, to make rock songs, the only place they really succeeded in recording was this kinda goofy song that sounded totally natural, like it had burbled up and been recorded as a fluke. I know that's not true, that there's plenty of artifice there, but it was such a clean, clear perfect moment that the rest of the album fell away and never really came back for me.

Their second album went the wrong way, at least for me, though I get why other people like it, and I've recommended it to friends who were into that, and every time I've seen them, they've been pretty great live (unlike Feist, who's had some of the most bullshit underwhelming shows to the most adoring crowds I've ever seen).

James Blood Ulver (I eat cannibals), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 04:47 (sixteen years ago)

Not with the intention of turning this one into a pitchfork thread but I find odd, specially after reading some of the comments on this thread that the one song they chose from this album for the 'Pitchfork 500' book was "Cause = Time". Not that I don't think it's a great song - it's actually one of my favorites on the record next to anthems and almost crimes - but I've never heard of anyone mentioning it above the rest when referring to this album.

Moka, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 06:44 (sixteen years ago)

Pacific Theme from me!

dog latin, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 07:56 (sixteen years ago)

Anthems, definitely.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 08:35 (sixteen years ago)

They have a b-side called Backyards that has a similar cyclical vocal-melody-overlay thing going on, btw.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 08:36 (sixteen years ago)

"cause = time" was the big hit off of the album in canada. played the video on much music a bunch etc.

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 11:25 (sixteen years ago)

'anthems' by a mile these days. the ending still gets me every time. kind of tired of the cymbal crashing bravado of some of the more energetic numbers here.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 13:02 (sixteen years ago)

I remember when this came out people were talking up "Cause = Time" and "Almost Crimes" as the best songs on the record and when i heard them i was fairly underwhelmed. It was hearing the more atypical stuff like "Anthems" and "Lover's Spit" that got me to love the album.

'Backyards' was on the Beehives album that also has Feist's version of Lover's Spit. No idea if it was an album comprised of b-sides and rarities.

Moka, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

It was - beehives / b-sides.

I like Stars and Sons because of the bass line, the cool hand claps and how you can hear him inhale before he sings. That's why I voted for it. Haven't heard this album since it came out years back.

slagterm, Thursday, 3 September 2009 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me.

These words have been on a maddening loop in my brain since I saw this poll... so I voted for "Anthems", naturally.

Lostandfound, Friday, 4 September 2009 04:36 (sixteen years ago)

I like Stars and Sons because of the bass line

I thought I'd written this bass line myself once, but was sure it was a BSS song that definitely wasn't on this album, so I listened to all of the s/t and all of the Kevin Drew album and then decided maybe I did write it myself after all. Luckily I heard this album again before I actually used it for anything. But still going to vote for Anthems in the end.
