Oasis - Definitely Maybe Era Poll

'Columbia's the one I want to hear most right now, so that.

I've narrowed it down to "Supersonic", "Live Forever", "Whatever", or "Fade Away" so far.

This album is lost on me. Have we done Morning Glory yet?

I plan on following up with all of their studio albums and associated B-sides, so that'll be up next.

Ok, no that one was definitely not a mistake.

'slide away' is still fantastic, so i'm gonna go with that. plenty of hooks on that album - just seemed to have a certain spark that they were never quite able to touch on again.

Surprised at the list of b-sides here - I always figured more of the fabulous stuff on The Masterplan was earlier. So there's not so much competition here for the album tracks, and I'm torn between the swagger of Supersonic, the sweetness of Live Forever, and their equal blend (Digsy's Diner). Gotta sleep on this one.

I really think the Morning Glory B-sides were the best of the bunch, though these aren't to be ignored. But man, "Acquiesce", "Talk Tonight", "Round Are Way", "The Masterplan", "Step Out", the next poll will be a much harder choice I think.

Where's "Underneath the Sky" fit in? Love that one. Also "Going Nowhere."

Out of the B-sides I remember liking D'yer Wanna Be A Spaceman and Fade Away at the time but not much else.

But for me they're one of those bands who never did anything better than their 1st single.

"Underneath the Sky" also falls in the Morning Glory B-sides, "Going Nowhere" was on the Stand By Me single from Be Here Now.

I can't tell you the way I feel, because the way I feel is oh so new to me.

For a band devoted to inarticulacy, this was their most successful moment. It was another trick they copped from others, this time from Townshend; I don't know if they recognized the irony.

Live Forever. I remember the week it came out Radio 1 Evening Session asked DJs like the Chemical Brothers to do 15-minute mixes with the proviso that they had to start with Live Forever in some form. The Chems looped and fucked around with the opening drums and mixed into some proto-big beat record (Depth Charge maybe?) and I played that mix to death. Ah, 1994.

Fade Away and Rock'n'Roll Star also have the power to remind me in a second why I used to find Oasis so exciting.

It heartens me to see things like this, because it seems the intervening years have made most people completely forget that this band was once worth getting excited about.

They still have their moments. And anyway, most of their best moments were on "(What's The Story) Morning Glory" and its EPs.

Are all of these B-sides? I'm ashamed (or proud?) to admit I don't know any of these songs. Granted I've never been into Oasis because all I've heard from them in the past leaves me lukewarm but maybe I just started with the wrong album.

At some point in the spring or summer of 1994, I bought a UK import of the "Supersonic" single from some little shop in Ypsilanti, MI. I wasn't even going on word of mouth, but simply the fact that it was the latest Creation product (UK press hysteria couldn't have been further away from where I was at the time), so, to me, Oasis seemed like proper heirs to what Adorable were doing a year earlier: filtering the atmospherics of the Creation shoegaze roster through a more classic pop sound. The latest Ride album was a colossal let-down, so Oasis seemed to be the logical torch-bearers for that intersection of House of Love/Stone Roses/J&MC UK indie (The Beatles didn't register as a point of comparison until they tacked on "I am the Walrus" to whichever single it was attached to). The first three singles definitely supported that impression, even if "Shakermaker" & "Live Forever," themselves, now (correctly, obviously) register as early reaches for the MAJOR ROCK BAND status they would soon attain.

Maybe it is nostalgia, but I still prefer the hooks & bravado tainted by unsure production, buzzy guitars & shitloads of reverb. So I'll go with "Columbia," over "Fade Away" & sentimental favorite "Take Me Away." The question is whether to go with the WL demo or the album version. I'm leaning WL, but I'll listen to both before I vote.

Can't believe they actually released a song called Round Are Way.

Which contains the lyric "round our way the birds are mingin'".

Still not 100% convinced on which one I will be voting for.

Makes me really miss the old Definitely Maybe boxed set I had, the one that looked like a Benson & Hedges pack.. Still have it but the CDs are scratched beyond repair.

The CDs are easy to replace, they are all the UK singles. Except for the interview one. But they're all on ebay for cheap anyhow.

I also think of it as Digsy's Diner, but my (American) CDs are in a box somewhere so I can't check and see if this was based on any kind of reality...

After leaving the band, McCarroll travelled over the world for some years, and set up an elephant farm in Rotherham.

I know I saw Noel interviewed on a Canadian TV station & that's when I learned about the Digsy's Diner/Dinner mistake - I may be wrong about if it was *only* Canada but I remember Noel saying "Digsy's dinner" and George Strombolopolous going "lul wut?"

Live Forever but I really like the acoustic b-sides Take Me Away and Half the World Away...

There's only about three songs ever that have utterly floored me on first hearing. I think 'Live Forever' could've been the fourth, but first time I heard it they were doing an acoustic set on radio one and Noel was singing, which kind of ruined the impact. Still think 'Columbia' was the right choice here though.

"Shakermaker" because it's a total ripoff of that Coke song.

I know my copy has it listed at "Digsy's Diner" and mine was purchased at Record Service in Champaign, so I'm not sure just a Canadian thing.

Oh yeah, finally decided on "Live Forever". I was afraid that was too easy of a response, but after cranking this in my car over the weekend I cannot deny its power.

Jeez, this is tougher than I thought it would be. Live Forever, Slide Away, Married With Children, Half The World Away are all ace, plus the ridiculous swagger of Rock'n'Roll Star. I never really liked anything that much past this point (a few of the Morning Glory-era B-sides excepted), but for a year there back in 1994 they really actually did matter a lot.

It was, actually. It's the track that made me listen to them.

"Rock and roll star" had been on an earlier freebie cassette, but I didn't remember it until I found the tape about a year after the LP came out.

.. the proper studio version was a botched job, and the version on the "Help" charity comp was a "Beach boys party" style Noel plus mates version.

Gotta say I'm kind of baffled by the love for "Columbia," which I can only sorta hum in my head. Not horrible but never would have occurred to me as the best thing here - what's the appeal exactly?

it's hard to explain to people that Oasis actually have a good album worth hearing because their reputation has been so thoroughly ruined by all the shit that came after it.

im playing a few tracks off this lp for the first time in a decade or more and they seem mostly alright

it's a little wider of a spectrum than that but i mean i only ever approached ilm level over certain behemoths of 90's indie rock and the beatles- ito yr irish folk/trad, swing and/or musical standards, this is the stuff i have had occasion to perform is all i guess

a teammate in high school cross country had a wall filled with bootlegs. They were all oasis and the counting crows shows. It was confusing.

The band really should have broke up when Bonehead and Guigsy left.

I'm kinda fascinated by the untitled tracks on Morning Glory, especially the second one before 'Champagne Supernova'. Did anyone ever find out what the little snatch of a song is while the radio is being tuned in? Also, is that someone running a bath!?

There's also that odd, low sound before 'Some Might Say', which I figured out was one of the Gallagher brothers (I don't know which one) saying "Fuckin' hell!", but flipped backwards and then slowed down to a crawl. Surprised nobody ever picked up on that.

the thing that makes this album better than Morning Glory, in my opinion, is the production. it doesn't sound like they're trying to copy anyone.
