Because we need another Radiohead poll

"I Might Be Wrong"

OTM :-)

StanM, Friday, 4 September 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

this is a rare Radiohead poll i actually sort of like.

it's between High and Dry, No Surprises and Pyramid Song for me.

Ludo, Friday, 4 September 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

Just

definitely mayne (some dude), Friday, 4 September 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know if I should pick "Just" for getting me interested in Radiohead again after hating Pablo Honey, "Paranoid Android" for turning me into a raging fan, "Pyramid Song" for being so achingly gorgeous, or "There There" for being the song I come back to the most.

Actually I do know. "There There" FTW

cherokee flux (HI DERE), Friday, 4 September 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)

I've always been fond of the "My Iron Lung" singles. Quite revelatory at the time.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 4 September 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

"Paranoid Android". But only because "Exit Music" was never a single. That track remains the one best thing they ever did.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 4 September 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

Btw. "Optimistic" was never really a single, was it? I know it did get a lot of airplay, but I thought there was never a single from "Kid A" at all.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 4 September 2009 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

"this album has no single" was as much a marketing plan for that album as a single would have. and there were promo singles for "Optimistic" sent to radio.

definitely mayne (some dude), Friday, 4 September 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't know there were so many singles from In Rainbows - were these downloads or cds?

dog latin, Friday, 4 September 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

I'd have to trawl through Wikipedia to answer that and it's 4:30 on a Friday.

cherokee flux (HI DERE), Friday, 4 September 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

voted for There There - an incredible track in the middle of an only just slightly fumbled album.

dog latin, Friday, 4 September 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

Apparently "Bodysnatchers"/"House of Cards" was a double A-side promotional single.

(damn you for making me look up something when I should be sneaking out of work early)

cherokee flux (HI DERE), Friday, 4 September 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

Paranoid Android.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 4 September 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

at least you can go home safe in the knowledge that i now know the answer to that important question and that your selflessness has saved some other dude 3 minutes and two secondsworth of googling.

dog latin, Friday, 4 September 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

Am I really the first one to mention Let Down?

kornrulez6969, Friday, 4 September 2009 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

yes, thank you (xpost)

some other dude (some dude), Friday, 4 September 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

Not a big fan. Before 'Just' they were so whiny and miserable that I just felt embarrassed for them, and after 'Paranoid Android' they got so po-faced and important that they were just plain boring. Lovely run of singles between those two, though. Was tempted by 'My Iron Lung' as the outlier, and for its terrific guitar (recorded live with vocals dubbed later, I think it was), but eventually plumped for 'The Bends' - the big guitar burst was the nearest they ever got to joy.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 September 2009 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

There There v. Reckoner. There There by a nose.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 4 September 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

ismael otm

some other dude (some dude), Friday, 4 September 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

"Let Down" was a single???

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 4 September 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

Reckoner isn't boring. It's elegant. Self-important, maybe, but it's not like they're U2 or anything.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 4 September 2009 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, I was really hoping they'd done a tribute to Harry Partch.

Leaning towards "Pyramid Song" right now but "Paranoid Android" is pretty strong.

Sundar, Friday, 4 September 2009 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

"Let Down" was a single???

?!?!!!"! cosign ?"£?"3 ?"£??!"£

pretty much the only thing i would vote for over paranoid android.

wonder if i'll ever get round to listening to hail to the thief.

ledge, Friday, 4 September 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

I'm going to be the only one voting "pop is dead", aren't I?

Mark G, Friday, 4 September 2009 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

and thom yorke is going to come round and punch you in the face for it

ledge, Friday, 4 September 2009 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

Went for There There.

The Boxing Kangaroo, Friday, 4 September 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

xpost pff, he made the damn single, didn't he?

Anyroad, I got it at the time because that was the easiest way to get "Creep" - there's a live version on it.

I dug it out last weekend, and decided there's nothing wrong with it.

