some dude, Friday, 4 September 2009 01:57 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a huge Mercury stan and not real big into Bowie, but I might have to vote for 2:54-3:32 just for how incredible and climactic it is

some dude, Friday, 4 September 2009 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

This song benefits from repeating itself over and over.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 4 September 2009 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

xxp i was just gonna say it's this one

2:54-3:32 ("'Cause love's such an old fashioned word...")

what's the deal with this video, why is it so perfect and why does it contain the exact frame featured on the cover of Walk AMong Us

Mr. Big Boy Talk (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Friday, 4 September 2009 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

nevermind, went for 2:37-2:54, which sets up that part while being really awesome in and of itself (xpost)

some dude, Friday, 4 September 2009 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

"It's the terror of knowing..." You have no IDEA on first listen that the song will change chords and direction like this.

post-contrarian meta-challop 2009 (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 September 2009 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

My EMP paper this year went off on the greatness of 2:54-3:32's declaration of love as radicalizing, redemptive. I wound up reciting that last verse, my little incantation the only way I could figure to express my love for it and invoke its power. So, that one.

dad a, Friday, 4 September 2009 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

goddamn this song is incredible

some dude, Friday, 4 September 2009 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

you see, here's the difference: theirs goes "doon doon doon doon-doon-doon-doon." mine goes "doon doon doon doon-doon-doon doon *chik*"

iago g., Friday, 4 September 2009 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

man what a great idea for a poll

HOOSteen we have a problem (s1ocki), Friday, 4 September 2009 03:13 (fifteen years ago)

Great poll, but gotta go with 2:54-3:32 cos that's the part I always anticipate the most and sing along to the loudest.

kate78, Friday, 4 September 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

it's gotta be 2:22-2:37 ("Why - why - why ?...") for me - i just love it when Bowie rev's his voice up like that. wow!

what kinda life is that? (Ioannis), Friday, 4 September 2009 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

er...revs.

what kinda life is that? (Ioannis), Friday, 4 September 2009 06:25 (fifteen years ago)

2:54, but some dude's right, freddie's bit before sets it up perfectly.

wtf is giant scary voodoo alien spider at 3:03 from?

ledge, Friday, 4 September 2009 08:46 (fifteen years ago)

2:37-2:54 ("Can't we give ourselves one more chance...")

and in particular the repeated "give love give love give love"s as they fade into Bowie's reply that love's such an old-fashioned word. Mercury annoys me at various points in the first half of the song, e.g. the screamed "let me out"s. But the "give love"s are the song's best scat (out of many) and the fade/transition is glorious.

Houston (Euler), Friday, 4 September 2009 10:24 (fifteen years ago)

This might be one of the only Queen tracks I like enough to own.

(I don't, but..)

Mark G, Friday, 4 September 2009 10:49 (fifteen years ago)

The best part is the totally black sleeve (apart from the artist and title info etc)

No 'photo', no image, no video, only the song. It stood purely on the quality of the track.

And wins.

Mark G, Friday, 4 September 2009 10:50 (fifteen years ago)

0:00-0:30 ("Mm ba ba de...")

I love the opening, plus it signals the oncoming glory of the rest of the song.

("'Cause love's such an old fashioned word...")

I think this is my favorite Queen song *and* my favorite Bowie song

iatee, Sunday, 6 September 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

Is it just me, or is this song structure really not all that revelatory? Unless you're really keen on distinguishing scat vocals, it just seems like verse-chorus-repeat-long coda to me. When I hear this song I think "amazing vocal riffing"/"awesome production"/"i am frozen in time," much less "can't believe they pulled that off with this song structure"

Point having been made, I went for ("Cause love's such and old fashioned word...")

een, Sunday, 6 September 2009 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

I suppose that was the point of the other thread, but that wasn't really my point with this one, obviously there's a good amount of repetition in this song and its structure is more pop than, say, "Bohemian Rhapsody." I still think it's an absolute marvel of songwriting, though.

some other dude (some dude), Sunday, 6 September 2009 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

OK, word

een, Sunday, 6 September 2009 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

interesting to hear what this song evolved out of and how different it is:

surprised there weren't more votes for "turned away from it all like a blind man" though.
