ooh. twelve-inch mixes make it a little more complicated.

I used to think the girls were singing "onomatopoeia" during the middle 8 of "Annie"

Mark G, Monday, 7 September 2009 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

"No Fish Today" rolls around my head every other week or so, but "Annie I'm Not Your Daddy" is one of the great album openers (and helluva karaoke number too).

me too actually!

thomp, Monday, 7 September 2009 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

i think they are tho

history mayne, Monday, 7 September 2009 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

gotta be boring and go with "stool pigeon"

this album vs. fresh fruit in foreign places btw? what say the collected enthusiasts

Man Is Nairf! (J0hn D.), Monday, 7 September 2009 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

"i'm corrupt" was always my favorite

psychgawsple, Monday, 7 September 2009 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure they're singing "onomatopoeia".

It's either "I'm a Wonderful Thing" or "Stool Pigeon". At the time it was deffo "Stool Pigeon" but I am older and more sophistrycated now obv.

i've never got into the other records. voted for 'wonderful thing' 12'' mix myself but now wondering which i genuinely prefer

thomp, Monday, 7 September 2009 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

dunno if it should be Stool Pigeon or Stool Pigeon 12". I guess the bonus tracks SHOULDN'T count though.

Although this is a tremendous and brave album in so many ways, 'Stool Pigeon' is one of the landmark achievements in human expression. There's a youtube of them performing it on the Merv Griffin show that will clear the malaise from your spirit with uncanny force. WARNING: watch with care or you will injure your thorax.

re: onomatopoeia

The lyric sheet (Smash Hits, prob) had it as "Oh no, Oh no, I don't wanna be a..."

Here's a few "theories"

(Original lyric, yeah right! "She had a ball or two" is the correct lyric, for example)

christmas on riverside drive just cuz it's one of my all-time faves

steener HOOStinov (s1ocki), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

wait, they're NOT singing onomatopoeia??

mountain G.O.A.T. (s1ocki), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

lyric sheet is RONG, it has to be onomatopoeia

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

listening again, i can hear "i don't wanna be a" but they are clearly saying "ah-na" not "oh no"

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

I hear onomatopoeia too.

My life is butthurt so badly (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

i'm corrupt is a killer

ojo, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

"Annie I'm Not Your Daddy" (and I refuse to vote for bonus tracks that are repeats of the album tracks - plus that track was in a great extended version on the album already)

twelve years pass...

I came on here to do a poll on this! I'll have to run one on one of the later albums like "Doppelganger", "In Praise of Older Women... and Other Crimes", or "Private Waters in the Great Divide", except for the fact that no bugger would respond, so there'd be no point!

KC&TC's live concerts on youtube are worth checking out, there's lots on Youtube....so many costume changes (and such great costumes, they got a tailor to make them all specially), and much clowning around from Andy "Coati Mundi" Hernandez. KC & AH interviews are extremely entertaining too, and surprisingly insightful.

It's a shame AH is no longer performing with KC. Not sure what happened there.

Anyway, I revisit this album often, and the song I *would've* voted for is "No Fish Today". It's the closest the band got to social commentary.

For a pop party band the lyrics can be quite brutal! KC's fisherman on NFT seems so indifferent to the starving woman's plight he might as well be a Tory MP, and in A,INYD the lines

"See if I was in your blood
Then you wouldn't be so ugly"

are a real punch in the gut!

Like everyone else I assumed it was onomatopoeia the Coconuts were singing - guessing it's "i don't wanna be a" to which the audience is supposed to insert for themselves in their minds "bastard"? Or what else does it mean? I dunno.
