Who's into Nneka?

No one it seems - she's been mentioned just four times on ILM, all of which derive from a nomination in last year's album poll. But I heard 'Heartbeat' the other day and liked it a lot, it's got an almost drum-and-bass thing going on. Nice to see what Lagos looks like in the video too. Anyone?

Were all those mentions from me?

I love both of her albums, but the first one probably a little bit more. "Heartbeat" is my favorite song of hers, though.

They were indeed. I see that Heartbeat first came out in 2008 - she seems to be getting some kind of relaunch here at the moment.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 September 2009 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

I think both of her albums were slapped into one package for a UK label or something.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 September 2009 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Heartbeat is killer.

That comparison to the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - is it only down to the sleeve?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 September 2009 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, the similarities are superficial at best, but it evokes the same kind of mood (for me at least).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 September 2009 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

Check out "The Uncomfortable Truth" from her first album... it's a little more Lauryn Hill-ish

Great album - they played this remix at least three times throughout the night at Stink Like Sock in Cambridge:

Concrete Jungle, a comp of her two (?) previous albums, is streaming at MSN this week. The fast ones sound pretty good! The jury's still out on whether I'm into her, though.

K'Naan seems like a more operative comparison than Lauryn Hill. Both politically outspoken, from troubled African countries, who have songs explicitly namechecking Africa as a whole. And they each have some reggae influences and a song with loud guitars. (I don't have a tracklisting in front of me.) So far I prefer K'Naan's '09 album, but I may prefer this to Miseducation. The highs aren't as high, but there's not as much meandering (though there is still a little meandering).