Mark G, Friday, 4 September 2009 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

why is this a poll

billstevejim, Saturday, 5 September 2009 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

it's easily the best radiohead poll of 09

king dom, come (k3vin k.), Saturday, 5 September 2009 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

Best Radihead poll of 09? There's only one way to find out

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 5 September 2009 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

"Let Down" won an OK Computer poll once and I was utterly mystified, had no idea people were especially fond of that song or why.

some other dude (some dude), Saturday, 5 September 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for 'Just,' but I also like 'Creep' a lot.

nicky lo-fi, Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

xp Because the guitars sound like snowflakes cascading from the night sky. Because of the 1% shot at redemption hiddein in the nihilistic-business-as-usual lyrics

ledge, Saturday, 5 September 2009 08:50 (sixteen years ago)

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 September 2009 08:52 (sixteen years ago)

There There v. Reckoner. There There by a nose.

Oh yes. "There There" is fucking majestic.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 5 September 2009 10:42 (sixteen years ago)

didn't know Brent DiCrescenzo was posting here as "ledge"

some other dude (some dude), Saturday, 5 September 2009 11:13 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for Lucky because it's the first Radiohead track I became properly obsessed over. Also Thom's voice is AMAZING in the opening bars and we don't hear anywhere near enough of his lower register in comparison to the high pitched mewl he uses over the last few records.

Tuncay Stryder (Matt DC), Saturday, 5 September 2009 11:20 (sixteen years ago)

'There There'. FWIW I think 'Knives Out' is one of the most depressing songs ever.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 5 September 2009 12:57 (sixteen years ago)

Pyramid song is what I'd like to listen to whilst dying. So that.

I was for awhile convinced that Blackstar is the greatest popsong of all time.

XLXR, Saturday, 5 September 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

There is no way that "Let Down" was ever a single. It is a better song than "Karma Police" and "No Surprises" though.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 5 September 2009 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

Hmmm apparently "Let Down" was released as a promo and also charted on the US Modern Rock chart. So not quite a single, but whatever, I already voted for it.

dr. johnson (askance johnson), Saturday, 5 September 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

sounds like a single to me

the fleet bon fox jumps iver the blank dog (k3vin k.), Saturday, 5 September 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

if anybody votes for high and dry i will shake my little fist

They are known for contracting the ugliest players, like Kuyt (country matters), Saturday, 5 September 2009 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

Personally, am torn between Dan's final 3 as well. Just is a bit uncrafted for my R-head tastes, although it is interesting to note that Stop Whispering is in my top 5

But yeah. Paranoid, Pyramid and There. Not easy.

They are known for contracting the ugliest players, like Kuyt (country matters), Saturday, 5 September 2009 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for "There There", both because it's great and because I encountered it as a single, seeing a video for it, rather than as an album track. The only other Radiohead songs I encountered that way were singles from The Bends which I saw as videos in a Best Buy on some jukebox kiosk they had set up. I remember that album being on megasale (maybe $7.99?), with big displays, for at least half a year in Best Buy, and thinking "haha the "Creep" guys; why isn't the new Porno for Pyros album on megasale too"? EMI evidently were willing to spend to ensure Radiohead weren't a one-hit wonder in the USA. They were intensely marketed in that era.

Houston (Euler), Sunday, 6 September 2009 07:19 (sixteen years ago)

I remember that album being on megasale (maybe $7.99?)

Yeah, I bought it in New York for that price, in a "rude not to" way.

Still not reeeealy taken with them. However, with "Kid A" I got it on day one, and That one was great. Others since have been "mmm, it's alright"...

Mark G, Sunday, 6 September 2009 08:21 (sixteen years ago)

Today it's Let Down...

ColinO, Sunday, 6 September 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

Wouldn't "Airbag" being the feature song on the "Airbag" EP constitute release as a single?

Pullman/Paxton Revolving Bills (Pillbox), Sunday, 6 September 2009 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

Not accoding to wikipedia!

cherokee flux (HI DERE), Sunday, 6 September 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

'lucky' for me. though i mean, jesus, what a selection of songs.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

The high level of quality starting circa "My Iron Lung" and continuing on pretty much through the rest of their career, at least as far as the songs I know are concerned (haven't heard the two newest ones yet) make me want to re-evaluate both Pablo Honey and In Rainbows (which I really wish I liked as an album).

cherokee flux (HI DERE), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

"Just" still trumps all

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

Fake plastic trees is the one for me. In my opinion it has the most sincere and affecting lyrics Yorke has ever penned and his voice sounds heartbreakingly beautiful on that one.
But I don't know.... besides Thom no other member of the band really gets to show their talents on that particular song (well maybe Johnny with the very simple but effective solo and guitar effects towards the end).
I'd go for anything off of Ok Computer for band interaction and showmanship.

