How was Belgian Newbeat for you?

phil, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pretty bad on the whole. i've got a garage full of the stuff and 99% of it will remain there until i can find a way to use it for landfill. morton sherman and belluci - the new beat pwl were responsible for some real atrocities. HOWEVER, when new beat became hardbeat is a different ball game entirely. dirty, dirty acid lines, slightly faster tempo but still with the porno samples - lovely! zsa zsa laboum, the first lords of acid single, agaric, major problem and just about the whole kaos roster - all still sound mighty today.

ah! just saw your link. i can forgive morton and sherman for their atrocities as i love some of their poesie noire work.

New Beat was me being 14 years old in the Bocaccio surrounded by too many coke heads. I probably shouldn't have been there. But I was. Crappiest act I can remember: Confettis.

On the website "Herman Gillis is Sherman" > invented the filterbank if I am not mistaken. He's now working with Daan/Dead Man Ray (which I am listening to now actually).

Hilarious is the fact that Joepie (a teen mag a la Smash Hits) included this on a comp.

i've bought a couple of 12"s and a vinyl comp and a lot of the stuff is sorta too silly or too stiff. it wasn't until i read that the djs played a lot of the 12"s at 33 instead of 45 that it all started making sense to me and fit into my whole cosmic disco frame of mind. listen to these 2 back to back. the second just does it for me for some reason.
