straight outta gothenburg

(inspired by some recent threads) I know liking melodeth is like one step removed from liking Bodom Beach Terror and you are gonna rub elbows with a lot of Hot Topic kids but jesus christ these are some really good bands. if you think some offshoot (or some contemporaneous act) does these guys better feel free to write in and make your case. also, vote for any stretch of discography you see fit, as some of these guys can be very spotty later on.

NB I didn't include Carcass why because I don't like them

tony dayo (dyao), Monday, 31 August 2009 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

HURL CROCKERY AT THE MOSQUE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 31 August 2009 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

I think only In Flames, At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity are the only ones really 'from' Gothenburg...but I feel the others I listed are pretty part and parcel when talking about melodeth xxp

tony dayo (dyao), Monday, 31 August 2009 14:17 (sixteen years ago)

actually i don't really hate at the gates, but they did accidentally ruin a lot of music.

HURL CROCKERY AT THE MOSQUE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 31 August 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

was waiting for the first tr00 metal dude to show up

tony dayo (dyao), Monday, 31 August 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

for me this is really about who's gonna be runner-up to at the gates, I'll take Slaughter of the Soul over the entire combined discographies of these other bands

tony dayo (dyao), Monday, 31 August 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I'm voting for At the Gates. Would've probably voted Carcass if they had been included tho.

123456789 (jim), Monday, 31 August 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

Dark Tranquility used to be my Gothenburg-band-of-choice, but since Slaughter Of The Soul is so unfuckwithable I voted At The Gates.

Marty Innerlogic, Monday, 31 August 2009 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

pretty obviously at the gates, tho soilwork, dark tranquility, and in flames all have their moments.

Fuck it, I gotta go with the band I listen to the most, so Amon Amarth it is. At the Gates give them a tough fight though.

3 mods 1 banhammer (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 31 August 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

it's not their fault, but at the gates have a lot to answer for as far as the zillion horrible metalcore bands that ripped them off. that said, they made some cool records. i actually like soilwork. i dig their chunky riffs and breakdowns. i think they were really good at what they did. and they kept their stuff at a high level for a long time. but amon amarth made one of my favorite metal albums EVER, so i vote them. i get diminishing returns from them though. the last two or three albums i've listened to once or twice each and i just don't get that same excitement level. i know adrien and others feel otherwise. i mean, they just get more popular with every album, so they must be doing something right. but i've listened to once sent from the golden hall at least a hundred times and it never gets old. it is a GREAT viking/war/death metal album. i don't listen to those other bands. not my kinda thing.

scott seward, Monday, 31 August 2009 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

actually, that's not entirely true. i like the first arch enemy album okay.

Okay let's just get serious now, Camden Town is nowhere near Gothenburg.

I like Dark Tranquility up through at least Damage Done which is great & would guess that most tr00 types who aren't posing will rep a little for Amon Amarth. Dig Arch Enemy, too, who might even get my vote here - the Heartwork stylings of the song "Ravenous" are the RADDEST.

Man Is Nairf! (J0hn D.), Monday, 31 August 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

I love all these bands! Arch Enemy get my vote, although all of the reasons that I came up with for voting for them could also be applied to other bands on here (Amon Amarth and Dark Tranquility are as consistent and catchy, In Flames and Soilwork have some seriously classic records), but they are one of my favorite bands at the moment.

Defender Of The Girly Metal Faith (J3ff T.), Monday, 31 August 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

so many better bands from gothenburg that aren't metal

cutty, Monday, 31 August 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

You are wrong. Leave now.

Seriously, have people forgotten all about Sacramentum? Best NWOSDM band from Gothenburg.

Too bad I missed this poll; I woulda voted Amon Amarth for sure.

sixteen years pass...

Tomas Lindberg is dead at 52. One of the sharpest dudes in music, generous and giving with his knowledge, changed the game before he was 23. Immense loss.

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 16 September 2025 11:27 (six months ago)

At the Gates were the first like non-mainstream metal band I got into. I was a straight edge hardcore kid and my friends all loved them. (which explains their influence on metalcore and such I guess). This is sad news.