Moka, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

I voted Knives Out because I always vote Pyramid Song and Amnesiac deserves much more credit. Knives Out is a fun song.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 01:25 (sixteen years ago)

Songs about cannibalism are not fun.

Moka, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

Dan - These Are My Twisted Words is a really nice piece of krauty chewiness. You'd like it.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

It begins like Faust covering Opeth, if that makes sense

kevision questler (country matters), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

sadly the wonder that is the opening minute is never quite recaptured, when I'd hoped they'd spin into an even darker, even more labyrinthine instrumental vortex

kevision questler (country matters), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i hoped the same thing, about the dark labyrinthine vortex.

radio k3ller (some dude), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

like, that *awesome* descending jangle needs to be built upon, not retreated from, but what do i know

kevision questler (country matters), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

There There
Pyramid Song
Paranoid Android
Bodysnatchers
Optimistic

aarrissi-a-roni, Sunday, 13 September 2009 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, "Pyramid Song" for me.

Lostandfound, Monday, 14 September 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

"Karma Police" is emerging as a challenger to the Paranoid - Pyramid - There axis...it FEELS like an event song

alien vs the smiths (country matters), Monday, 14 September 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

will probably flip a coin to vote however...o god and 2+2=5 is so good as well...

alien vs the smiths (country matters), Monday, 14 September 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

I thought if anyone would be on my side in thinking "Karma Police" just happened to be a single because it was the blandest simplest song on the album it'd be LJ

Alex, Lord Autogoon (some dude), Monday, 14 September 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

haha! well it's not that COMPLICATED but it is VERY single-ish, it is a kinda neat summary of the OKC-era Radiohead ethos, if you get my meaning, I mean it is a worse song than PA, Airbag, Climbing Up The Walls and maybe a coupla others but it is a Big Event Song...hmm

alien vs the smiths (country matters), Monday, 14 September 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

how is "Karma Police" a summary of anything

so says i tranny ben franklin (HI DERE), Monday, 14 September 2009 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

I do like the song but how does it relate to anything else on OK Computer other than being in proximity to the other songs?

so says i tranny ben franklin (HI DERE), Monday, 14 September 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

it is a simplified reading of the technological angst present throughout! done as a piano ballad! in 2 easy movements! with a very obvious climax!

alien vs the smiths (country matters), Monday, 14 September 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

anyway fuck it I'm voting for Paranoid Android

alien vs the smiths (country matters), Monday, 14 September 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

Go for it, "Pop"

Mark G, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

Creep, by a mile.

xhuxk, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

OK, we have a little time here. Which one is going to win by a mile then?

Android, I reckons.

Actually, no.

"Just" by a goddam mile.

Oh god, it's Shirly Bassey singing "Somethingggg", ...

Mark G, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

There will be a strong showing by "There There".

If there's any justice, the top 4 will be some configuration of "There There", "Just", "Paranoid Android" and "Pyramid Song".

so says i tranny ben franklin (HI DERE), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

except without Just and with Stop Whispering

alien vs the smiths (country matters), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

dreamz

alien vs the smiths (country matters), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

holy shit this Harry Patch thing is fucking unbelievable

in terms of "I cannot believe anyone would seriously choose to release this unholy piece of crap under their respected band's name"

so says i tranny ben franklin (HI DERE), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

("Twisted Words" is decent enough, though)

so says i tranny ben franklin (HI DERE), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

So not a singles band. Just makes me realise how few of my fave Radiohead songs were actually singles. I mean, what band on earth would not release Idioteque as a single. Are you sure that wasn't a single? I remember it getting heavy play in indie clubs. And Airbag! Airbag was a single because I *had* it. Oh wait, it was an e.p. Doesn't that count? Ach.

girls just wanna have mixtapes (Masonic Boom), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

if Airbag was in this poll, I would probably vote for it, with the EP in mind, and also because it is kickass, even though I voted 2+2=5 ahead of it on the opening tracks poll o_O

alien vs the smiths (country matters), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 14 September 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Heyyy, "Pop is Dead" beat 2+2=5 *and* Nude

R&R!

Mark G, Monday, 14 September 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

Wow i had no idea "There There" was so popular.

myndbloom, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 04:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah really
